Scientists using an underwater camera to search for seafloor life around the Hunga Volcano in Tonga have been met by several ‘ink attacks’ by deep-sea squid! These squirting squid, along with solitary sea cucumbers and giant 1-metre-tall hydroids – sprouting from the sediment like underwater sunflowers – were some of the only visible signs of seafloor life spotted around the volcano.
These surveys using our Deep Towed Camera were part of a 54-day research voyage to Tonga led by the University of Tasmania aboard CSIRO research vessel (RV) Investigator. The multinational voyage aimed to study the aftermath of the 2022 eruption of the Hunga Volcano, which was the most powerful eruption on the planet in over 100 years.
