If you record, mix, or produce vocals in any way then this video is a MUST watch for you. Vocals fight for space in your song with anything else in the midrange. Things like instruments, synths, top basses - all kinds of stuff. This is called masking.
It's super important for your vocal to be clear so listeners can hear the lyrics and vibe with your message. Old-school techniques like using a compressor to duck the midrange instruments, or boosting the vocal to "cut through" the mix always result in undesirable side-effects that damage your carefully constructed mix.

I stopped using Waves plugins a long time ago for 3 very important reasons that I want to share with you. They have nothing to do with the Waves subscription debacle, by the way, my decision pre-dates that.
Waves is a financially driven company that has a profit-first not customer-first or quality-first mantra. Do not support them. Collectively we can make an example out of them that will hopefully prevent other companies from doing the same. It’s been amazing to see all of you rallying hard against this. Keep it up.
Instead support the thousands of amazing, hard-working, customer and quality centric companies out there and vote with your dollars.

Do you ever feel like, at times, you lose touch with your passion, ambition and drive to go after your art? Maybe you’re lacking inspiration to show up and do the work that needs to be done? If that ever happens then I want to share something I’ve found extremely useful to be able to blast through that roadblock.
I recently published a video on powerful techniques you can use when you’re feeling overwhelmed. If you want to view that, see it here: youtu.be/pY5EgEGmMNI
In this video I draw on the book Start with Why from @SimonSinek You can watch his TED Talk on the same subject here: youtube.com/watch?v=u4ZoJKF_VuA or learn more about his book here: simonsinek.com/books/start-with-why/.
In the book, he discusses 2 bricklayers both working on a large project. When asked what he does, the first bricklayer replies, “I lay bricks; I’m a bricklayer.” The second bricklayer says, “I’m building a cathedral.” There’s a significant mindset difference between the two people.
Which one do you think is likely to be more driven and passionate about their craft, and able to persevere through all the hard work and countless hours required to complete the project? Having a sense of connection with the bigger picture - your why - is a powerful source of creative fuel.
If you’re feeling stuck, uninspired, or finding difficulty showing up and doing the work, then this technique can be very helpful. If you zoom way out from the granular, bite-sized stuff and say what is the reason why I started doing this? Where am I going with this? What’s my destination? Where in my wildest dreams and visions will I be when I become successful in this pursuit?
If you connect with that, and hold it in your mind when you’re working, that can provide the sense of motivation that will get you to continue doing the day in, day out work that’s necessary to realize your grander vision.

Neumann KH420: bit.ly/neumann-kh420
Focal Trio 11 Be: bit.ly/focal-trio-11-be
@GeorgNeumannGmbH
I’ve just moved into a new space and I’ll be building a fresh music studio from the ground up. This gives me the chance to change a lot of things I didn’t like about my previous studio, primarily the monitoring system.
My studio has a hard front wall with the monitors flush mounted. This is really the gold standard when it comes to acoustics, but it limits the style of monitors you can use. You have to use front-ported designs that have squared corners to simplify the mounting process.
I’ve never been happy with the low end in my past rooms, which was coming from a Genelec 7060 BPM sub. Despite a ton of acoustic tuning and being in a great room, it lacked bass definition and clarity. The bass was always muddy and indistinct to my ears.
Now I’ve decided to opt for larger 3-way mains that have enough bass extension that I don’t need a sub. I’ve narrowed my search down to the Neumann KH420 and the Focal Trio 11 Be. For the past 2 months I’ve had both sets on loan from Long & McQuade, our local retailer, and I’ve had a chance to listen to them extensively.
In this video I’ll reveal which ones I chose and why. Smash that play button and join me to learn which monitor won the day!

Burning in is the concept that a new loudspeaker, fresh from the factory, needs a period of running it before performance is optimal and that the sound of a speaker changes over time. By running the speaker over a period of time, some people say that you’re going to get it into a stabilized or optimal state.
I’m always reviewing and testing studio monitors so this is quite relevant for me and I wanted to dig a little deeper into this. Right now I’m testing the Neumann KH420 and the Focal Trio 11 Be monitors. It’s quite interesting because different people recommend totally different things. We’re going to peel back the onion, dig back into where this came from, what’s involved, and figure out if it’s relevant for you.
Let us think about what parts can change their properties permanently in an active loudspeaker:
▪ Electronics – There is insignificant change with use over time. Permanent changes are usually the result of poor parts selection in design, early parts failure (bathtub curve), or user abuse. Some temporary change over short periods is seen due to heating up of components, but this resets when the electronics cools down. Active loudspeakers do not suffer significantly from these temporary changes as the sensitive crossover parts are positioned before the amplifier and so do not heat up much.
▪ Cabinet Mechanics – If this changes it is not well built!
▪ Drivers – The moving mass cannot change otherwise it means that something has fallen off, or
some extra mass has been added. The self-damping should not change significantly otherwise it would mean that the cone material is falling apart. These two situations would only happen in the case of loudspeaker abuse or accidental damage. The suspension and surround can change their stiffness over time; however a good design should be robust to these minor changes. Even quite large, and highly unlikely in a correctly working loudspeaker, changes (doubling or halving the stiffness) will alter the overall loudspeaker performance by less than 1 dB in the low-frequency region only. Temporary changes are seen due to the voice coil heating up (thermal compression), but this resets when it cools down.
▪ Psychoacoustics – A human's auditory memory is VERY short, less than five seconds. This fact is well-known in the academic community, so one sees controlled ABX type listening tests with fast switchers to avoid the listeners forgetting what they just heard. Typically when burning-in loudspeakers a user listens to the loudspeaker for a while, does the burn-in over a long time period (say 24 hours, or even up to a week), then listens again. Having done this they are naturally inclined to hear a difference.

I’m a full-time audio engineer and a sponsored artist with Audeze. I’ve had a chance to use many of the headphones in their lineup. In this video, I’m going to compare and contrast between the two variants of the LCD-X platform: The open back variants, the LCD-X, and the closed back variants, the LCD-XC. I’m going to share my perspective as an audio engineer.
These headphones are very popular with both audio engineers and audiophiles - or hi-fi listeners - but what I look for in headphones as an engineer is very different. I’m looking for headphones that are as true as possible; headphones that don’t flatter or accentuate certain aspects of the spectrum, or certain frequencies, because that can impair my judgement and perspective and could get me to over-mix or under-mix certain aspects of the song.
An audiophile is typically looking to have headphones that sound as good as possible as an end listener, so they’re two very different perspectives.
The LCD-X and LCD-XC headphones have emerged as some of the top picks of music producers, audio engineers, and audiophiles alike. But with both closed and and open-back versions, which one is right for you? This video compares and contrasts between the two styles to equip you with all the info you need to choose the perfect option for your situation.
My perspective is based on about a year of full-time work with these headphones; I’ve had been using them day in and day out. I’ve had a chance to do lots of critical listening, back and forth with them, and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned with you, so let’s hop in!

When you’re doing anything worthwhile - like engaging with your life’s purpose or creating art - you’ll invariably run up again some challenges. We all have a capacity to “get in our own way” when we’re doing something significant; something central to our being.
Something that comes up a lot for artists, creatives, entrepreneurs, and people who are generally pursuing their dreams, is overwhelm. It can manifest as not knowing where to start, or in leaving a graveyard of unfinished projects behind you while constantly starting new ones. It can lead to low-level chronic stress, or overt anxiety.
Overwhelm is typically triggered by letting our attention drift to the future, to all the things we feel we must do, and to all the risks and uncertainties. While thinking ahead for the purposes of planning is necessary, creatives must cultivate the ability to focus on the here and now. We must be able to immerse ourselves in our art and let thoughts of the future and past melt away.
Sounds simple right? Easy peasy! In real-world application though, it can require a lot of mental fortitude and discipline. It takes tools, practice, and time to master.
This is the inner game of being a creative. The ability to transcend overwhelm is one of the reasons why some excel and others stay stuck.
In this video, I’ll share 3 powerful techniques I’ve learned that will help along your artistic journey. Tune in and enjoy!

In this video, Ableton Certified Trainer Ian Gallagher shows how to use Mid-side EQ (aka MSEQ) to add width to your song during the mastering process. He starts by showing a typical example of what not to do: i.e. throw Utility on your master channel and turn the knob to the right. This approach can be adequate sometimes, but it can quickly sound dreadful. Utility is too blunt a tool for mastering.
Instead, you can use Live's built-in EQ Eight by switching it to Mid-Side mode and then adding/subtracting frequencies. This technique is a much more tasteful and sophisticated approach since it allows you to be very precise.
Using bells, shelves, and high/low-pass filters (as well as your ears), you can widen or narrow your mix precisely to your song's requirements. Mid-side EQ is how most professional mastering engineers give songs an extra sonic polish, and it's a method you'll surely want to add to your skillset.
And if you don't use Ableton Live, Ian also shows how you can use a freeware EQ plugin (TDR's NOVA) to get very similar results.

Processing vocals is one of the most challenging aspects of modern music production. Since vocals are highly dynamic, harmonically rich, and intensely human (humans aren't machines), taming them takes patience and experience. Fitting them into a mix is often a daunting task.
A couple of years ago, Ableton Certified Trainer Ian Gallagher made a popular video showing some tried-and-true methods for processing vocals using only Ableton's built-in effects. While Warp Academy still stands by those techniques, we wanted to update things a bit and reignite the conversation around vocal processing. In particular, many people have asked us to explain how to use popular 3rd party plug-ins, and we were happy to oblige.
Of course, we can't cover all the 3rd party plug-ins suitable for processing vocals (at least not in one video). So in this video, Ian takes a deep dive into some of his current favorites, revealing his go-to tips, tricks, and general recommendations when using FabFilter and Izotope plug-ins.
Ian's overall philosophy is simple: do whatever it takes to make the vocals sound awesome, whether it takes 1 plug-in or 50. Toward that goal, he uses a combination of multiple EQs, dynamic EQ, vintage EQ, compression, harmonic exciting, limiting, reverb, stereo imaging, and de-essing.
He covers basic ideas like making a vocal less "stuffy," but also surprising new-school approaches such as using FabFilter's powerful dynamic EQ and Spectrum Grab features. The result is a center-stage, emotionally-engaging, and fully modern-sounding vocal. Of course, every vocalist is unique, but the techniques shown here are guaranteed to level-up your vocal game.
If you don't own the plug-ins used in this video (i.e., from both FabFilter and Izotope), you can find them over in the Warp Academy Store (warpacademy.com/software/).

Ableton Live 11 has just been announced and is currently in public beta ableton.com/en/beta. Among the long list of new goodies in Live 11 are some changes that can significantly impact your production workflow. In this video, Ableton Certified Trainer Ian Gallagher covers the recent additions of Templates and Grooves folders in the Browser, Multiclip Editing, and Linking tracks. All things that can make your music-making experience easier and more inspiring!
A good workflow makes good music. At Warp Academy, we believe in building smart strategies as musicians and producers to maximize your time and creative energy. With so many distractions in our world nowadays, it's easier than ever to get bogged down in music production's technical side. But a good workflow saves you time — and more time means more creative energy and better music. Who doesn't want to make better music, right?
Like producing with heart? Templates allow you to start creating with a palette of your favorite instruments and effects so that you can jump right to the good stuff. Templates enable you to focus on what's great musically, not what's technically correct.
Step up your rhythm game! Grooves have been around for a long time in Ableton Live and are like instant inspiration. But did you know about them? Well, now they have a nice folder in the Browser that you can't miss! Drag Grooves onto your clips to instantly transform your music in shocking ways!
Multiclip Editing in Live 11 also just got better. The new Focus button ensures that you can't mess up other clips when editing MIDI (a common issue). And you can adjust the loop length of multiple clips at the same time, which is badass.
Finally, you can now Link tracks in Live 11. Linking tracks means that when you edit one clip, you've instantly edited all the other ones too. This is fantastic news for vocal production or audio recordings that used multiple microphones. You can Link MIDI tracks also! Unless you enjoy endless hours of editing, you don't want to miss learning about this feature.

Ableton Live 11 is coming out soon! Among all the new features and updates are 3 stunning new audio effects. In this video, Ableton Certified Trainer Ian Gallagher will show these devices in action and let you hear the incredible sounds they can create.
Hybrid Reverb is not just any reverb. It delivers the best of both worlds, letting you blend between convolution and algorithmic reverb styles however you wish. It includes vintage reverb emulations, feedback, pre-delay in musical values, a Mono button for the low-end, and a built-in EQ. Long story short, Live finally has a world-class, highly flexible reverb in its library.
Spectral Resonator is a unique sound design tool, capable of almost anything. This beast takes audio and breaks it into partials, which you can then stretch, shift, blur, and filter to achieve some mind-blowing new sounds. Watch how Ian transforms a raw sawtooth patch into a soft and dreamy instrument. The possibilities with this new device are indeed endless... it's a sound-mangler's delight.
And finally, there's the new Spectral Time, which is similar to Spectral Resonator, but at the same time quite distinct. This fresh audio effect slices sound into partials and treats them a dose of frequency-based delay. The results range from jarring to blissed-out Zen garden lushness. Watch how Ian uses Spectral Time to transform a tired trap riser into something novel. You just have to hear Spectral Time for yourself.
Ian has put these 3 effects into 3 Instrument Racks, which you can download with the link above. These Racks take advantage of Racks' tremendous new capabilities in Live 11: you can now customize the number of Macros you want to use, randomize Macros for happy accidents, and save Macro configurations within the Rack, like presets. You can download these instruments and use them in Live 11 whenever you get your hands on the software!

You've poured your heart and soul into your latest musical masterpiece; now, it's time for the last crucial step. Mastering! Preparing yourself by listening to a professionally mastered album, you wonder, "What processing will help me match the tonal balance of this album. And, how can I reign in my muddy low-end? How do I even start!?" Well, before you give in to despair or waste precious hours guessing at which effects to choose, take Ozone 9 for a free test-drive. From an educator's perspective, Ozone boasts several features that set it apart for aspiring mastering engineers of any proficiency.
Historically, Ozone has been an established tool for professional and budget studios alike for nearly two decades. However, the latest release (Ozone 9) showcases refinement to its interface that simplifies the process for the entry-level user without sacrificing the precision demanded by any seasoned veteran. During the first half of today's video, I explain how Master Assistant provides a rough starting point within a few moments and what to learn from the recommendations it gives without becoming too dependent on algorithms to solve your mixing/mastering conundrums.
Similarly, every new feature added to this version follows this same theme with an interface redesigned to facilitate simplicity. (And we can finally resize the plugin window!!) Complex tasks take moments to tackle! Now, you can turn up an entire drum-kit with the only fader of the Master Rebalance module. Or, capture and apply the sonic profile of a reference-track to your song using two buttons and sliders. Or, use Low End Focus to banish the low-frequency mud from your track with only four sliders and a mode selector. During the second half of this video, I walk you through all three of these new tools and drop several tips on how to best achieve any desired result.

3:14 Manual alignment using time-stretching (warping)
8:21 Automatic alignment example with female vocals in a future bass tune
14:32 Using VocALign on male rap vocals
17:09 Using VocALign on instruments with a tenor saxophone
In this tutorial we’re going to talk about aligning vocals and instruments. In modern production it’s really common to stack multiple parts to layer and thicken vocals and instruments. It's essential to get a super tight sync between the various vocal or instrument parts for a professional sound.
You might have a vocal stack with a lead, doubles, harmonies, octave parts, whisper tracks and more. Manually aligning all of them with time stretching or warping can be done, but it’s incredibly time-consuming and tedious. It eats up hours, or even days, of precious studio time.
A plugin from Synchro Arts called Vocalign Pro 4 can do this in seconds. In this video we’ll cover how to do manual alignment with time stretching, and then show how to use Vocalign Pro to do this automatically. We’ll use 3 distinct examples to show how the process works using a female vocal stack in a future bass tune, male rap vocals in a future hip hop tune, and even on tenor saxophone to show how it works on an acoustic instrument.

-Audio repair basics
-How to fix badly recorded audio
-How to remove reverb & room reflections
-How to remove background noise
-How to remove clipping (aka de-clipping)
-How to remove plosives
-How to remove sibilance (aka de-essing)
-How to compress the vocal to create an even sound
Vocal processing and audio repair are two of the most INSANELY difficult things to do in the field of music and post-production. Most engineers (myself included) DREAD having to deal with badly recorded audio, so we're always on the hunt for tools do this better and faster. Today I'm amped to show you some amazing new plugins that'll absolutely FLOOR you with what they can do.
Vocal Processing, Made Easy.
Transform your Audio with These "One Knob" FX
These effects were originally designed with podcasters in mind, who needed easy-to-use tools to sweeten up their audio with minimal fuss. Each plugin does one thing - really freakin' well - with the turn of a giant, single knob.
Was your audio recorded in a massive gymnasium? No probs if you've got Reverb Remover. Did someone blast the AC in the background? No sweat! (sorry, terrible pun...) Just dial in some Noise Remover. Gone, faster than your in-laws then it's time to do the dishes.
The Accusonus plugins are so good, they've been used on Game of Thrones and licensed by Adobe. Come see what all the commotion is about in our full tutorial video, where BigJerr uses the ERA bundle to clean up some seriously TRASHED audio. You won't believe your ears.
