After about two-thirds of the way home, Yuri says her goodbyes to her friends and enters the Shichiyama neighborhood around 3 pm, slowly making her way home on a clear comfortable day. Kozue Sato: Japans controversial police investigation (Documentary) Rhetorica 2024-06-16 | On the 1st of July 2008, the body of 17-year-old Kozue Sato is discovered in the mountainous and wooded area near Iwate prefecture’s former Kawai village. While the investigation just started to get ground, and the body was still not officially identified, a few hours later an acquaintance of the victim crashes his car a 2 hour drive away from the scene of the crime. The acquaintance is 28-year-old Katsuyuki Obara, the boyfriend of a friend of the victim. The following morning investigators receive calls from family, friends and even Obara himself that he is at Unosu cliff with the intention to jump to his death. Though when Obara’s father shows up, the 28-year-old is gone and even after multiple officers search on foot and by boat, only a few items remain on the cliff’s edge as prove of Obara’s prior presence. While investigators seemed to quickly link Obara’s strange behavior to Kozue Sato’s death and soon placed him on Japan’s national wanted list, others seem to believe there is more to this story. Let’s explore the facts of the investigation, the events leading up to Kozue’s death and the fight of an investigative journalist for the truth against media and police only to end up losing his life in the process. Asami Chida: Japans Mysterious Disappearance Case (Documentary) Rhetorica 2024-03-06 | It's Tuesday the 6th of March 2001 in Hokkaido's Muroran city, Japan. Entrance exams caused 16-year old Asami Chida's high school to be closed, giving her the day off. While Asami worked part-time at the branch of a bakery near her home, she aspired to work at the main bakery downtown close to her high school. Before she could transfer though, she was told to attend a coffee making course given by the owner of the bakery. That morning, Asami called the bakery and said she'd stop by somewhere after 1 pm. Though, when she took the bus and passed the bakery a few minutes before 1 pm, she strangely stayed in the bus for 3 more stops, only to get off at the Saty shopping center. Half an hour later, Asami took a bus back to the bakery. While she had likely arrived at the bus stop near the bakery, and taken two calls from a supposed boyfriend around the time of her expected arrival, she suddenly disappeared soon after and her PHS device got disconnected. Let's take a look into the investigation into this strange disappearance, possible theories and the impact the disappearance has had on Muroran city. The Unsolved Case of Namiko Takaba (Documentary) Rhetorica 2023-12-24 | In the afternoon of the 13th of November, 1999, the body of 32-year-old Namiko Takaba was discovered in an apartment where she lived with her husband Satoru and son Kohei in Nagoya’s Nishi Ward. Those who found Namiko’s body initially believed it to be an urgent medical problem, though when emergency personnel arrived Namiko was pronounced dead at the scene due to wounds in her neck. Police were immediately called to figure out what happened to Namiko. Upon further inspection, investigators did not only find multiple clues inside the Takaba’s apartment, but also came across traces of blood forming a route of several hundreds of meters zigzagging through the adjacent residential area. A suspicious woman was seen walking along the route by eyewitnesses, though she seemed to have vanished into thin air. This video is an overview of the investigation into Namiko Takaba’s passing, the most proposed theories and the impact the incident had on the lives of husband Satoru and son Kohei.I’ve selected to cover this Japanese case not only for its mystery, but also because I believe this story deserves all the attention it needs for it to be solved. While the case seems to have gained a lot of attention over the years in Japan, it seems to be lesser known in other parts of the world. The Mysterious Toyoake Family Murders (Documentary) Rhetorica 2023-11-02 | In the early morning of the 9th of September, in a quiet suburban area of Aichi prefecture’s Toyoake city, the stand-alone home of the Kato family was set on fire. Not long after the fire was extinguished, police found 4 of the 5 family members’ bodies in the house. Mother Toshiyo and daughter Rina’s bodies had been stabbed multiple times, while sons Yuki and Shogo had been hit with a blunt object. Father Hiroto was working overtime at his company an hour drive away from his home. Investigators struggled with the investigation due to the burned down crime scene, very little evidence and only a few eye witness accounts. A few months after the the murder-arson incident happened, new information came to light, which made media outlets point their fingers at father Hiroto after initially receiving sympathy from the public. In this documentary we’ll explore the investigation into this murder-arson case, possible theories and the effort of family and friends in their attempts to help police solve the case. I found out about this case through the “Sora no kai” website while working on the documentary for the Junko Kobayashi murder-arson case. While there’s only a little evidence police could work with, lots of speculations circulate the internet. I’ve tried to objectively put this case together, so that you’ll be able to form your own opinions and insights. This case is extremely heartbreaking, especially for the family members who are still trying their best to help police solve this case. The Unsolved Nanpei Owada Supermarket Murders (Documentary) Rhetorica 2023-09-10 | On the 30th of July 1995, in a quite suburb of Tokyo’s Hachioji city, Noriko Inagaki and Megumi Yabuki work their evening shift at the Nanpei Owada supermarket. During their shift, off-duty part-time employee Hiromi Maeda joins Megumi as they talk about attending the nearby Bon Odori festival after work. At 9:00 pm the store closes and the three employees move the proceedings upstairs to the office on the second floor. About an hour later, the three employees are found murdered in the second floor’s office. I found out about this case after working on the Junko Kobayashi case, as both are long-standing unsolved murderer cases from the 90s that receive public money to reward those that come forward with important information about the case. Striking to me in this particular case is the violent way the murders took place, whereas two of the three victims were still high schoolers. While a robbery is more likely, I can’t help but feel somewhat in conflict with the completely unnecessary murders of the women as the office's safe was barely protected throughout the day. The Mysterious Unsolved Murder of Junko Kobayashi (Documentary) Rhetorica 2023-07-22 | On the 9th of September 1996, a report was called in to the fire department about a fire at the house of the Kobayashi family in Tokyo’s Katsushika ward. After fire fighters put out the fire, the body of 21 year old Junko Kobayashi was discovered on the second floor. It soon became clear that the Sophia University student, who intended to go to the United States in just 2 days as an exchange student, was stabbed multiple times before the house was set on fire. In this video we’ll go over the murder, current evidence, theories as to what happened and the investigation efforts of both officials as well as those of the Kobayashi family. I stumbled upon this unsolved murder case while investigating some other unsolved mysteries. Due to reading about Kenji Kobayashi’s determination to solve his daughter’s murder, I immediately became invested and tried my best to create a summary for others to learn about what happened. The interviews shown in this short overview are truly heartbreaking and I hope Kenji and his family will succeed in finding the culprit, so that his decades of effort will at least give him some closure. Inside a warehouse, the body of a 66-year old woman was found encased in concrete inside a metal drum. Police initially believed this to be an isolated murder case, for which local grandmother Miyoko Sumida (64) was suspected to be involved.
