Spanish volunteer fighter pilots in German Bf 109s, battling over the frozen skies of the Eastern Front. In this video, we continue the story of the First Spanish Blue Squadron (Escuadrilla Azul) in 1941.
We follow Major Ángel Salas Larrazábal and his men as they escort bombers, strafe Soviet airfields, clash with DB-3s, MiG-3s, I-16s and Il-2 Sturmoviks, and struggle with brutal weather, constant moves between frontline airfields, and the growing Soviet counter-offensive.
This is the second part of the series on the Spanish “Blue Squadrons” (Escuadrillas Azules) on the Eastern Front in WW2. If you haven’t seen Part 1 yet, make sure to watch it first for the background on how these men ended up flying for the Luftwaffe and how their combat tour began.
