However, when Canadian Pacific Kansas City announced they would operate their famed steam locomotive, Canadian Pacific H1b 4-6-4 Hudson #2816 from their home base of Calgary, Alberta, to Mexico City, Mexico, we knew we had to set out to see the "Empress" in action. We set out for the Louisiana/Arkansas/Texas tri-state area to photograph and document the locomotive as she made her way through the deep South. Over the course of three days, we had a fantastic time with our friends and other railfans capturing #2816 and its train as many times as possible with the blistering heat and brutal humidity. Even just a 1% grade, meaning the track rises one foot for every 100 feet of distance, can still pose a challenge to any locomotive and crew. In most cases, the engineer has to open up the throttle more than usual and that can make quite a show. I've encountered many locomotives in my days of photographing them, most of which put on quite a show. So please enjoy this compilation I put together of my favorite encounters of locomotives and crew showing off what they can do.

I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Cumbres & Toltec #488 - Breaking in the SeasonArkansas Locomotive Works2024-05-27 | Memorial Day weekend is usually when the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad opens to the public and operates from then until October running daily except Mondays. However, there are some exceptions. The railroad needs to move equipment from one side to the other to be properly prepared for the onslaught of people wishing to ride this beautiful railroad as all of the serviceable passenger cars are kept in Antonito, Colorado for the winter for repairs and storage. Photographers and other guests were invited by the railroad and their PR team to join the passenger car move from Antonito to Chama, NM with a few stops for runbys on the way. At 9:00 sharp we set out and it was off to Chama. It was a windy and chilly day but regardless a lot of fun to finally experience this ride for myself (yes this is my first time riding on the railroad). It was an honor to be a part of this and I thank the railroad for inviting me out to join along for the ride. Enjoy the video!

I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Santa Fe #2926 - Out and About AgainArkansas Locomotive Works2024-05-18 | On May 4th, 2024, New Mexico Heritage Rail once again brought out their massive steam locomotive, former Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe #2926, for another publicity stunt running from their restoration site on 8th Street in Albuquerque, NM up to the Tractor Brewery on 4th Street, offering cab tours and souvenirs to any visitors. After about 4 hours the big Northern slowly moved back to its restoration site. This is the first of several outings the society plans to do other events and outings with the behemoth of a locomotive promoting their cause and hopefully gaining state government support for funding to cover costs for actual mainline trips.

Originally as the homes and religious sites for Native American tribes, and currently one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United States. Ever since it was officially made a National Park in 1919, the Grand Canyon has attracted millions yearly ever since. There have been many ways to get to the canyon, horseback, walking, and more recently, by road. However, there has been one mode of transportation that has been celebrated for over 120 years now, the railroad. When the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe completed a branch line from Williams, AZ to the South Rim of the Canyon in 1901, it was almost exclusively for passenger service for tourists wishing to see the canyon. Nowadays, since 1989, the Grand Canyon Railway has been hauling passengers to and from the canyon year-round, mostly with MLW FPA4s or EMD F40PHs being used as motive power. However, the railroad also operates their steam locomotive on select Saturdays during the peak season. Primarily using former Chicago Burlington & Quincy O1a 2-8-2 Mikado #4960 as motive power for their steam excursions. We visited the railroad in early March of 2024 to document the first run of steam in the 2024 season. It was cold and windy most of the time but nevertheless, we had a fantastic time with our friends and with #4960 putting on a spectacular show of power and steam. Essentially this is almost the same as a regular Cumbres & Toltec video, instead, it is all audio, with the only visuals giving the viewer an idea of what location the current audio is being played at. This document the K-36 locomotives of the Cumbres & Toltec operating from Chama, New Mexico up the grueling 4% grade to Cumbres Pass, Colorado. This is most likely the beginning of other videos in this style, primarily of the D&RGW narrow gauge but some others as well. This took inspiration from Semaphore Records' "Ghost Whistles at Cass".

I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Sky Railway - Flying High with a DragonArkansas Locomotive Works2023-11-30 | Since 2021, the Sky Railway of Santa Fe, New Mexico has been slowly, but surely, growing in popularity as a tourist destination for the Santa Fe area. Originally known as the Santa Fe Southern, and it still bears the SFS reporting marks, this tiny railroad has been treating thousands to a classic train ride with a small twist. George R.R. Martin, the original author of the popular television show, Game of Thrones, purchased the railroad after it had previously gone out of business and had a complete and total revision of the railroad. The motive power and rolling stock were repainted with an unconventional dragon-themed paint scheme for a different aesthetic to attract more tourists. Most railfans aren't the biggest fan of it, however, the tourists love it, and it's been one of Santa Fe's more popular attractions in recent years. I spent a cloudy September day on the railroad getting as many shots as I could since it was my first time chasing. Had a great time with the friendly crew and hope to come back soon!

On both days of the charter, former White Pass & Yukon DL-535E #107 and K-37 #493 were in charge of the train. Since this was the only train to Silverton those days, the train was 15 cars long and most of the time completely booked, making it a slight challenge for one steam locomotive to operate this train. While it's unconventional, it was still pretty cool seeing an old ALCo working with an even older steam locomotive to get where they needed to go to.

I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge - Centennial Along the AnimasArkansas Locomotive Works2023-11-10 | On October 2nd, 1923, newly built 140 class locomotive #473 of the Denver & Rio Grande made its first run out of Salida to Sargents, Colorado, marking the first time this class of locomotives ever operated. Later reclassified as K-28 locomotives when the Denver & Rio Grande was reorganized as the Denver & Rio Grande Western. The K-28s served the railroad with pride for about 20 years until 7 of the class were shipped off to Alaska to help with the war effort and never returned to home rails. The survivors, #473, #476, and #478, continued service mainly on the Silverton Branch. Even when the D&RGW sold the Silverton Branch and its equipment to Charles Bradshaw to create the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, the legacy was still carried on for the K-28s as there has always been at least one operating every season the railroad operates. Fast-forward to 2023 and the locomotives are now celebrating their highly anticipated Centennial of being constructed. To commemorate this once-in-a-lifetime occasion, the Durango & Silverton announced a series of special photo charters specifically with K-28s being the centerpiece of the charters. The charter in this video was the third and final charter of the year, making it the most anticipated. The plan was to have locomotives #473 and #476 haul a mixed freight/passenger train with one of the locomotives acting as a mid-train helper. This was the first time since 1958 that a train had been operated like this on the Silverton Branch, making this a very rare and highly anticipated occasion for everyone attending the charter. The beautiful autumn colors mixed very well with the hard-working steam locomotives. The crews and organizers did a spectacular job giving what we photographers wanted for this amazing occasion. (I apologize for the last shots in Durango being out of focus, my camera lens was damaged, and didn't know at the time)Cumbres & Toltec - Doubleheading Under the EclipseArkansas Locomotive Works2023-10-22 | Autumn is the most popular time of the year for tourists to visit the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. People from all over the world flock to the railroad to view some of the most beautiful autumn scenery in the world. October 14th, 2023, however, was a slightly different day. Earlier in the year, scientists announced an annular eclipse would pass over the Southwestern United States, and Chama, New Mexico, headquarters for the Cumbres & Toltec, would be in around the 90% area of the eclipse. People flocked to the railroad to see the eclipse from the train, with about 400 people purchasing tickets, making it the busiest day of the railroad for the 2023 season. This also meant two extra passenger coaches to accommodate the more than usual passenger numbers. With two added coaches, one standard Class K-36 2-8-2 Mikado could not withstand the weight due to the 4% out of Chama going uphill to Cumbres Pass. While K-36 #484 was good to go, it needed help. The only other locomotive serviceable in Chama was none other than D&RGW class C-18 2-8-0 Consolidation, #315. Originally of Florence & Cripple Creek heritage, #315 had recently performed a ferry move from Antonito to Chama for winter storage. #315 was left hot just in case, and now it was her time to shine. Teaming up with #484, the duo worked hard up the grueling 4% grade toward Cumbres Pass successfully without any incidents. At Cumbres, #315 cut off the consist, turned around on the wye, and went back to Chama, while #484 continued hauling the consist to Antonito on its own, was the rest of the journey was downhill. This was without a doubt the highlight of our trip to Cumbres & Toltec, as we've never seen the #315 battle up the 4%, so it was very exciting. Originally built with the intention of mining silver in the area, turned into an oil boom, and later one of the most celebrated tourist railroads in the United States. The fall season is the most popular among tourists to visit the beloved Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. The foliage is among some of the most beautiful in the world, stretching for over 64 miles along the right-of-way between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado. This is our first of four videos coming soon of the D&RGW operating in the fall. We spent three days on the railroad chasing trains going up Cumbres Pass and as far as Los Pinos. It was a fantastic time documenting the native locomotives working hard up the hill. Mainly of K-36 #484, sporting a DT&I 5 Chime. We also got to see K-36 #488, with a Nathan 5 Chime, and K-27 #463 with a D&RGW Hooter, hustling their trains to the desired destination. The group was granted permission to perform a publicity run with their steam locomotive, former Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe 4-8-4 #2926, to the Albuquerque Railyards complex for two days of public display for the people of Albuquerque and beyond to view the massive locomotive and other pieces of equipment provided by BNSF and Amtrak. With at least thousands visiting the locomotive, really brings a very good message that the people want to see this thing in action. The main highlight without a doubt was the ferry moves #2926 performed to and from the Railyards Complex. #2926 had to travel about two and a half miles each way with hundreds of railfans and civilians alike trying to catch their glimpse of the massive 4-8-4. This marked the first time since 1953 that 2926 had operated on a mainline railroad. While it wasn't very long, it's just one step closer to mainline trips with this beast of an engine. We wish our best to the folks taking care of #2926.

Locomotive #473 was put in charge of these trains for the year and put on a spectacular show for the railfans chasing her up the hill. With the locomotive working hard, the beautiful golden hour, and the very enthusiastic passengers on board, this was probably the most fun I've had on a chase on the D&S. Originally classified as class 140s for the Denver & Rio Grande, and later as K-28 locomotives for the reorganized Denver & Rio Grande Western. Immediately upon delivery, these locomotives were put to work on the D&RGW. Flash-forward to today, three are still around, two operational, and still working hard on home rails for happy passengers of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. In 2023, these beautiful locomotives celebrate their 100th Anniversary of being built. To celebrate this momentous occasion, the D&S organized special events involving K-28s. The first one occurred in February with #476 on a what-if charter if the Silverton Train operated in the winter in the early 1970s, which you can view coverage of here youtu.be/nT1Q8rhkqto?si=lR2f8C9FsmOmzsLy . The second, which is covered in this video, was with #473 pulling a mixed train to Silverton and back with some photo-runbys offered for paying passengers. I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad - Dual Steam to SilvertonArkansas Locomotive Works2023-08-30 | Since 2020, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has been operating steam-powered trains to Silverton at a very limited margarin due to the COVID-19 pandemic and fire concerns due to the devastating 416 wildfire in mid-summer 2018. Since then, only one steam-powered train had operated to Silverton on a regular schedule, as one of the steam-powered trains would be replaced with former White Pass & Yukon diesel locomotives. This all changed before the start of the Summer 2023 season. While initially, the railroad would continue that idea of running one steam-powered train to Silverton and one powered by diesel, the railroad had announced that not two, but three trains would be operating to Silverton during the late season. The second steam-powered train was added on August 14th, replacing the diesel motive power. The third steam-powered train will be added on September 1st and will continue until October 14th. During the weekend of August 26th-27th, 2023, we found ourselves out on the Durango & Silverton once again to film this fantastic operation. Tourists and railfans alike flock to the railroad yearly, with approximately 300,000 people annually. With Lancaster County already being a hotspot for tourists, it's only natural for so many people to visit the railroad. We took the time to document the railroad's regularly scheduled operating hourly train from East Strasburg Station to Leman Place Junction, and back, on a beautiful July day. Locomotive #89 was in charge of trains that day. Originally of Grand Trunk and Canadian National heritage, the husky E10a Mogul worked gallantly as happy passengers enjoyed their ride through the Amish countryside. We had a fantastic time with friends and crew members while riding this historic railroad. We hope to come back for any special events the railroad has to offer.

Originally built for Silver mining operations, the railroad evolved over the years into one of the most beloved tourist railroads in the world. While the rest of the D&RGW narrow gauge was abandoned and torn up in the 1960s and 70s, excluding what is now the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, the Silverton Branch was booming with activity. Many Hollywood movies had been filmed on the Silverton Branch and that boosted its popularity with tourists visiting from around the world, despite the D&RGW's constant efforts to abandon it. Finally, in 1981, Charles Bradshaw purchased the branch line and as many locomotives as possible, rebranding the line as the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, and has been operating ever since. We visited the railroad twice during the 2023 summer season, with a mission to get as many shots, and the best shots possible of the double-headed powered steam trains to Silverton. With either K-28s #473, sporting a D&RGW 3 Chime, and #476, sporting a Southern Pacific 6 Chime, heading the train together or one of the K-28s with K-36 #482, sporting a Crosby 3 Chime, or K-37 #493, sporting a Texas & Pacific replica 3 Chime. The crews and locomotives put on a fantastic show making their way through the beautiful scenery of La Plata and San Juan counties. We would like to thank our friends @PennsyPro and @RailFoxMedia for visiting the railroad with us this year, along with members from @AmericanSteamRailroad who were also visiting the railroad. Without a doubt, we would like to thank all of the railroad employees who work hard every day to keep this amazing and historic railroad alive and well for generations to come. Since 1981, the Durango & Silverton has been hauling happy passengers from the prominent town of Durango, Colorado to the former mining hub at Silverton, Colorado. However, not all the trains go the entire 45 miles. The Cascade Canyon Express runs about halfway to Silverton to, you guessed it, Cascade Canyon. With beautiful scenery along the way, this is truly a must-do for anyone willing to enjoy the splendor of the San Juan Mountains. We spent four days on separate occasions at the Durango & Silverton, mainly focusing on the trains to Silverton, we still found some time to document the trains to Cascade, with either K-36 #482, sporting a Crosby 3 Chime, or K-37 #493, sporting a replica Texas & Pacific 3 chime, working hard up the steep grades of the Silverton Branch.

High-speed roller coasters, live music, fantastic dining, and shopping. However, there is one attraction at the park that stands out the most to me, the Dollywood Express, the original attraction that was here before the name Dollywood existed. With veterans of the White Pass & Yukon route as motive power as the primary motive power for this small railroad, both locomotives #192 and #70 are up to the task of pulling loaded trains uphill with grades up to 6%. We were thrilled to see locomotive #70 in action during our brief visit to the park, and we hope you enjoy this short production on the Dollywood Express.

With 64 miles of beautiful scenery and a roster with several active steam locomotives, the C&TS is guaranteed to satisfy anyone from the typical tourist to the most dedicated railfans. We spent three days in early June capturing some of the first trains to operate in the Summer season as best as we could. With locomotives #488 and #484 being the primary motive power for this month, the locomotives and engineers got to show of their skills and power working up the steep grade of Cumbres Pass which has a maximum gradient of 4%. We would like to thank Nick Martin of @PennsyPro and his family for coming out to ride and chase the train with us, along with members of @AmericanSteamRailroad who also came out to enjoy this beautiful railroad. Of course many thanks to the hard-working employees and volunteers of the Cumbres & Toltec and the Friends of the Cumbres & Toltec for helping keep this railroad going and keeping history alive along the Denver & Rio Grande Western's 4th Division. I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Denver & Rio Grande Western #315 - Highball to OsierArkansas Locomotive Works2023-05-29 | Memorial Day weekend is always a busy one every year for the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad. This past weekend marked the opening weekend for the railroad for public passenger trains until mid-October. The railroad had two trains operating on both days of Memorial Day weekend. One departing Chama and running to Cumbres and return, and another departing Antonito running to Osier and return. We made our way up to the San Luis Valley to document the trains departing Antonito, as there was special motive power to be used for these trains. On the first day, D&RGW C-18 #315 was in charge of the train to Osier and back, and on the second, D&RG T-12 #168 would take command. Unfortunately, we were not able to document #168, more on that later. #315 was steamed up the previous day and was prepared to make her first public appearance in about two years, as crews recently made the finishing touches to its 1,472-day FRA-mandated rebuild. #315 departed on time and the chase was on. My vehicle had a rough time but managed to get through the very tough roads that followed the railroad. Once we captured the #315 departing Sublette, NM, I noticed my vehicle was leaking motor oil and had at one point struck an object on the road which caused a tear in the oil pan. We were lucky to make it back to Antonito to have things figured out and it's currently being worked on. Despite this, we still had a fantastic time chasing this beautiful locomotive on this amazing railroad and we hope to come back soon. Very special thanks to the railroad crew for helping me out in my hour of need.

Months of planning were put into moving their newly restored and operational steam locomotive, Santa Fe #2926, into the public eye. After performing successful test runs on their restoration grounds, which we were a witness to the first one, the date was set as May 6th, 2023. Hundreds and possibly thousands of Albuquerquians came out to witness this historic occasion. While it was only about a half-mile move down to the Tractor Brewery Company on 4th Street, this is just another step closer to seeing this massive locomotive speeding down the mainline, which is potentially not too far down the line. Regardless it was an honor to be able to witness this momentous occasion and I wish the best of luck to everyone down at the NMSL&RHS to keep this living history alive.

During the Winter season, the railroad offers the Cascade Canyon Express, running on select dates from Durango to Cascade. While we were attending the photographer's special, the Cascade train still had to get to its destination. During both days the train was powered by K-36 #481, a 1925 graduate of Baldwin. On the first day, our photo special train was in the siding at Tacoma Power Plant to let #481 pass by and she put on a spectacular show. On the second day, our train was in the siding at Rockwood to let the same happen. Although #481 didn't put on as much of a show due to the 5 mph speed restriction, it was still amazing to see both locomotives side by side.

The majority of this content is payware or vaporware and I cannot distribute to anyone.Trainz - Steam for the Penn CentralArkansas Locomotive Works2023-03-05 | We all have our crazy ideas. Some could too outlandish for an actual concept. However, with the magic of simulators, some could actually happen. I've personally made some content that's different, to say the least. Strasburg Railroad #425, Pennsylvania Railroad M Class #475, and others. The one you see in this video would be Penn Central K4 #1339. While browsing Discord, I came across a screenshot shared by user Kiyo and I was highly intrigued. They made the original design for this concept of a former Pennsylvania Railroad K4 operating on the ill-fated Penn Central on a fictional steam program. I was very interested in doing my own rendition and got to work. I added a circular numberplate and recolored the numbers, de-Pennsying if you would. The tender was simple at first, adding Penn Central lettering and replacing the small PRR on the rear of the tender with a Penn Central logo. However, after some suggestions from other Discord users, I made more modifications. One user suggested adding a bell to make it a little more outlandish. Another user, Kremestation, suggested adding an electric air horn that he modeled based on what Southern Pacific Cab-Forwards had. What you see here is the final product. It's not my most ambitious project but I'm still really proud.

From its promising beginnings of collecting as much silver as possible from the San Juans in the 1890s, to being a motion-picture and tourist phenomenon in the 1950s, and to this day being arguably the best scenic train ride in the United States. Today the now Durango & Silverton operates trains year around, with all sorts of motive power in the lead. One notable class, the K-28s of the American Locomotive Company, celebrate their 100th year of since being built, as 2023 marks that. To celebrate this occasion, the D&S is hosting two special photo charters with one or more of their K-28s being the headliners this year. The first being the Winter Photographer's Special featuring locomotive #476. During the Fall Special, the railroad backdated #476 and several coaches to appear as they would have during the 1970s. D&S kept them in this appearance for this charter as well. While it isn't 100% accurate to a typical day in 1971, since trains didn't run in the Winter, it still seemed as if we had stepped back in time to the final days of D&RGW ownership of the Silverton Branch. The train operated for two days, February 11th and 12th with many different locations selected for the photo run-bys, some new, some old. Overall this was another fantastic and successful charter hosted by the D&S and my special thanks goes out to everyone who was involved in making this possible. We're looking forward to what the railroad has to offer for the next charter.

Every Christmas season, the railroad offers Christmas-themed trains all around its system. With trains departing Tamaqua, Minersville, and Reading, it's a guaranteed fantastic ride and experience for anyone. On December 17th and 18th, the Reading & Northern hosted Christmas trains between Reading Outer Station to Port Clinton, and back. Motive power for both days would be Reading & Northern G1 Pacific #425, with GP38-2 #2011 providing power and an extra pair of eyes for the return trips. For both days, there would be three trains to Port Clinton and back. This also just so happens to be #425's final public runs before her FRA-mandated 1,472-day rebuild. Naturally, crowds were drawn to the #425. We were very thankful to be a part of this event and to see #425 in her full glory before she goes under rebuild. I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Cumbres & Toltec #484 - Last Train to ChamaArkansas Locomotive Works2022-10-29 | One of the most celebrated tourist railroads in the world is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, offering one of the most scenic train rides in North America. However, it can get quite difficult to operate a railroad that covers 64 miles through the mountains and crests at 10,019 feet above sea level, especially during the winter season. During the winter months, the railroad shuts down as the harsh weather and high amount of snow would be too much for the railroad to maintain. The end of this season would be on October 23rd, 2022. The forecast for the day would be rain, a little rain wouldn't hurt anyone. However, for those who saw the video of #463, the weather was very extreme in and around Cumbres Pass. High wind gusts, freezing temperatures, and snow everywhere. The railroad, unfortunately, decided to cancel the eastbound train that we had intended to chase, as the weather was too extreme for the train to handle. However, the westbound train was right on schedule and departed Antonito. After a little bit of waiting at Los Pinos, we heard locomotive #484 sound off its Flat Top 5 Chime and we set up. What followed was a very eventful chase through the wind and the snow. Guaranteed the majority of the shots were covered in snow and the wind is essentially everything you could hear, it was still a very interesting experience chasing this train through the snow. We would like to thank the Cumbres & Toltec, the Friend of the Cumbres & Toltec, and all the employees and volunteers for a fantastic season, and we hope to return very soon when the 2023 season begins.

I take a lot of time money, and effort into these, and I would appreciate it if you respect what I request.Cumbres & Toltec Snippet - #463 Through the BlizzardArkansas Locomotive Works2022-10-27 | During a recent visit to the Cumbres & Toltec, K-27 #463 was scheduled to haul a Brunch Train from Cumbres to Osier, and I set out to capture as much as I could. As I reached Cumbres Pass though, the weather was not in my favor. With blizzard-like conditions, I knew this would be a challenge. I captured #463 departing and at Apache. Unfortunately, the video of it at Cumbres was completely ruined by the onslaught of heavy snow pouring down, my lens was completely soaked. Nonetheless, I still set out to Apache to capture it. After waiting about 5 minutes in the cold, #463 rolled by blowing her beautiful D&RGW Hooter. Yes, conditions could have been better but nonetheless, still an awesome capture.

While the main star of the show was #476, the railroad still had its regular scheduled train to run. K-36 #480 was in charge of leading the train to Silverton and back. When she arrived in Silverton, the photo special was in a siding and the attendees were all in a photo line so the engineer of #480 put on a spectacular show, showing off her glorious Nathan 6 Chime. While yes this was limited, still was very nice to still see the regular steam operations in Durango.
