World Orangutan Day 2023 Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust 2023-08-19 | 🤔 Do you know what fruit this is? 🤔 🦧 Native to southeast Asia, rambutan is closely related to lychee and is eaten by orangutans in the wild. Our orangutans enjoyed peeling the hairy outer shell to get to the delicious fruit inside for #WorldOrangutanDay! 🐾 The orangutans at Jersey Zoo are ambassadors for their wild counterparts, inspiring generations of visitors and conservationists. Sumatran orangutans are Critically Endangered, facing many threats including habitat destruction caused by farming and poaching for the illegal pet trade. 🌿 In partnership with the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), we help to protect these amazing apes and other Sumatran wildlife by providing husbandry and conservation knowledge. Key staff from SOCP often take part in our DESMAN course, which gives them training and hands-on experience at Jersey Zoo. 💚 We also helped with the design of “Haven”, a centre for conservation and education near Medan, Sumatra.

Golden Lion Tamarin Day 2023 Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust 2023-08-02 | 🐒 Happy #InternationalGoldenLionTamarinDay! 🐒 🌳 These adorable monkeys are native to the south-eastern rainforests of Brazil, where there’s only an estimated 1,400 adults left. Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust 2023-07-18 | 🎂 To celebrate his third birthday, keepers treated Tafari to an “insect cake”. 🐜 Made up of insect powder, banana and topped with a number three made out of butternut squash, the cake may not be to your taste, but was a delicious snack for this desert-dweller. 🐾 Aardvarks have quite an appetite, as they can eat approximately 50,000 ants or termites in a single day!

Secret sculpture joins Tortoise Takeover trail Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust 2023-07-10 | 🐾 Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust would like to 'off-shell-y' welcome a new ‘hare-o’ sculpture to the trail. This well-kept secret sculpture, ‘Love to Run’ brings a unique and exciting twist to Tortoise Takeover. 🐾🐇 Making a big splash with its arrival at St Catherine’s breakwater, it used local rib operator Jersey Seafaris to make its grand entrance.🎨This elegant hare is nearly two metres tall and has been beautifully painted by renowned local artist Nick Romeril.💚Each week, the hare will be on the move, visiting various tortoises at locations around the island. It joins the trail as a nod to Aesop’s well-known fable ‘The Tortoise and The Hare’. At the end of Tortoise Takeover, the hare will join the other large tortoise sculptures in being auctioned off to raise vital funds for a new reptile and amphibian house at Jersey Zoo.

Birth of world’s rarest fruit bat caught on camera Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust 2023-05-24 | 🦇 For the first time, Jersey Zoo have filmed the birth of a critically endangered Livingstone’s fruit bat. Born to eight-year-old Nymeria, the fascinating moment was recorded by Curator of Mammals, Dominic Wormell, and student Ksenia Potapova. 🌿 In the wild, deforestation is pushing this species to the edge of extinction, with only an estimated 1,300 remaining in their native home of the Comoros. 💚 Every birth at the zoo helps strengthen the safety net population, ensuring we don’t lose this incredible bat forever.

Meet our new geladas! Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust 2023-01-26 | 🐵 Who’s that monkeying around? 🐵 🐒 Meet our glorious group of grazing geladas. These enigmatic primates with eye-catching appearances moved in at the end of last year and have been settling in well. ♥️ You wouldn’t be alone in mistaking them for baboons, but they are in fact monkeys!
