Abstract: Global South countries, as well as some peripheral countries within the Global North itself, are economically strangled by massive financial debts granted by international financial institutions under the control of the wealthiest Global North countries, such as the IMF, the World Bank, the Paris Club, etc. Financial strangulation translates into political strangulation for the benefit of the interests of the developed countries that control these organizations and their companies, employing well-known mechanisms of debt-trap diplomacy to deepen the neocolonial plundering of the natural resources of the subjugated countries. In many cases, these are also odious debts, obtained illegally and / or through corruption, oftentimes unconstitutionally, with de facto governments, and / or in violation of the statutes of the credit organizations themselves.
During the G-7 summit that took place in Germany from June 26th to 28th, many movements and groups exposed their bluff through multiple global mass actions, where thousands workers and climate activists joined forces on the streets to demand the cancellation of the debt of the Global South.
From October 10th (IMF & World Bank annual summit) through COP27 (November 8th) the streets will be taken again by the people who are asking for an unconditional cancellation of debt.
Why do we need debt cancellation? What is the role of debt cancellation for Global South in order to take climate action? This talk will provide answers to these questions.
Bio: Scarlett is a full-time climate activist since 2019 and has worked on various global call-to-action mobilizations and international campaigns. Her work is focused on unifying the voice of the people and bringing everyone together to create a better, more equitable future. She believes that there is no climate justice without social justice and based on her experience proper climate action can not be taken in countries and communities where social justice is not centered.
