CanopyAs world leaders gather at COP27 in Egypt to discuss decarbonization to stabilize the climate, the world’s first commercial-scale textile-to-textile pulp mill, Renewcell, opened today.
Strong market demand has played a key role in Renewcell coming to market at scale. It is estimated that over 90 million tonnes of apparel waste accumulate in landfills every year, while over 200 million trees are logged annually for fabrics like viscose and rayon. By recycling materials destined for landfill, we can help protect the world’s forests. Solutions already exist — it’s time to scale them!

It all started with paper — authors like Alice Munro and Margaret Atwood helped shift the publishing world toward recycled paper. Then, we hit the runway, collaborating with fashion giants like Zara and Stella McCartney to protect forests through our CanopyStyle initiative. 🌱✨
Now, we’re tackling paper packaging with Pack4Good, man-made cellulosic fibres (MMCFs) with CanopyStyle, and scaling Next Gen fibre alternatives to keep climate-critical forests standing.
From book publishers to fashion, we’re changing the ‘take, make, waste’ model to protect the planet. Learn how far we’ve come and where we’re headed next! 🚀 canopyplanet.org/campaigns

Many of these trees come from the world’s most vital forests. Forests we need to keep standing.
At the same time millions of tonnes of agricultural residue are burned, and ocean waste accumulates and rots on beaches becoming a major issue for local communities.
Canopy’s innovation partner GreenKey sees a way to turn all these problems into packaging solutions.
GreenKeys’s innovative technology can process everything from hemp, to rice straw, to tomato leaves and sargassum seaweed to make packaging boxes.
Their process uses 90% less energy, 91% less water and uses far fewer chemicals than traditional methods.
It’s one of many NextGen solutions that makes waste circular, saves forests and addresses the climate and biodiversity crises.
These are the solutions we need to scale and implement.

Canopy, a solutions-driven non-profit that has partnered with over 900 global brands, from H&M Group and Zara, to Penguin Random House, Stella McCartney, and LVMH, will receive $60 million in funding from The Audacious Project to catalyze the commercial production of low-carbon and circular solutions across the globe. Such a move will have planetary impacts for the climate and biodiversity.
Housed at TED, The Audacious Project is a collaborative funding initiative that drives social impact on a grand scale. Every year, they select a group of bold solutions to the world's most urgent challenges. This year, Canopy was one of the selectees for its critical work in advancing vital forest-free supply chains.
Canopy will utilize the funds to accelerate the commercial-scale production of low-impact and circular clothing, paper, and packaging solutions that don’t rely on pulp from Ancient and Endangered Forests. These Next Gen Solutions are derived from what is usually landfilled (waste textile, waste food scraps), or burned (agricultural residues), to create new fabrics, paper, pulp, and packaging. Next Gen alternatives have on average 95% to 130% less GHG emissions, 88% to 100% less land use impacts, and 5x lower impact on biodiversity.

#leuser #sumatra #forestsEcofriendly paper packaging made from barley straw reduce air pollution, used by Corona & IKEACanopy2022-09-07 | Every year over 3.2 billion trees are cut down for paper packaging and for fashion fabrics like viscose. Many of these trees come from the world’s most vital, carbon and biodiversity-rich forests.
At the same time, millions of tonnes of agricultural residue are burned becoming a major source of air pollution in cities like New Delhi, India. Luckily we have solutions to solve both of those crises.
Craste, based in India, is one of Canopy's innovation solution partners implementing them. Craste’s innovative technology takes residues such as rice and barley straw left after the harvest and saves them from the burn pile by turning them into packaging boxes.
Their process is 100% tree-free, requires ⅓ the water of traditional processes, provides a guaranteed income for farmers, and keeps 1460 kg of C02 per tonne of straw out of the atmosphere by preventing crop burning.
Their low-impact packaging products are already being used by companies from Corona to Ikea.

The bespoke dress, worn by cover model Monroe Bergdorf, is made of Liva Reviva, a viscose fabric made with 30% cotton textile scraps. The cotton scraps, normally a waste product, are regenerated into pristine Next Generation fibre.
Liva Reviva is just one Next Gen textile getting ready to replace viscose made from forests. Others included in Circular Chic or coming online soon are REFIBRA™, a lyocell made with 30% cotton textile scraps, and ReVisco™, which contains 50% post-consumer cotton textiles and that’s just the beginning.
Currently, more than 200 million trees are logged every year to make fashion textiles like viscose and rayon, with many of these trees coming from the world’s most vital forests. Along with this issue of unsustainable sourcing, it is estimated that in just one year, landfills accumulate 92 million tonnes of textile waste globally.
A growing number of producers are regenerating this waste to make Man-made Cellulosic Fibre textiles like viscose and rayon from recycled textiles such as old cotton jeans and t-shirts otherwise destined for landfills. If all Man-made Cellulosic Fibres were made with 50% Next Gen cellulose, the world would have 100 million more trees left standing every year.
We look forward to seeing more fashionable, beautiful clothing made from low-carbon, circular, recycled, and innovative fabrics.
Let the Next Generation start now!

Every year, over 3.2 billion trees are cut down to make fashion fabrics like viscose and rayon or paper packaging.
Through Circular Chic, we want to highlight NextGen Solutions — turning waste, which is usually burned or landfilled, into stylish clothing or paper packaging alternatives.
