All rights reserved.After several tragedies, including the passing of their son, their home destroyed by fire, and the devastating illness, diphtheria leaving Almanzo partially crippled, it was decided in 1894, Laura, Almanzo and their seven year old daughter would pack the remainder of their belongings into their wagon, and travel the 600 miles from DesMet, South Dakota to Mansfield, Missouri. The journey took six weeks.The Wilders’ purchased a 40-acre farm naming it “Rocky Ridge”. A single roomed log cabin would be their home for the first winter. During their second year, an additional room was added to the side. In Spring of1896, the second room was painstakingly moved from the log cabin, to its current location forming the kitchen of what was to be the family’s new home. An additional room made for a two roomed house and an upstairs attic space bedroom for Rose.It would take the Wilders 17 years to finish building their farmhouse. The completed home comprised of the kitchen, a dining room, the attic room, a bedroom, a bathroom, an office, the music room, a parlour and the library. Laura passed in 1957. Everything we see in the house is how she left it.Rose became a journalist, a world traveler and a well-known author. On her return to Rocky Ridge in 1928, she decided that her parents could do with a retirement home. She decided to have one built on the back of Rocky Ridge Farm. It was here in the “Rock House” that Laura penned her first few “Little House” books.Laura and Almanzo stayed at the Rock House from 1928 until 1936. During this time, Rose had been living in the farmhouse. With more traveling, Rocky Ridge Farmhouse became empty, so Laura and Almanzo decided to move back to their original home which they had greatly missed.
