Amtraks NEC. August 6, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-03-15 | This location is approximately 1-2 miles north of Princeton Jct. in Plainsboro, NJ, sandwiched between Schalks Crossing Rd and the Scudders Mill Rd overpasses.
CP Rail. Central Bridge, NY. July 24, 31, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-03-14 | This location is approximately one mile (RR North) of Central Bridge, NY, on the former D&H, This is where the tracks ascend out of the Schoharie Valley. I visited this location two consecutive Sundays. The first Sunday, July 24, was dead. After the first early morning Southbound, I waited into the afternoon with no results. It was a great time to work on a suntan during those long boring hours. I think I left around 2:00 pm. The next Sunday, July 31, was what I considered a busy morning on the former D&H north of Binghamton. Three trains (oh boy) within six hours was busy.
Couple of Conrail Trains, MP 196. July 17, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-03-07 | After shooting the CP (D&H) at Howes Cave, NY to the south (youtu.be/16C5cwJ6dc8), I headed up to milepost 196 on Conrail's Chicago line east of Palatine Bridge and caught two westbound trains.
Howes Cave, NY. July 17, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-02-20 | Three CP trains on the old D&H just east of Howes Cave, NY. This location is approximately 2,500 ft east (north by timetable) of the Sagendorf road crossing at southbound signal 38.2. Traffic volume at this time was low, and many hours of waiting was the norm. A magazine and a sheet to lie on was a must. This was an action packed morning for the CP's D&H. After the last train was shot, I headed up to Conrail's Chicago line along the Mohawk... another video.
Conrails Chicago Line. Palatine Bridge, NY. July 2, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-02-18 | A busy day on Conrail's Chicago line just east of Palatine Bridge, NY. I arrived at 6:30 AM and left around 2:00 pm. I missed (on video) a meet with the eastbound Lake Shore LTD and a westbound Conrail freight. It was a tough spot for train detection, with no real audible warning other than the singing welded rails. The last two trains were shot farther west.
Selkirk Yard at Night. May 29-30, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-01-26 | Perhaps die-hard Conrail fans will find this video of interest. I debated with myself whether to post this video as it is very dark. Selkirk Yard at night on the night of May 29, 1994. Earlier in the day I shot this video, youtu.be/eFlJY9aBAZU, and must have headed up to Selkirk that night, as I have no memory of this outside the video. I do remember shooting Kodachrome 64 time exposures that night which came out rather nice.

It was this visit to this model railroad that forever changed my view on model railroads. In my mind they became something in which to recreate the past, resurrect a fallen flag railroad, ...a time machine.Please forgive the amateurish video, it's aggravating at times.The video camera couldn't focus most of the time it seems.

Southern Tier Semaphore 2492. Barton, NY. June 11, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-01-12 | Ex Erie semaphore signal 2492, which was located just west of Barton, NY, on Conrail's Southern Tier line. This was an eastbound signal at milepost 249 on track 2. We see two CP trains pass by in both directions.
Southern Tier Semaphores, 2512-2511. June 4, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2020-01-03 | Two ex Erie semaphores which were located between Waverly, NY, and Barton, NY, on Conrail's Southern Tier Line, at milepost 251, June 4, 1994. According to Google maps, this location is in Waverly, NY. I parked near Old Barton Rd and hiked west to the location. Semaphore 2512 was an eastbound signal located on track 2. Approximately 1,000 feet to the west, stood semaphore 2551, a westbound signal on track 1. Conrail, CP, and NYS&W trains pass by. Conrail was in the process of upgrading the line.

August 06, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2019-09-03 | This is more or less a test of an AVI capture, using; VirtualDub/lagarith lossless codec/deinterlaced with Yadif /resized to 960 x 720 with a frame rate of 59.94. I will have to check my notes, as my memory is foggy. I think this is south of Monmouth Junction. Definitely a rural locale.
NS Marion Ohio. September 6, 1995. 1990s Railfan 2019-08-31 | A southbound NS freight crosses the Conrail diamonds at Marion. AC tower is still in it's original location. Thankfully it was preserved and relocated to the south side of the Conrail right of way next to the station. I stopped here for a moment during a drive from KC to NY. In hindsight, I should have spent a day here.

SP on BN Rails. Bushnell, IL. September 28, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2019-08-30 | Sometime around late 1989, Southern Pacific acquired trackage rights on the BN from Kansas City to Chicago. This gave them access to the Chicago market for the first time. As a student at WIU from 1988-1992 in Macomb, I witnessed the steady increase in SP traffic over the Brookfield Sub. By 1992, it seemed SP ran more trains than the BN over this line. This is 1994, and the SP has only two years of life left before the UP merger.

Conrail GP40 #3269 pulls the string of newness by an ancient Erie semaphore (2452 track 2) on the southern tier line at Smithboro, NY. February 25, 1995 @ 2:29 pm.
NYS&W over the O&W. FEBRUARY 18, 1995. 1990s Railfan 2019-08-18 | A westbound NYS&W manifest soars over the old O&W bridge at Campbell Hall, NY on February 18, 1995. The train is minutes off the Hudson Secondary, up from New Jersey. This was a time when catching a NYS&W unit in the lead or in the consist was difficult. Foreign power was the norm, as you will see in upcoming videos.

UP OKT Line Chase. AUGUST 14, 1997. 1990s Railfan 2019-08-11 | "Anything Goes August" continues as we jump through the years picking random snippets here and there. A more obscure line is Union Pacific's OKT Subdivison running north-south through the heart of Oklahoma. This was the former Rock Island, and later leased to the MKT by the state of OK. Here we chase a very funky lash up with a grain train south out of Enid OK.
Conrail E8s. Marion Branch, Indiana. MP 62. June 24, 1998. 1990s Railfan 2019-08-04 | I again jump out of chronological order, to present Conrail executive E8s, 4021& 4020, heading south down Conrail's Marion Branch. This location is just south of Wabash, IN. I had no idea this train was running, a story I'll tell in a future video. This was during a multiple-day trip to photograph Conrail in it's last full year. The Marion Branch was a former NYC line, that later (under PC), had PRR signals installed during the line's upgrade in 1973-74.
C-5 Galaxy Takeoff. SWF Tower. Newburgh, NY. June 6, 1993. 1990s Railfan 2019-08-03 | Yeah, it's not a train, but will be one of only two aviation videos on this channel. A giant Lockheed C-5 taxis and takes off from Stewart Airport in Newburgh, NY (SWF). Thanks to controller Tom Matthews for the invite...I should've shot more video.
NJ Transit Derailment. Arden, NY. June 29, 1994. 1990s Railfan 2019-07-28 | (Sorry, had to reupload this vid to correct choppy and sporadic playback) I don't know anything about this derailment on the Port Jervis line. I don't think it made the press, and I can't find anything about it. Apparently, GP40FH-2 4144 hit the dirt at Arden NY. Not sure if it was the night before or that morning.
