PIV is a method to derive velocities from fluids. It uses cross-correlations between two images to estimate a displacement. And these cross-correlations are what you see in the animation. Each correlation has a small yellow peak. The distance from the centre of the matrix to this peak actually tells you the speed of your fluid at a specific point! The small black circle is from the peak finding algorithm - it locates the peak with sub-pixel accuracy. This is how a PIV software calculates all the vectors.
The matrices were calculated with PIVlab in MATLAB. They were also rendered to a movie file in MATLAB.

DroneClash - RobotWars in the sky! February 13, 2018, The Netherlands
Eight international teams have registered for DroneClash! During this competition the teams use their highly sophisticated drone(s) to take down as many other drones as possible, RobotWars in the sky as it were. Teams need to bring at least two drones per battle, but they can use more if they want to. They also need to avoid a number of anti-drone interventions. The teams will battle on 13 February in a former airbase hangar in the Netherlands. Besides fun and a truck load (filled to the top) of honor, the teams battle for €50.000 prize money.

.FPV racing airplane: CAD design, 3D milling & maiden flight!William Thielicke2017-11-08 | I wanted to create a small FPV racing aircraft that has a good performance on small racing tracks with FAI gates. So I created this bimotor airplane. The yaw control makes it very agile. I am using a flight controller with iNAV firmware to stabilize all axes. I like the results, and I am looking forward to fly it on race tracks with a lot of gates.

Today there was the opportunity. They weigh around 130g, 260g, respectively 470g. I have to say that one of the motors of the 4" racer was damaged during a crash earlier this week. This motor becomes really hot (and the others don't). This cost a lot of performance. Actually the speed of the 4" is almost identical to the 5". The track was almost a "full throttle only" track, so I am really surprised that the difference is pretty small.Recoil 125mm 125g brushless quad indoor trackWilliam Thielicke2017-03-18 | Great fun in a small gym.Superhydrophobic surfaces / lotus effect by W.Th.William Thielicke2017-02-07 | http://william.thielicke.org/LotusEffektRECOIL mini quad, first time on the racetrackWilliam Thielicke2017-02-04 | This little machine is still great fun...! I am happy to see that the derbe evo and my flightcontroller can compete with the best international pilots. Although I had to mount a GoPro session to the copter which does almost eliminate any aerodynamic advantage...
I was trying to fly safe and slow in the quarterfinals but then I crashed with another copter in the second lap already. I don't think that I could have avoided this, probably the other pilot did also not see me, as we crashed sideways. But watch it yourself and let me know what you think!

The HQprops have a higher top speed, and they are better on long tracks without tight turns. I was however unsure if they can compete with the C-props on short and tight tracks where you can hardly go to full throttle. Therefore I made this quick test today.
Both propellers perform almost identically on tight tracks, the c-props are just a little bit better.
I also tested some 5x4 triblades, but they are just loud crap and can't compete at all with the 2-bladed props that I tested today. I might however test some other triblades in the future.INTERCON 2016 - Dr. William ThielickeWilliam Thielicke2016-03-19 | Congreso INTERCON 2016, Piura, Congreso Internacional de Ingeniería Eléctrica, Electrónica y ComputaciónShrediquette derbe evo - first flightWilliam Thielicke2016-02-28 | This is a dirty video of the first flight. First flight in march 2016.FPV camera tilt compensation, explained by the inventorWilliam Thielicke2016-01-11 | ...I recently had a simple idea on how to improve the handling of racing multirotors, and just implemented this feature in my flight controller.
Almost every 'serious' FPV racer is tilting the FPV camera up in order to have a better image during fast flight. Angles between 10 and 35 degrees seem to be common. E.g. I am using 25 degrees. But tilting the camera with respect to the multirotors horizontal plane has a side effect on the controls (maybe you never thought about it, because you are so used to flying with this side effect).
'FPV camera tilt compensation' eliminates this effect, and I think it enhances the flight performance of your racing multirotor.
In Betaflight, this parameter is called Fpv_mix_degrees or roll_yaw_cam_mix_degrees
Please note that this was my first flight with a large camera (GoPro) attached to a racing copter. I was a bit surprised by the negative impact of the extra weight & drag, and I was not really feeling confident yet. I do not really understand why people deliberately choose to fly competitions with action cameras mounted on their machines... See details on shrediquette.blogspot.comFPV racing: Yaw turns vs. pitch turns: How do you do it?William Thielicke2015-08-02 | There seem to be two different strategies for turning in FPV racing. I usually do the "pitch turning", but today I also tried the "yaw turning" which is something that other pilots seem to do. My theory is the following:
People that learnt how to fly with a multirotor in leveling mode will use "yaw turning", because that feels more familiar to them - even if they now fly in acro mode.
People that learnt how to fly with a plane, a helicopter or a multirotor in rate mode will use "pitch turning", because that feels more natural to them.
