Creating a Luxurious Red Inspired Fashion Shoot Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-07-19 | In this Photo Deconstruction I'm going to take you behind the scenes of a fashion shoot using my signature color red. 0:00 Intro1:18 Behind the Scenes2:22 Lighting2:59 Gear3:43 Captured in camera5:31 Final Image6:16 Post ProcessingIf you follow my work you know that my favorite color by far is red! It's bold, commading, passionate... you name it! That's why I was super excited to hear that Pantone's Color of the Year for 2023 was Viva Magenta! While it's not exactly a perfect "red" if you look at the color (pantone.com/articles/color-of-the-year/what-is-viva-magenta) you can see that it's mostly a red with just a shift of magenta in it. Each year I set out to create shoots based on that color, so this shoot was loosely based on that. For this shoot I wanted to craft an image with depth, drama, and emotion using red in a unique way. To avoid a flat look, I created a corner set using a Gravity Backdrops background where the subject appears to be nestled in the seam, adding a dynamic feel to the shot.π‘ LightingMy main was a Westcott Optical spot for precise control over lighting on the subject's face and torso, while a large umbrella with diffusion filled in the shadows. Behind the scenes of a vibrant Pride-themed photoshoot Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-06-21 | βHappy Pride! Iβm super excited to take you behind the scenes of a vibrant Pride-themed photoshoot with makeup artist Collin Rishell. To bring this colorful Pride-inspired photo idea to life, I use a seven strobe lighting setup and color gels β each contributing its own unique element β to create a captivating rainbow lighting effect that complements Collinβs rainbow makeup. 1:10 β Setting Up the Background2:10 β Introduce the Main Light 2:45 β Add Rim Lights 3:20 β Experiment with Shutter Drag 4:30 β Capturing the Shot 5:00 β Wrap UpLetβs dive into the lighting setup ππ‘β¬οΈ1. Setting Up the Background I use 4 Profoto strobes, each equipped with a grid and a different color gels (pink, orange, yellow, and blue). The grids create a concentrated, tight pocket of light resulting in splashes of color to create the rainbow effect on the background.2. Introduce the Main LightThe Westcott Optical spot as a main light allows me to illuminate my subject with a slice of light and now spill light onto the background and maintains the saturation of the gels. 3. Add Rim LightsI use two 1x4' softboxes with grids with purple gels. These two lights add another color to the scene and help to further separate the subject from the background.4. Experimenting with Shutter DragIn this step, I used a slow shutter speed and move the camera during the longer exposure. This technique creates blurred streaks in the image, adding a vibrant, dynamic effect to the photo.β Pro Tip: When using the shutter drag technique, I recommend turning off the modeling light on your main light. This keeps the focus on the subject's face crisp while still allowing the background lights to create a blurred effect. I loved working with Collin @collin_rishell on this shoot! Making Magic in Milan: Crafting the Perfect Golden Sunset Fashion Photo! AI Inspired Beauty Shoot | Is this the Future of Photography? Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-03-15 | #ai #artificialintelligence #midjourney #aiphotography Unless youβve been living under a rock, you no doubt have heard all of the dissention that AI (artificial intelligence) has created in the art community. From ethics to legality, all manner of artists have been up in arms either embracing or condemning it. So is it friend or foe? One thing Iβve learned from my short time playing with the amazing AI art tools is that this itβs probably going to be here for the long haul and that I might as well get on the bandwagon and embrace it as a friend, treating it as just another tool to help me realize my creative vision.You might be asking yourself, isnβt AI cheating? The short answer is ... it depends. Youβre still telling the computer what you want to see and it might help aid in the end result, or it might help inspire you to go in a different direction. Personally, I think itβs helpful for my creative team when crafting things like crazy makeup, outfits or headpieces and that is what todayβs shoot is all about! Our makeup artist used AI to come up with some examples of what we could do for this shoot. We didn't want to replicate things exactly but what AI provided helped to inspire the direction we headed in. π‘ Lighting (4)1. The main light here is a magnum reflector with grid. I chose this hard light modifier to give the light a punchy look. 2. The second strobe we introduced used a 10 degree grid to help lift the shadows under the modelβs chin. 3. The 3rd strobe is on a floor stand behind the model pointed at the background to provide separation and a gradient background. 4. Last but not least I introduced a 1x4β strip softbox with grid and purple gel as a hair light since the modelβs hair was blending in a bit too much with the background. π So how do you feel about using AI as part of your workflow? Creating a Vibrant Fashion Image with Gels Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-03-01 | I love using gels, itβs one of the most powerful ways to add super saturated colors into your photographs. Whether itβs to add a kiss of color to the background, fill to the shadows, or maybe just as a rim light. For this 5 light setup I use gels for all of the above!ββββββThe image shown here was taken during my Fashion Intensive Workshop that I hold annually. The main light here is a Westcott Optical Spot with a kit lens focused on the modelβs face. 2. The 2nd and 3rd lights are 1x4β strip soft boxes used as rim lights to help separate the model from the background, otherwise sheβd just be a floating head since the Optical Spot creates such a tight slice of light. The strips also are gridded to control the spill of light and using an orange gel (note: not CTO, but rather a much stronger orange). 3. Same as above4. I added a medium umbrella with diffusion and cyan gel as a fill light to make the shadows rich with color. 5. Glamorous Valentines Day Themed Beauty Shoot Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-02-08 | If you follow me on social media you can see that I LOVE to create timely thematic images for the holidays. It's a create opportunity to collaborate with my creative time to make eye catching images that are timely for the season and share worthy! For this Valentineβs Day themed shoot Iβm bringing out all the stops and playing with unusual light modifiers, color grading, filters and more. For this shoot we decided it would be fun to play around with both reflections and the color pink. I used a Savage Universal Coral background to help reinforce the color theory we were going for and a rose gold piece of plexiglass for the model to lean on, anchoring the scene and also giving us something visually interesting.π‘LightingThe main light is an optical spot, utilizing the leafs inside to create a tight slice of light on the the modelβs face. The second light is another optical spot, this time being used on the background with a heart gobo projection on the background. Last but not least I added a bare bulb bouncing into the ceiling to provide fill light since the image was a bit too dark for what I had envisioned with only the 2 lights. Now that the lighting is where I want it itβs time to play with some more creative elements, in this case using a North Star filter which will create these amazing starburst on the reflective surfaces. I also played around with Lens Baby Omni in front of the lens to create even more reflections in the image.ποΈ Post ProcessingTo tie everything together itβs important to incorporate a unifying color grade. I warmed up a few areas by adjusting the tint, white balance and then added more contrast. Valentines Day Themed Beauty Shoot using an Optical Spot Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-02-01 | In todayβs photo deconstruction Iβm going to show you a technique where I light a diffusion filter from behind with an optical spot and a gel for eye catching results. By now you probably know that my favorite new modifier is the optical spot that I helped co-design with Westcott. For those of you that may not know, an optical spot is a specialty modifier that lets you project specific patterns and slices of light on your subject/background etc. For this shoot I wanted to do a Valentineβs Day theme but something a bit different with the optical spot then I've done before.π‘LightingThe background is a Lee Heavy Frost Diffusion filter which gives me a white background, but the trick here is lighting it from behind with a heart logo, almost like a crown on the subject. What I like about using this technique is that some of the light hitting the filter also spills on to the subject proving this nice beautiful glow. Could I have just pointed the optical spot at the background to get the heart? Sure, but you wouldnβt get that glow. πThe second light is another optical spot to create a very narrow beam of light on the subjectβs face. The reason why I lit the subject like this is so that I could have areas of shadow on the face that I could gel. This is where the 3rd strobe comes into place which is a medium umbrella with diffusion and purple gel. As you can see each light has a specific job! ποΈ Post ProcessingThe straight out of camera was very close to the final image. There were only a few areas that I decided to tighten up. Creating a Warm Beauty Image with 2 Optical Spot Modifiers Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-01-18 | In todayβs Photo Deconstruction I use two optical spots to create beautiful dappled light across the subject in this warm beauty image. As you may know, Iβm more than a little obsessed with optical spots, and itβs not because I co-created one with Westcott either. I love how they allow me to create an immense amount of control in my images with tight slices of light or gobos. This image was taken during one of my hands-on fashion intensive workshops that I hold every year. π https://lindsayadler.photo/fashionintensiveπ‘LightingThe main light was an optical spot with a leaves gobo which created little pockets of light on the subjectβs face. The second light was also an optical spot with a leaves gobo pointed at the background for a textured effect.The last light was an extra large umbrella with diffusion used for fill. ποΈ Post ProcessingStraight out of camera I was happy with the image, I could have kept it as is, but I thought back to the concept and wanted to elevate the image by warming up the white balance a bit more. I added a little bit of yellow to the highlights and a bit of red/magenta to the shadows. Lastly I went in to fix a few things by retouching just to make some areas more symmetrical and clean things up.You donβt necessarily need two optical spots to achieve an image like this. Hedy Lamarr Inspired Beauty Shoot | 6 Light Setup Lindsay Adler Photography 2023-01-05 | If you follow my work you already know how much I love the Ziegfeld Follies and pretty much everything from that era, which of course includes the iconic actress Hedy Lamarr. (Learn more about her here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedy_Lamarr).Not only was Hedy a stunning performer, she also was a very talented inventor! This empowering woman was the perfect inspiration for this shoot vintage style beauty shoot.This image shown here was taken during my Timeless workshop with Chris Knight. In this workshop we take inspiration from various time periods such as old Hollywood and put our mix on them, bringing them to life for attendees to photograph. π https://lindsayadler.photo/timelessπ‘ LightingAs you can see from the BTS this is a complicated setup with 6 lights total. Iβve mentioned before I rarely go into a photo shoot with multiple lights right off the bat. I always build up and problem solve as I go along. The lighting started off simple here, but I soon realized I wasnβt getting the light needed to reflect the stars on the beautiful headpiece. In order to solve this problem we built a light tent of sorts by placing rolls of diffusion paper around the model. This gave the stars something to reflect off of and now they would actually show up. I now had to light the diffusion, which I used a Magnum reflector with grid and bare bulb with grid on the opposite side. Next I used a bare bulb with 10 degree grid as a main light on the model's face. So far weβre at 3 lights, but when I think of old Hollywood, rim lights definitely come to mind. So I added two 1x4ft strip softboxes.Last but not least is a light on the background with an Optical Spot and searchlight gobo to cast a pattern on the background just for a bit more flair.I also added a Lastolite Triflector to bounce any light back into the subjectβs face in case they move around. Adding a white mist filter gave the image the illusion of haze being in the scene, which is another iconic look for images from that era. For post processing I increased the contrast, then clarity and popped the highlights as well as converted the image to black and white. I also added a film grain to look like old film. Lastly, in Photoshop I cleaned up some of the background and stars to make things more symmetrical. π Whew! That was a complicated breakdown for sure. Holiday Beauty Photoshoot with DIY Styling Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-12-07 | Every year I love to do themed shoots for the holidays, and this year is no different! In this video Iβm shooting a DIY styled beauty image with my favorite color β¦ can you guess what it is! π If you follow my work you know I love creating monochromatic images with red being one of the colors you might see most often in my work. The concept for this shoot is making the model look like a gift with super simple DIY styling from things that I found around the studio and of course that red theme! A big part of this shoot is the Savage Seamless Primary Red background. This is my go-to red background.Tip: Donβt overnight the background! This can often result in the red looking a bit more orange. The light is super simple, with only a single light and white beauty dish with grid. The most important part here being the grid so that you can control the spill of light on the background. My Favorite Gray Seamless Background Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-11-23 | In todayβs video Iβm going to share my favorite color gray background and how to choose which color is right for you. If youβve ever perused the Savage Universal website or looked at their sample paper guide you may have noticed that they have more than dozen different versions of gray backgrounds, which begs the question, which one to get?There are two things to consider when asking this question:1. The Tonality: The lightness or darkness, do you want a lighter gray, almost white, or a dark rich gray, almost black.2. The Coolness The other thing to consider is the coolness, do you want the color to be more neutral or have a bit of warmth, closer to beige. So which background so I use?To be honest, I have a bunch! The color that I use most often is Fashion Gray. Itβs a little bit lighter and a tiny bit cooler but generally neutral. I use this a lot for my fashion editorials.When I want something more dramatic I usually go with Thunder Gray which is a bit darker. I also use TV Gray, which is a bit warmer. I use this gray if Iβm photographing a subject where I would want to have their skin tone appear a little bit warmer or their wearing a cream dress and I want to unify the tones of the background with the subject.So why would I go with something cooler for fashion editorials? I like the coolness of the background and being that skin tones are generally a bit warmer thereβs a little bit more pop and contrast. So if you could only get 1 gray background which would it be?Wellβ¦ ultimately it depends on what your needs are, but I know my choice would be Fashion Gray!π What's your favorite background? Pop Art Beauty Shoot Inspired by Roy Lichtenstein Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-11-09 | In today's Photo Deconstruction, I'm going to take you behind the scenes of a pop art beauty shoot inspired by Roy Lichtenstein. One of the places that I love to get inspiration is from other artists. I get inspired by photographers, but also painters and cinematographers and sculptors etc. This image was inspired by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein and taken during my Timeless intensive workshop with Chris Knight. In preparation for creating this image, I went through and I tried to distill a couple of the core ingredients that I would want to infuse into my work if it was meant to feel like Lichtenstein. So, first of all, I wanted to use really bold, maybe triadic colors. Red, yellow and blue. If you look at his work, those are colors that you see repeated over and over again. Nailing the look is important and required various styling elements. The first one was a yellow wig that we then styled in a vintage hairdo and painted. We also added a phone as a prop just to give the model something to do. From there we created a custom painted backdrop to have the model in front of, something really bold and graphic. Next up was the hard part, the makeup! Thankfully I have an incredible team at my disposable that did a wonderful job at recreating this iconic look. π‘LightingThe lighting was fairly simple for this shoot consisting of only 3 lights.You can see the BTS at 3:33.The main light is a beauty dish which was soft and flattering on the subject but also added a little pop.The second light is another beauty dish used to fill in the shadows with a grid. Finally, I added a bare bulb with 20 degree grid on the background. You could get away with just 2 lights here but the third light helped provide a bit of separation between the yellow hair and background. For the post processing I increased the contrast (due to haze being in the area from other sets going on at the time) and the saturation of various elements in Photoshop.Obviously it took a lot of elements to bring this image to life, the model, styling, hair, the makeup, expression, background, post processing etc, but it was truly fun to try to create something like this β almost like a comic book cell coming to life. π Iβd love to hear your thoughts on the final outcome. Faking Sunset Ambience on Location | Fashion Shoot βοΈ Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-10-26 | In this Photo Deconstruction Iβm going to take you behind the scenes of a fashion shoot where I create beautiful sunset ambiance, even though itβs a cloudy day! This image was taken on location as part of my 3 Day Fashion Intensive. We originally intended for some beautiful natural light, but once we arrived on location it turned out to be cloudy! So what to do??With a little thinking outside the box (or in this case outside the window lol) and a relatively simple 2 light setup, I was able to fake that gorgeous sunlight we were missing thanks to a large umbrella with diffusion and a bare bulb with a gel outside the window. An additional tool I used was a Black Pro Mist filter so that it would give off a highlight where the light was shining in from the window, emulating sunlight even more. Hereβs the straight out of camera: 4:52There wasnβt much to do in terms of post processing, other than boosting the contrast a bit from the light peering into the lens.I also made some minor retouches just to focus the eye back on the subject. Creating a Marilyn Monroe Inspired Fine Art Nude Photo Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-10-13 | Fine Art Nudes is one of the things I love most to photograph because there are no limits on your creativity. I can collaborate with my model to create something truly artistic and beautiful.The image shown here was taken during my in person Fine Art Nude workshop (π https://lindsayadler.photo/fan-workshop) and was inspired by Marilyn Monroe.While my lovely and talented Burlesque model Bryona isnβt blonde like Marilyn, weβre still channeling that vintage pin-up look, just brunette style! π‘LightingThe main light is here I one of my favorite modifiers (and not just because I co-designed it with Westcott lol) because of how it can create really hard crisp light. If you look at vintage photographs many times youβll notice they are using a hard light source. This is because they were using hot lights, specifically Fresnels which created very poppy, high contrast lighting. Since this is a rather concentrated light there were areas that were darker than I liked so I introduced a medium umbrella with diffusion as my fill. Lastly, I added a third light for the background that had a 20 degree grid just to create a little separation between the model and the background. Of course the set played a big role in the execution of this image. I purchased some red velvet curtains and used them as the backdrop as well as draping them over the couch for the model to sit on. I loved the result and the lighting straight out of camera, even with zero adjustments: 5:23π Post ProcessingFor post processing I darkened down the curtains a bit so that the model would pop a bit more and desaturated the image overall. For retouching, you can see that the biggest changes were to the background. What I wound up doing was grabbing a plate from another shot where I didnβt have those shadows hitting the background and added that in. Cover shoot with Winnie Harlow for Tmrw Magazine Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-09-28 | In this Photo Deconstruction I break down the cover shoot for Tmrw magazine featuring the incredibly talented model Winnie Harlow.The concept behind this cover shoot was to create a really warm look, as if the model was bathed in late day sunlight, but with a little bit of a vintage vibe. Let's take a look behind the scenes of the lighting and the stage for these images 1:59π‘LightingThe first thing I did for this 3 light setup was eliminate all of the ambient light in the studio so that I could create these slices of light without anything else interfering. The main light was the Westcott Optical Spot, which, of course, you guys know that I designed in conjunction with Westcott. I use this to create a beautiful hard light on her face. Now the main light here, I use the kit lens, which is great for head and shoulders and beauty shots.The second light was also an Optical Spot but this time with a 24 to 70mm lens. My goal for this image is I wanted a tight, slice of light on the subject's face and then a slice of light behind her so that she would be separated out from the background. The final strobe is a Zoom Reflector with a CTO (color temperature orange) gel that's giving me some of that warmth that I wanted for the shot. You'll notice there's some other things going on here as well. I also used Cinefoil to block the spread of light hitting the background and a flag to block the light hitting the ground right in front of the subject.So that gives you a breakdown of the behind the scenes. Let's go look at what was captured in camera versus what was achieved in post: 6:40.Youβll notice that I was getting that warmth that we envisioned, so I did a quick color grade as the images were coming into Capture One so everyone could get an idea of the final shot: 7:35For post production I majorly increased the contrast, darkened down the exposure, and warmed up the shot by adjusting the white balance and added more yellow to the highlights. So you can see I get really close to the cover shot, just through color grading. There wasnβt much additionally that needed to be adjusted in post, just some minor cleaning of the skin, adding a catchlight to the other eye and smoothing out the hair in the back of the head. Creating a Vintage Pin-up Style Art Nude Photo Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-09-15 | In today's Photo Deconstruction, I'm going to show you how I created an art nude image inspired by vintage pinup. People often ask me what inspires me. The short answer is everything! I really love getting inspiration from paintings or old Hollywood and even pinup photography. I often tie these elements into my own work in some capacity or another. The image shown here today was taken at my Fine Art Nude photography workshop (π https://lindsayadler.photo/fan-workshop)The concept for this image was to create something with a vintage feel. I wanted it to feel timeless, pin-up like and of course have a modern twist! When photographing fine art nudes the focus is typically all about the model and the human form. While I have many different exciting and creative setups at my workshops, this one was meant to be more simplistic and elegant. It also helps when your model has that pinup girl look! π‘Lighting:For the shot, I end up using four different strobes. I began by lighting the background which was Savage Universal Seamless Coral with two strobes on either side. The main light I chose my go-to modifier which is the Westcott Optical Spot. Using this modifier I was able to control exactly what part of the body would be illuminated. Since the main light focused on one area the rest of her body fell into dark shadow, so to fix that, I introduced a medium umbrella with diffusion on the right to fill in those shadows. π Post ProcessingThis is where we ended up with the shot: 4:25Now, some of the things that I'm analyzing that I don't like in this shot, I definitely don't like the highlight that I see on the background that is from the optical spot spilling on to it. I could have changed the angle of the optical spot, maybe move the subject further away, but I didn't so I knew that I'd have to fix that in post. I cleaned up a few other areas of the image, including some fraid hairs etc as well as desaturated everything a bit and warmed things up to try to emulate more of a vintage look. What I captured on camera is quite close, but we were able to achieve much more of that vintage look and that timeless vibe with my color grading and also the perfection of the retouching. Frida Kahlo Inspired Beauty Shoot Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-08-31 | In todayβs Photo Deconstruction Iβm going to show you how I create a Frida Kahlo inspired beauty shoot using dramatic lighting and gels. ----Frida Kahlo was a Mexican painter best known for her uncompromising and brilliantly colored self-portraits that deal with such themes as identity, the human body, and death. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frida_Kahlo----One of the places I love returning to for inspiration over and over again is the past. After all, itβs these great artists, painters, sculptures etc that have paved the way for our modern art. I love mixing the βoldβ and the new for a timeless feel to my work. In fact I have a workshop that focuses on this very theme called the Timeless workshop, taught along with Chris Knight. (For more info check out the workshop here π https://lindsayadler.photo/timeless).The image shown here in this breakdown is straight out of one of the looks that we create on set for attendees. The core elements that inspired me from Frida Kahloβs work were the elements of nature and color that I knew I wanted incorporate into my version.π‘LightingThis is a 5 light setup β and I know that when people hear that they might think that itβs overwhelming or overkill, but when I use that many lights each one has a specific purpose. I typically also build up my lights as I go along, without the intention of using lots of lights to begin with. The main light here is an Optical Spot which I used to create a slice of light on the subject's face. Now of course using this modifier doesnβt have anything to do with Frida Kahloβs work, but that is how I merge the old with the new to create my own style. Next up I used a large umbrella w/ diffusion + a magenta gel as my fill light to the right hand side of the frame. The reason behind the gel was to create more of a cohesive and analogous color scheme and tie everything together. Lights 3 and 4 are in the back as rim lights, both with CTO (color temperature orange) gels with barn doors to help control the spill of light. The color really pops when backlighting haze which is another thing that I added to the scene. The 5th light is hidden behind the subject and is a bare bulb with a magenta gel to give a nice gradient to the background. This is the shot straight out of camera: 6:54There wasnβt much that needed to be in done in post processing other than increasing the contrast and highlights a bit to help with the softness that the haze in a can created. Fashion Shoot featuring a DIY Seamless Paper Dress Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-08-17 | In this video Iβm going to show you how to think a bit outside the box and tickle your creativity by turning scraps of seamless paper into a dress! Like many of you, I shoot on seamless ALL the time, but itβs so heartbreaking when you have to cut some of it out and throw it away. Rather than waste those scraps my creative team turned them into something truly fabulous. I mean itβs PAPER, come on, how cool!?The outfit here is made out of 3 different sets of Soft Grey Savage Universal Seamless paper. My thought process for this fashion shoot is to focus on the texture and shape of the wardrobe and with that, positioning my light so that it rakes across the model and provides a little bit of sculpting on that piece. The one light provided beautiful light on the model but I felt it did need a bit more fill, so I introduced a v-flat to the shadow side of the modelβs face. Because I just have to go over the top sometimes (hehe) I decided to add a second strobe to the frame with an Optical Spot and the Search Light Gobo so that I could project a pattern on the background. Thrift Store Fashion Photoshoot Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-08-03 | In todayβs Photo Deconstruction Iβm going to show you how I use thrift store shopping and 2 strobes for an eye catching black and white portrait. -----While I love having fabulous wardrobe options for my shoots it isnβt always feasible or necessary. You can create beautiful images inspired by really simple clothing on a budget by picking up wardrobe and props from just about anywhere including a thrift shop, itβs all about using your imagination! To prove that point, the dress here was $6 and the hat was only $1. Obviously lighting and equipment are excluded but weβre specifically talking about styling. π‘ Lighting: The main light was a bare bulb with 20 degree grid, a hard light focused on the subject to control spill. The second light is a bare bulb turned all the way up and pointed at the seamless to blow it out completely. This is the straight out of camera raw file: 3:24.From the beginning I planned on this being an elegant and chic image, something bold and graphic, so for that I decided that turning the image to black and white was the best option. Immediately I knew I wanted to clean up some of the elements so that the image had cleaner lines, so some quick retouching later and I had a good starting point. In terms of processing I popped the contrast basically after turning it black and white. David Bowie Inspired Shoot using the Pantone Color of the Year - Very Peri Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-07-27 | In this Photo Deconstruction Iβm going to show you how I created a David Bowie inspired beauty image using gels, shutter drag, and the Pantone Color of the Year -- Very Peri----David Robert Jones, known professionally as David Bowie, was an English singer-songwriter and actor. A leading figure in the music industry, he is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Bowie----If you follow this channel you probably already know that every year I do a few shoots that are themed around the Pantone Color of the Year. I like doing this for a few reasons: β Having my images show up for the trending color of the yearβ Showing clients that I am up to date on trendsβ Giving myself a creative challenge!This shoot was inspired by my model's awesome hair/look which paved the way for the Bowie theme. This is a 4 light setup (1:30). The main light is a Zoom reflector with a purple gel with another zoom reflector lower to act as a fill. The 3rd strobe is a 1x4ft strip softbox with grid from above to help separate out the modelβs hair. Last but not least is a background light on a floor stand but only being used as a constant light and was used to aid in the shutter drag effect. Using a longer shutter speed I was able to create movement and specular highlights on the gems, just go make the image pop a bit more. Straight out of camera (7:18) was very close to the end result, there were just a few things I wanted to change to tighten up the image, but overall I was very pleased with the βin cameraβ effects.π Iβd love to hear your thoughts on the final outcome. Experimenting with Creative Studio Lighting Techniques Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-07-13 | The majority of the time I have a clear idea of the end result of my images, but on the flip side, I also like to experiment and let the ideas flow naturally on set. Thereβs nothing wrong with experimenting and evolving the shot, it doesnβt always have to come out as you expected, and thatβs the point. You canβt discover new techniques that work for you without experimenting! For this fashion shoot I wanted to focus on the wardrobe and ultimately I combined a variety of creative techniques including the use of gels, a filter, shutter drag and a bright colored seamless background.π‘Breaking it all down:The main light for this shoot is a large umbrella with diffusion + a blue gel to provide a kiss of color across the frame and match the Studio Blue background. 2:29The second light is used to highlight her wardrobe by backlighting it with a bare bulb. 3:10Because the backlight creates a lot of flare in the lens when the model was moving, I felt it was a great opportunity to add a Black Pro Mist Filter which makes the highlights glow even more and gives them a beautiful hazy effect. 4:37The third light is a 1/4ft strip softbox + green gel over on the left hand side of the scene from behind. The reason I added the green gel was to try to unify things a bit more with her jacket. 5:23Last but not least Iβm introducing a bit of shutter drag into the scene to just give the image a bit more creative flare. Using Complementary Color Gels to Create an Eye Catching Image Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-06-29 | In todayβs photo deconstruction Iβm going to show you how I use complementary gels and 4 lights to create an image that really pops.A lot of beginners starting out with gels just slap them on their lights and hope for the best, which generally leads to lack luster results. This is why itβs important to famliraize yourself with color theory and color harmony β which basically are a set of βrulesβ for how colors work together to create impact and mood in your photographs.There are many different color harmonies you can work, here I choose to use complementary colors. I wanted to play with warm and cool tones and create contrast that would make the subject pop.This image was taken during my Advanced Lighting Techniques workshop which teaches these techniques and many more. As mentioned above, this image was lit with 4 lights. The main light was a bare bulb with blue gel and 20 degree grid hitting the front of the set here. Light number 2 was a strip softbox from behind with a blue gel as a rim light.Next, I wanted to add a bit of warmth and contrast, so I had added a 3rd light with an orange gel and no modifier and pointed it directly on the white backdrop. The idea here was to give the illusion of a sunset and create a nice gradient on the background. The last light was directed at the subject from the left with another orange gel and 10 degree grid so that it looked like they were unified with the background. Post ProcessingStraight out of camera: 4:08Overall, the biggest issue straight out of camera (4:08) was that I needed to bring up a little bit of fill to the shadows. I also popped the clarity and last but not least, I just cleaned up a bit of areas in the image with retouching. I hope you can see the benefit of pre-planning your gel themed shoots by utilizing color theory. Everything here meshed well together and the end result was a high contrast image with a lot of pop. Creating a Dramatic Burlesque Style Image with 5 Lights Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-06-15 | In this Photo Deconstruction Iβm going to show you how I create a dramatic burlesque style image using 5 strobes. This image was taken during my in person Boudoir/Burlesque workshop that I host multiple times per year (https://lindsayadler.photo/boudoirworkshop).π‘LightingTo start, my main light is an Optical Spot -- which as the name suggests, lets me create a spotlight on the subject that mimics stage lighting.Iβm also using another Optical Spot with gobo in the far back left to cast a search light style pattern on the backdrop. The reason I opted to do this was simply because I wanted something dramatic in the background rather than just the plain backdrop. Next, lights 3 and 4 are 1x4β strip softboxes with grids to help accentuate the model and her gorgeous figure. My 5th and final light is a large umbrella with diffusion and blue gel to lift up the shadows and provide a kiss of color. Itβs really the multi light setup that gives this image that βOld Hollywoodβ look β of course in addition to the timeless look of the model and amazing wardrobe. πThis is what I ended up with: 4:25Straight out of camera: 5:30ποΈ Post ProcessingStraight out of camera the photo looked great. It didnβt really require that much post processing, but I wasnβt satisfied with the lack of blue in the shadows from the main light, so I decided to do some color grading in Capture One to create a uniform look. I also dramatically popped the highlights, increased the contrast, added clarity and desaturated the colors a bit.In terms of retouching, there were just some tiny areas that I cleaned up.π Final ThoughtsA 5 light setup is always going to be intimidating. To be fair, many images can be accomplished with less lighting, but for this photo, every single light had its purpose. I approach lighting by figuring out what each light will add to the scene. I donβt always dive head first in with the most amount of lights possible. Using a Top of the Line Fan for a Hair Photoshoot Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-06-08 | For those of you that love photographing hair, Iβve got a treat for you today as I review what you can get from using a top of the line hair fan! You might be thinking to yourselfβ¦why on earth would I need or want a $2,000 hair fan!? Well, just like on movie sets, there are pieces of equipment that are designed to do a specific job, they are the βbest of the bestβ and created for a purpose, so I figured, why not try this one out! Of course, just like with any piece of equipment there are alternatives. You can use a leaf blower, floor dryer, inexpensive house fan, and even cardboard/foam core while an assistant flaps away to create wind. So after much hounding by my hair stylist, I finally gave in to try the Reel EFX RE Fan 2 Turbo Bladed Wind Machine for Special Effects (thatβs a mouthful lol).Starting right off the bat, I love how you can adjust the fan up and down. It allows me to really focus where the air flow will be. The next great feature is the variability for the power of the fan as well as the cool βburst modeβ that can just be a brief second crazy wind. Lastly, in addition to the actual strength of the air flow, you can change the beam, or the concentration of the air which is really cool. You can go from 10 degrees to 45 degrees. So whatβs the verdict? For me, I LOVE this. Is it a bit on the expensive side? Absolutely. But itβs a tool like anything else and if it helps you do something more efficiently and with less stress than to ME itβs worth it, especially for commercial shoots where consistent results are important.You can obviously achieve the same results without expensive equipment, but that isn't the point here, it's about what works for you and if you feel the need justifies the cost. Now onto the shoot!I opted for a Savage Seamless Pecan background which is a warm but somewhat desaturated brown. The idea here is that the model has this beautiful warm skin tone and with her beautiful hair, it would all matching tones, warm and fresh. Since I wanted a fresh look, I opted for higher key clamshell lighting with a large umbrella and a 1x4β strip softbox. The last light is a bare bulb on the background to give it a bit of pop and gradient of light. Fashion Shoot | Layering Seamless Backgrounds to Create a Graphic Effect Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-06-01 | Seamless backgrounds are probably one of my most used items in the studio. I love using them to create supersaturated scenes either with a specific color or with a gray background that can soak up gels and create interesting effects, however sometimes it can get a bit repetitive. So what can you do about that?In this case, I thought, maybe I could layer multiple seamless backgrounds together to create more of a set and graphic effect, something out of the ordinary. The execution was pretty simple. I setup a Savage Universal Plum background and then put up a Canary Yellow one across that to create an interesting set piece that also complimented the model's outfit and matched the clothing to the environment. One of the things to keep in mind while building a set or planning a photoshoot is that there is no βrightβ answer, it all depends on the intention. So when youβre trying to think outside the box and create something a bit different, let those ideas flow and experiment! For the light we decided because of the vertical seamless across the background, it might be interesting to contrast that by creating a vertical beam of light down the middle for the model to step in. To create this effect I used an Optical Spot since it gives me ultimate control for creating tight pockets of light. I also added a large umbrella with diffusion to help lift the shadows a bit. The end result was something different and not the typical use of a backdrop. On Location Fashion Photography at the Baccarat Hotel Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-05-25 | If you're familiar with my work you know that I mostly shoot in the studio β not only because I love studio lighting but also because sometimes the conditions on the East Coast arenβt always as favorable! Over the winter I was invited to photograph at the Baccarat hotel for a joint collaboration between the hotel and fashion designer, The Danes.The challenge was to create images that satisfy both clients β so I had to focus on the dress as well as bring attention to the space. Another challenge to on location photography is that you sometimes have to move quickly, like very quickly. Since where we were photographing the model was an active bar/restaurant I had to get the lighting setup and everything ready to go before the model even stepped into frame. For this shoot I used 3 strobes, but you could get away with less. Each light has its purpose so thatβs the fun challenge when you do on location photography, you will have to adapt to the situation. The main light on the subject was an Optical Spot which was used to create contrast and pop the subject out of the background a bit. You donβt have to use a hard light modifier for something like this, but I decided to just because of the quality of light it produces and wanted a bit of "old hollywood" vibe.Then, lights 2 and 3 were both bare bulb strobes with CTO gels which helped warm up the entire space and act as a rim and hair light on the subject so they wouldnβt blend into the background as much. There was also a window behind me which was providing indirect light with a βcoolβ tone that helped balance things out. Ultimately, I tried to take some of the color that was already in the scene and enhance it with the strobes. In post production I color graded the image to give it more of a cinematic look and removed some of the unwanted elements in the scene.You can see how all of the elements come together, the lighting, environment, camera settings, color grading and retouch. Using a Softbox as Rim Lights to create an Eye Catching Image Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-05-18 | In todayβs Photo Deconstruction I break down how to create an iconic looking image using 2 lights and a softbox in an unusual way. For this shoot my goal was to create something graphic, iconic and colorful. I love experimenting in the studio and found this technique to be something I try time and time again. This image was created with only 2 strobes which at first glance can be a little confusing! One might guess 3, or even 4 lights. To give the illusion of extra rim lights I'm using a softbox which when positioned close to the subject creates the bits of color that wrap around the subject. The trick here is really using the flag in between the softbox and the model. Without the flag, youβd have a lot of light splashing back into the camera and a completely different look. You could totally just stop here and have the model in silhouette, but for me, I wanted to play around a bit with complimentary colors and add a gel to the main light. For post processing I had to make some adjustments, even though straight out of camera was very close to the end results.Since weβre shooting directly into the softbox there is going to be some lens flare and we lose a little bit of contrast. So to fix this, I just increased the contrast in camera raw, upped the clarity a bit and darkened down the shadows. I also adjusted the color grade after playing around a bit. Beyond that, I just extended the frame and cleaned up the edges of the hair a bit, which takes us to the final shot. Make Your Fashion Images Pop Using a Colorful Background Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-05-12 | Generally when I approach a fashion shoot I donβt always have a specific direction in mind. Sometimes things change on a dime based on the outfit, makeup, styling etc. Thatβs not to say I donβt have a vision for the outcome but I let the creative process unfold naturally for the best results. After seeing the colorful dress selected for the model I decided to use that to inform all of our other creative decisions and match the colors of the dress with both the lighting and the background. When choosing a background, I go to color theory. Do I want to go for complimentary colors or contrast, or a similar hue. In this instance, and for the overall direction of the shoot, I decided to go with a bright orangey background from Savage Seamless (actual name is Tangelo #82 β great great color). I now have the orange from the modelβs dressed covered, but that doesnβt really showcase the pink/magentas that are also in their dress. That I added with two rim lights into the scene with a pink gel. π‘ LightingI usually start my lighting off light by light and build the scene as I go along since each one may have a specific purpose. The main light here is a bare bulb with a Magnum reflector, which is one of my favorite hard light modifiers. I wanted to emulate the feeling of sunlight on the subject so this light was perfect for that as it casts a hard light like the sun, but still is flattering on the skin. I then added two small white umbrellas on both sides of the model from high and behind with a pink gel to add a pop of color. Lastly, I added one of my favorite tools to use which is a Black Pro Mist filter that will make the highlights in the image come to life even more. Now all that is left is to shoot! This was was a relatively straightforwad 3 light setup that mostly was directed by the colors in the scene. Creating a Burlesque Stage inspired Photoshoot in the Studio Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-05-04 | In this Photo Deconstruction I'm going to take you behind the scenes of one of my Burlesque photo shoots and show you how I recreate the look of stage lighting in the studio. I love shooting Burlesque, it's dramatic, incorporates beautiful lighting and oh my gersh, the outfits! My heart swoons. πThe concept of this image was as if the model was coming out from behind the curtains on stage greeting the audience and getting ready for a show. π‘ LightingSince I wanted to emulate the harsh lights of a stage, I opted for a bare bulb with 20 degree grid as the main light pointing to the model's face. The second light is exactly the same but behind the subject to help pop her out of the background as a rim light and provide a bit more theatricality. The next light acting as a fill was a large umbrella with diffusion. Last but not least, is a medium umbrella with diffusion and red gel off to the right used to emphasize the model more and just add a bit of color.Here's the straight out of camera: 4:46.I think the image as is would totally be usable without any processing but because the concept was meant to have a bit of a vintage feel to it, I did some extra post processing in Alien Skin Exposure to play with some film presets, and VoilΓ ! Creating a Fashion Shoot with RGB LED Light Tubes Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-04-27 | In todayβs Photo Deconstruction Iβll take you behind the scenes of a shoot featuring RGB light tubes. If you follow my work you already know that color is an important part of it, whether itβs used in the clothing, makeup, environment, or lighting. I usually do this with gels, but lately Iβve been falling in love with RGB constant light tubes. The ones I use specifically are from Nanlite and are full RGB LED. I love using these lights because of their versatility. To begin with, they're relatively small and unobtrusive so they can be stored easily and travel well. Second, I have a full range of adjustable colors at my fingertips with no fumbling around taking down a light, dismantling the modifier and trying to locate a gel color I might not have. Last but not least, because of the 'quality' of light they produce which is very cinematic in my opinion.Another reason I really love these lights is because of how bright they are. I donβt necessarily need to shoot wide open or have a very slow shutter speed. What you see is what you get. I crafted this shoot around the light tubes, knowing that I wanted something dramatic and that would emphasize the colors of course. This lead me to the selection of the dress and how I intended to light the model. Now to the lighting. This is a rather complex 5 light setup but each light has a purpose. (BTS: 1:34)Starting with the background light -- a Nanlite Forza 500 with Fresnel which is used to focus the beam of light coming from behind. Youβll also notice the smoke in the scene which was courtesy of my trusty haze machine. The haze machine produces a finer particle which helps to show more of a physical direction of the light. This combo really gave the image that cinematic look I was after. Lights 2 & 3 were back and behind the subject dialed in to be Cyan and give the model a nice rim and over head light. Lights 4 & 5 are in front of the model to the left and right using blue and purple. The end result straight out of camera (6:31) was pretty much the same as the final image, I was really happy with how things came out but it lacked a bit of contrast due to the haze. Creating a Dramatic Portrait with Checkerboard Lighting Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-04-21 | In todayβs Photo Deconstruction I show you how I use a single umbrella and Checkerboard lighting to create a dramatic male portrait.First of all, what is Checkerboard lighting?Checkerboard Lighting (as it pertains to portraits) is a common photography term used to describe when a subject has a highlight side of the face against the shadow side of the background, and the shadow side of the face against the highlight side of the background. Whew, that was a mouthful lol. Basically itβs black, white, black white, hence checkerboard! For this portrait I opted to go with a large umbrella with diffusion as I wanted soft, beautiful light raking across the subject. If you donβt have a large umbrella, you could also use a 3x4β softbox or Octabox for similar results. Alternatively, you don't have to use a soft light source to achieve checkerboard lighting either, you can use a hard light source, bare bulb , beauty dish etc. As for the position of the light, I feathered it so that very little was hitting the background which would help with that checkerboard effect. I found that the background wasnβt dark enough and the subject was blending into it so I had to introduce a black v-flat to help flag some of that light from hitting the background.Here is straight out of camera: (3:39)For post processing I increased the clarify and contrast a bit, desaturated the image and added some coolness to the shadows for the color version: 5:09Ultimately, I decided to change the image to black and white to achieve a more dramatic and timeless looking portrait. 5:44There's really no rule that says your image has to be color or black and white (especially as it pertains to checkerboard lighting) itβs really up to you and what youβre looking to achieve. I just felt that the black and white version worked better.If you notice too, the subject never blends into the background, so even though thereβs a lot of darker tones going on here, the checkerboard lighting helps separate the subject from the background. Using Mylar for a Creative in Camera Lighting Technique Lindsay Adler Photography 2022-04-13 | β Profoto Remote: adorama.rfvk.net/W3o5GIn todayβs photo deconstruction I break down two images that use Mylar and 1-3 lights for a super creative in-camera technique! If you follow my work you know that I love doing as much in camera as possible. Iβm not one for doing composites in Photoshop, I like the challenge of actually achieving this IRL. I find that I can control things a bit better doing it live and in person which is why Iβm always on the search for new creative in camera techniques. I recently came across a photo that inspired me to try my hand at a technique using Mylar to emulate water. I have to say this was very cool to play with! ----β What is Mylar?Mylar is the brand name for a special type of stretched polyester film. You'll often find this in a balloon for example. ----The first of these two images was shot with 1 single hard light source called a Fresnel. 1:28 (straight out of camera).----β What is a fresnel A Fresnel lens (pronounced frΙΛnΙl or fruh-nel) is a type of composite compact lens developed by the French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788β1827) for use in lighthouses. The Fresnel is a soft-edged spotlight that offers more control over the angle of the beam than a flood light. Often used in old Hollywood Lighting as well. ----You could also try this technique with a bare bulb and other hard light modifiers such as an optical spot.For the first shot the Mylar acted like a giant reflector and helped distribute the light, however I still needed a bit more light on the modelβs face in the end. π Final image: 3:44For post processing I cleaned up a few things such as the seam on the background where it met the floor, lowered the modelβs shoulders, desaturated the image and added some light to the modelβs face with a curves adjustment layer.β Image 2The next version of this setup I had to play with color and gels of course. I used 3 lights with the Fresnel in the exact same place. I then added a large umbrella with diffusion and gel behind the subject to light the background and back of their head as well as a medium umbrella with diffusion and gel in the foreground.I also used a star filter on this image that would give me specular highlights.This image was take during my Advanced Studio Lighting Workshop (see below for a link or in the video).π You can see the straight out of camera here: 8:02For the post processing on this image I cooled down the white balance, desaturated it, and did some additional retouching similar to the first shot.
