Learn why this happens and what options actually work.
Many women notice significant perimenopause weight gain, often ranging from 10 to 20 pounds, yet feel dismissed by doctors who blame it on normal aging. This conversation looks at the real drivers behind these body composition changes, including the roles of cortisol, insulin, muscle loss, and thyroid function. We address the questions so many are asking about whether HRT for weight loss is effective, why the scale might not budge even after starting hormones, and where newer options like GLP-1 medications fit into a healthy strategy.
We also cover the essentials that remain critical for midlife health, such as prioritizing protein, fiber intake, and strength training. Maintaining muscle mass is vital, especially if you are considering medical interventions. This is the honest, evidence-based conversation about weight and aging that I wish more women were having.

#brainhealth #tamsenfadal #thetamsenshowWhy Im Still Asking Questions After 30 Years #journalism #thetamsenshowTamsen Fadal2026-09-23 | Before I was a podcaster, an author, or someone you followed on Instagram, I spent 30 years as a journalist.
And I think that matters.
For most of my adult life, my job was to sit across from people and get to the real story.
But there was also a limit to the conversations I could have on the evening news.
You have a few minutes, there’s another story coming, then commercial break…
And there were SO many subjects I wanted to go deeper on…
That’s a huge part of why I wanted to build @thetamsenshow
In a pretty short amount of time, I’ve already sat down with more than 100 experts, doctors, researchers, authors and people who have spent decades doing this work.
And yes, I’m a journalist. But I’m also the woman listening to all of this information and trying to figure out what the hell I’m supposed to do with it in my own life.
I have the same questions you do.
I want to know if the supplement actually works.
I want to know why two doctors can have completely different opinions about the same treatment.
I want someone to explain the study in a way I can understand.
I want to know what we were wrong about ten years ago and what we might still be getting wrong today.
Have I gotten everything right every single time? No.
I don’t think anyone having honest conversations about health, science and the way we live can promise you that…
Research changes fast, medicine evolves, experts disagree (a lot)
I’m constantly learning new things that make me rethink things I believed before.
What I can promise is that I’m going to keep asking.
I’ll ask the follow-up. I’ll bring in another expert. I’ll question something when it doesn’t make sense to me.
And when better information comes along, we’ll talk about that too.
Because I never wanted The Tamsen Show to be a place where I sit behind a microphone and tell you I have all the answers.
I wanted to finally have the conversations I spent years wishing we had more time for.
I may have left the newsroom, but I never stopped being a journalist.
Now I just get to ask the questions I’ve always wanted to ask.

Captain Carole Hopson left Corporate America to become an airline pilot at 50 and went on to become a United Airlines Boeing 737 Captain.
Carole dreamed of flying since age 4, built a successful corporate career—from journalism to the NFL to Foot Locker executive—spent five years saving for flight school, and reset her plan after 9/11 and becoming a mom.
In this episode of The Tamsen Show, Carole shares how she turned a childhood dream into a practical plan, what it took to enter the airline industry later than almost everyone around her, and why starting over requires more than courage.
They get into:
- How to put a date on your goal and turn a dream into a plan - The time and money it requires to pivot later in life - The importance of surrounding yourself with people who believe in your next chapter - Why deciding which fear is greater: making the leap or living with the regret - How pioneering aviator Bessie Coleman inspired Carole’s novel A Pair of Wings and her mission to help send 100 Black women to flight school through the Jet Black Foundation
If you’re exploring women in aviation or how to become a pilot later in life, this is your proof it’s not too late.

Yes, I wanted to lose the belly fat. I wanted to feel confident in my body again. I’m NOT at all ashamed to say that.
But learning about visceral fact, and why it matters for our long-term health was the wake up call I needed.
This section became such an important part of writing my book, How To Menopause.
There is SO much information out there, and so much of the science can feel overwhelming, contradictory or impossible to translate into your actual life.
I wanted to change that.
You deserve answers without needing a medical degree to understand them.
This isn’t just about how we look as we age, it’s about getting stronger, living longer and feeling amazing while we do it 🩷🩷
