Nib Swap Tips - Jinhao 80 Chris Saenz 2022-11-20 | In this video I share my success story of swapping 3 Jinhao 80 nibs using tips from pen friend +viewer Neil Piper and ideas from Doug's video at Inkquiring Minds' channel. I use some older pens to demonstrate a couple of things I ran into. Ultimately I needed 4 things:* Lobster band (gripper of any kind that works for you* Small eye glass/jewelry repair screwdriver* Duct Tape (you can try regular tape I had no luck with it though)* Tissue/KleenexThe first pen was easiest ... it took only a slight levering of the nib with the screwdriver and then I pulled the nib off with a lobster band. The second two were extremely stubborn and the screwdriver didn't budge the nib ... so I turned to the duct tape. The entire feed and nib came out and so I had to do both pen #2 and pen #3 in two parts ... the feed with nib came out first and then I repeated the duct tape and tissue procedure to free the nibs. My philosophy on these pens is that I will treat them like I do my Moonman Mini Wancai's ... I leave dedicated nibs in those pens because the nibs on them also pull out with lots of difficulty with tape (for me). Everyone's experience and risk tolerance will be different. LOLI hope this video helps at least one person to be able to free their nib off the Jinhao 80. I will say however, the Fine nib that came on mine was so good ... I've carefully tucked it away for future use. So don't feel compelled to swap nibs if you like a nice juicy Fine nib and if you get as lucky as I did .. you could be all set with the stock nib that comes on yours. Good luck and please let me know of any other tricks and tips you know of because I love these pens so much it would not shock me if I were to get another one someday. Jinhao 80 Fountain Pen Talk Chris Saenz 2022-11-17 | In this video, I give my thoughts about the Jinhao 80 Fountain Pen! This is an affordable ($8 or less) Chinese lookalike but not a duplicate of the Lamy 2000. My pen came with a very smooth Fine nib and there is a lot to love about the pen! A Lamy style nib, cartridge converter, smooth nib, under $8 price tag and stunning looks to start with. My nib will not yet come off ... several other reviewers have been able to get the nib off and replace it with a Lamy style nib which I hope to be able to do so that I can enjoy a Lamy Broad nib on mine. I'm just being cautious not to break my pen. We look at comparison pens, writing samples, a few measurements and I talk about what I like and don't like about it. I wrote with DeAtramentis Alexander Hamilton for this review. I have to say, my Jinhao 80 is such a great little writer, I'm happy with it just as it is and will be really excited if I eventually do get one that I can put a Broad nib on but for now I'm certainly happy with the purchase!I encourage you to watch chrisrap52s review -- he really has some interesting nib talk and I watched his video after I'd purchased my pen and written with it!NOTE: I had a little bit of a microphone issue so you may need to use higher volume and/or captions if possible .... Book Talk: The Power of Regret Chris Saenz 2022-11-12 | In this video, I talk about the awesome book I just finished: The Power of Regret by Daniel H. Pink.This book really impacted me and I'm using the tools I learned in the book! I highly recommend the book and it's an interesting and relatable book! In my video I talk about how I worked with a current regret (of selling my car a little over a year ago) by applying the ideas in the book. The subject really has me intrigued because studying it revealed a not too healthy relationship that I have with regret. I could be more effective in life by applying the things in this book so I wanted to share it on the chance it might help someone else too.I plan to continue practicing the tools he recommends and I'm excited about the progress I've already made. I used the example of regretting selling my car even though that is a very shallow thing I think and there are much more important more emotionally charged regrets ... but it's a good topic for me to start on because it's not as touchy as say an estrangement or other core regrets that fall even closer to: foundation, boldness, moral and connection regrets ... connection regrets are perhaps my biggest ikky area but I was far more comfortable talking about my car fiasco. Jinhao X159 Review Chris Saenz 2022-11-09 | In this video I give my opinion on the Jinhao X159 Fine nib Acrylic Fountain Pen in Black with Silver Trim. This pen has a lot going for it! Although, as I explain in the video, it is not my favorite of the 2 Jinhao 159 models -- I prefer the metal one because of the nib size mainly.This fountain pen has a #8 nib which is the only #8 nib I own. So I'm limited in nib width when writing with this one.Ink I used in the Jinhao X159 was Pilot Iroshizuku Take-SumiThe red Jinhao 159 I was using has Colorverse Red Shift ink in it. I found a lot to like in this new pen: it's lightweight, it has a beautiful elegant/simple design, and it's very affordable. Here are a few measurements:Weight of the X159 - 28.2 grams (with ink) Weight of the original metal 159 - 48.4 grams (without ink)Weight of the X159 uncapped - 17.6 gramsLength capped: 147 mmLength un-posted: 132 mmGrip Diameter: 13 mm (the original 159 grip diameter 12 mm tapered so it varies)On the minus side: I feel very limited in nib size/choice and not only that but my particular nib although it does not skip or hard start --- needs some tuning which I will complete when I get some more brass shim. Meanwhile, it writes acceptably but I don't really like the writing experience yet. Also, there are not as many color choices with the X159 as there are in the metal 159s. I think people who love Fine nibs, light weight pens, and easy to maintain affordable pens will love this one and any nib work if needed at all should be minor and easy to accomplish. If you don't lose your pen maintaining items like I've done.These are only my opinions and there are a variety of video reviews out there ... be sure to look around because as a Broad nib person I can be rather harsh on pens with F nibs. I actually like the nibs that come on the Jinhao 159s, X750s and X450s much better (they are number 6 nibs) than this #8 nib. WARNING POSSIBLE TRIGGER WARNING CAT MEDICAL INFO FOUND OUT POSTHUMOUSLY: Thank you all so very much for all the condolences and heartfelt messages we've received about the recent loss of our cat Willy. It is never going to be the same around here without him ... he was a bright light in our home and yard and always in our hearts. I received a very late (3+ weeks after specimen from his toe abscess was taken) test result 9-29-22 which surprised me very much ... he was found to have a very resistant bacteria which the vet said she had not seen in 30 years ... I have it written down in my notebook phonetically spelled ... but she said she highly suspected it was systemic and she said probably accounts for the one lump Willy had (which she said yesterday 9-29-22 was most likely an abscess from this hideous "recardia/systemic mycardia ??? sp???" the first lump which was not found to be cancerous but was very disturbing to the 3 vets who saw him over the past 3 months... so poor Willy had so much going on. I knew that but with the addition of this information it explains some agonizing questions I had about why we didn't have longer to deal with the 2nd lump/cancer and why he didn't heal fully from the small nail abscess after antibiotics each time and careful treatment. [the vet who called me didn't know Willy had already passed ... I guess the notification didn't reach her ... I let her give me the lab result because I wanted to know whatever there was to know - then I told her what had happened ... how sick he had become and how many more appointments he had after seeing her - she had been out when we last went to that animal hospital]. Well, I have put the information away in my notebook because it hurts a lot to even research it now ... I should study it someday I guess if I ever can face it. Overall I am not frightened to learn about it if anyone knows something ... because God forbid if another of my cats ever had it ... I'd want to be ahead of the curve on figuring it out. Science is helpful ... it is amazing how hard it is in human and animal healthcare = to get real science and answers. My eyeballs and eyelids hurt from all the crying and I also have to make sure I am not stressing Coco -- he is very sensitive and he needs me to be okay. So I am diving into pens and inks as I can and also spending a great deal of time outdoors in the sun. Comparing Cosmo Air Snow & Air Light Paper Chris Saenz 2022-09-16 | In this video I compare Jet Pens Cosmo Air Snow and Cosmo Air Light Cream (both A5 and both 75 gsm) paper. Thank you to pen friend Matt W for sending the sample sheets of Cosmo Air Snow.I wrote a letter yesterday on Air Snow and immediately realized that I like it better than Air Light .. but it's still rather mysterious as to why. In fact it could be that these are simply 2 different colors of the same exact paper? I'm not sure. Both papers show off the ink shading and beauty very nicely. In my mind and finger tips ... the Snow paper feels just slightly smoother ... not at all fuzzy. There is almost no discernible difference in the white and cream shade of these papers -- it's very subtle. All I know is that my money will go for the Cosmo Air Snow because it just feels perfect and looks great too. This paper seems especially compatible with Robert Oster inks - a great plus in my book! My beloved CVS Caliber paper does not play as nicely with Robert Oster inks.Both papers are $11 for 100 sheets on Jet Pens. Fountain Pen ~ Ink Sample Filling Hacks Chris Saenz 2022-09-11 | In this video I talk about ink filling hacks (I show and talk about ink syringe, ink miser, rubber grommets and plastic tubing) and we concentrate on my favorite method I recently was introduced to by a viewer:Viewer/pen friend Idimiditavi Corpzone mentioned on my community tab that their favorite hack for filling the TWSBI Eco from a sample was tubing. I found the Clear Vinyl Tubing ID 3/8" OD 1/2" 10 feet long made by EZ Flo 98620 for about $6 at Lowe's and this stuff is amazing - it works like a charm (just a 3-4 " segment) to fill your Eco from a sample!!! I demonstrate and fill 2 of my Ecos from samples in the video. I plan to keep the 3/8" ID rubber tubing pieces as part of my everyday use fountain pen kit. I will share out this tubing over time with pen friends ... it's unfortunate that the cheapest mailing is now $4 for such a small item ... so it has to make sense and go with other items over time but I'm not sorry I bought the 10 foot roll ... it's about the same price as the ink miser was and it truly will get used + shared and be worth it over time.Link to Brandon Lee's Goulet Pen Company Ink Sample Hack video:youtube.com/watch?v=DHX95HN2pRcI hope you got some good ideas from this video. It also comes in Fine nib and translucent blue and black and they are going to carry wood versions of it too.Hopefully these will become more available soon! I will explore the pen more and report back in September as to how it's going. I expect to use this for Col-O-ring index cards as well as for test writing samples on my 8 inks each month as part of the progress report. Crafters Square Water Brush Pen Set - Review Chris Saenz 2022-07-10 | In this video I show you the Crafter's Square water brush pen set I found at Dollar Tree for $1.25 while looking for greeting cards. Even when figuring in our Texas $8.25% sales tax = these are like .68 cents each and worth it in my opinion! I like to use water brushes with my notetaking with fountain pens AND I had been wishing for a brush that fit into my Nock Sinclair ... these do!We try the brushes out in a Unison Composition notebook (paper made in vietnam) and on Tomoe River 68 gsm paper in an old ink journal of mine. These pens are 6 inches long capped and about 5 and 3/4" inches long uncapped. They have snap caps but the section unscrews clockwise so if you buy these just be aware of that. It took me some time and a video to figure that out. In this video, I take you through my thought process of choosing my new 12 favorite inks from the 12 top inks I spoke of in 2021 and the 12 shown in part one of this series. Progress Report- June 2022 Chris Saenz 2022-06-14 | This is my mid-month progress report as to how my inks and pens for June 2022 are working out! I inked 3 more pens since the original 8 ... I know ... but it has been so much fun experimenting with a new nib and of course I needed a comparison pen/nib. Overall things are steady here and I continue to work on my garden, and yard skills. Manuel is waiting to see the specialist but his chemical stress test result was read to us at the PC and it was good news. So we're hopeful. Inks and pens and writing continue to be my happy spot. I putter away at letter writing and I journal everyday. The Cosmo Air Light 75 gsm paper from Jet Pens is great so far! Chatty ad free ramble about my channel and book Im reading! Chris Saenz 2022-03-29 | If long rambles are not your thing ... then this is not your video. In this video I talk about my You Tube channel within the context of a book I'm reading .... as I contemplate the future of my channel and the direction of life in general. Also, I do mention the world situation the war in the Ukraine and my unease about world tension plus my recent study of history and geopolitics. If these topics are not okay I totally understand avoiding this video. I talk about how I have discovered the complexities and the long history of conflict but I tie it to my 70s/80s upbringing, and my military service in the 80s up until 1991 when I separated from the USAF. (SSgt. in Public Affairs). NOTE: if I need to I will turn off comments on this video ... hopefully we can keep comments kind because I won't allow any harsh uncalled for content ... we can switch over to the Inked Pens Video for discussion if that has to happen. Thank you for keeping the comments civilized. I am for PEACE worldwide. When I said I didn't have an opinion I meant on the global unrest and impact of the War in Ukraine .... Progress Report - March 2022 Chris Saenz 2022-03-15 | In this video - I talk about how my 8 inked fountain pens + inks are going for March 2022. I continue to explore each ink in the Unison composition book that pen friend Marilyn sent. It has great paper + near as I can tell just as good as CVS Caliber. Coming in at 50 cents a notebook these are a bargain for fountain pen people!!!!! I continue to haunt the Target looking for them but they get snatched up immediately by someone. LOL I also continue to write letters (admittedly, slowly and way behind ... hampered by world and family concerns). Book Review - Stolen Focus by Johann Hari Chris Saenz 2022-02-25 | In this video I give my opinions and talk about the book, Stolen Focus (Why You Can't Pay Attention - and How to Think Deeply Again) by Johann Hari. amazon.com/Stolen-Focus-Attention-Think-Deeply/dp/0593138511/ref=sr_1_1?crid=W7PT8B39T53S&keywords=Stolen+Focus&qid=1645809767&s=books&sprefix=stolen+focus%2Cstripbooks%2C592&sr=1-1I highly recommend this book for everyone and especially for anyone who is interested in improving your focus, understanding what can rob us of our attention/focus, ADHD, effects of technology and social changes on children. This books is one I will not forget or be finished with for a long time to come. Although I must take back the library copy, I have lots of notes I took on this book and my "work" has just begun on tailoring my own program for improving my focus (from the menu of many things I learned in this book)! I can already sense change happening just from the education I got reading this book!This is not a self-help book but you will find a lot of ideas and things you can try. The author gives us 12 "causes" (of impaired focus) to think about and to study. His style is to research very thoroughly and present many sides of each topic. I love that and you don't find that in all books or content these days. I love that he didn't just focus on one contributing factor -- the usual being technology -- and yet he thoroughly covered that cause (of lack of focus) in the book. IN fact he covers everything from the loss of recess in school to our diets, the speed and stress levels, collapse of sustained reading, you name it! Giving us many angles in which to approach healing our attention. I didn't feel compelled to get up and research everything mentioned because he did such a good job of covering each topic in a concise easy to digest way.As someone diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 40, I was especially interested in his (Chapter 13) research on The Rise of ADHD and How We are Responding to It. My mind is still reeling from the "furniture rearrangement" my brain got after reading that chapter. You'll have to read it for yourself but for me it gave me hope that I have only ever scratched the surface of healing my focus/attention issues and this book is my launching pad for making serious and impactful changes -- still keeping with my refusal to use meds for it. So, that's my opinion -- this was one of the most worthwhile books I've read in YEARS. Callifolio - Andrinople - Ink Profile Collab Chris Saenz 2022-02-01 | This is my revisit/profile of Callifolio Andrinople ink - and my submission for the collab with Miss Marilyn Darling -- we are releasing our reviews at the same time and I look forward to seeing how our opinions may match or differ!!! You can find his channel here:youtube.com/c/marilyndarlingshowIn my previous visit with this ink it was part of my red/pink/magenta study in 30 inks 30 days style and I didn't spend at much time with this ink. At that time I said this ink "had a lot to offer" "is gorgeous" and "has nice medium shading". I was comparing it with KOBE #41 Suma Riku Rose at the time. This time, I wrote with the ink for a week -- several pen pal letters, pages in my notetaking and journaling and I tried it out in both types of Tomoe River paper and the CVS Caliber paper that I love.In this video I show you writing samples, comparison swatches and tiles and we go over a final "report card" studying several aspects of this ink. My opinion is very similar to the first ink review except I am now familiar with many more pinky red purpley inks so there is MUCH more competition for my ink-attention lol.
