Goffe & the Goffe Brothers Publishing Company of Providence, whose masterfully composed music continues to unite people 115 years later.⭐️️ Dedicated to my great-great grandfather Joseph Baker, who sailed aboard the Lusitania on October 24, 1908, as an immigrant from Liverpool to New York, in search of a better life.⭐️ And finally, this arrangement is dedicated to the 1,197 souls who were lost aboard the ‘Lusitania’ when she was torpedoed and sunk on May 7, 1915. May they never be forgotten.————HISTORY:“Lusitania Waltzes” is a piano-based waltz dedicated to the Cunard steamship 'LUSITANIA', written by Edwin E. Goffe in 1910, and published by the Goffe Bros. Publishing Company of Providence, Rhode Island. The piece was met with positive reception, becoming a popular waltz in the eastern United States. Unfortunately, this piece quickly became obscured, then subsequently forgotten following the sinking of the Lusitania in May 1915. The Goffe Brothers were also known for their other popular pieces, such as ‘First Light Infantry March & Two-Step”, “Solmay Egyptian Intermezzo”, and “Everglades Two-Step”. ————DISCOVERING LUSITANIA WALTZES: In 2023, I embarked on a rollercoaster journey to find and preserve this lost piece of music history. With the sheet music being lost, I knew that this would prove to be a difficult project to undertake. After months of meticulous research, I was able to locate two full pages of the waltz, as well as a brief excerpt. From that point, I very roughly stitched the song together in MuseScore to create an approximate recording of what the song may have actually sounded like. This recording was released on November 17, 2023 - though was unlisted December of 2024 due to there being many issues present.Finally in March of 2025, by sheer luck, I was able to locate a listing online for this rare, lost piece. With the help of my friends at 'Titanic: Honor and Glory', we were able to pool our funds together to purchase this historic piece. It was a very exciting moment for all of us, especially me; as I knew that this wonderful lost piece would no longer be floating in limbo. In May of 2025, I had the opportunity to reach out to my good friend and master pianist Jett Pendergrass to create the very first human-played modern performance of this piece. This very recording you hear was not created with MIDI, AI, or MuseScore; but rather played by a human with extreme accuracy to the sheet music, as intended. I am extremely proud to say that I now own this very copy of "Lusitania Waltzes" and am making it publicly available for anybody to use for whichever purpose for the sake of preserving lost history. This is my personal tribute to one of my favorite ships ; The Princess Sophia - a ship whose story is seldom told in full. May we never forget the many souls who were lost aboard the Princess Sophia on October 25, 1918. 💐⚓️•——•⭐️⚠️ DISCLAIMER : This simulation is based on historical information that was meticulously researched and stitched together for this simulation. With the vessel having been lost with all aboard it, it is impossible to know for sure what happened to her in her final moments. My simulation here is intended to represent what may have happened when the Princess Sophia met her end, as based upon all evidence available.•——•⭐️⚓️ BREIF HISTORY :The S.S Princess Sophia was a standalone passenger liner built for fast, comfortable, safe, and reliable costal service for the Canadian Pacific Line in 1911. The vessel was 245 ft (75m) in length, and could carry up to 500 passengers. Throughout her short life, the Princess Sophia had a somewhat uneventful career. For a brief time period, she served honorably as a troop transport during The Great War, and was afterwards, refitted. At Approx. 2:10 A.M, on October 24, 1918, the Princess Sophia ran into Vanderbilt Reef. Throughout her over 40 hours on the reef, help would come and go, though little could be done to assist the wrecked liner as a result of the heavy seas, winds, and dangerous reef she sat upon. On October 26, 1918 at 4:50 P.M, the wireless operator aboard the Princess Sophia transmits several desperate messages. "Ship foundering on reef. Come at once." The vessel was at this time, rotating upon the reef slowly after partially being freed from the reef as a result from the rising tides. It is believed that the vessel was not yet sinking by this time, but was rather being viciously slammed by heavy seas. The vessel throughout this time would slowly take on water as she continued to rotate. Between 5:50P.M and 6:00P.M. (times disputed), the Princess Sophia would finally dislodge itself from the reef, and go under. As the vessel slid down the submerged slope of the reef, submerging deeper and deeper in rapid succession, a few of her boilers bursted, causing oil to gush out of the vessel. As indicated by early dives to the wreck of the vessel, the Princess Sophia destroyed herself as she went down. She was found twisted, partially collapsed, deckhouses partially shaved away, and decks partially pancaked upon each other ; which is a telltale sign of a swift, and violent sinking. Of the 364 who were aboard, there were no survivors, except for a dog who was found ashore covered in oil, and badly hurt. An officer of the vessel also made it ashore, but unfortunately slipped on the rocky shoreline, soaked and slippery from the heavy storms, and was lost after falling upon them. He was found several days later. All that remained of the Princess Sophia was but a mast, partially sticking above the water.My hope is that this simulation can provide a better understanding to how the Princess Sophia may have met her end. This is dedicated as a tribute to those who were lost.
