Oppressed by Spain and the General Weyler
And the U.S., they saw this mess
As a chance to expand and spread business
Hearst and Pulitzer spread war fever with Yellow Journalism
Remember the Maine, to Hell with Spain, we want war
Though there’s no evidence to pin blame on Spain for
The explosion, the public is still in uproar
Calling for
The Spanish-American War
Dewey beats Spain at Manilla Bay
Once again a Spanish Armada is filleted
Because wooden ships are no match for our navy
The crowd roars
It’s a splendid little war

You want a thrill, take San Juan Hill
After Buffalo Soldiers, get credit still
The war was quick, and Spain got licked
Less of our troops died fighting than getting sick
Cuba, Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico

We don’t keep Cuba ‘cause of the Teller Amendment
But can intervene for peace without their consent
And have Guantanamo Bay for imprisonment

No self-rule goes to Puerto Rico
A territory, they get citizenship though
