SpaceX’s Starship Ocean Plan — Why Did They Abandon It, and Why Now?
SpaceX already tried to put Starship at sea.
Years ago, the company bought two enormous former oil rigs, renamed them Phobos and Deimos, and began exploring the idea of turning them into floating Starship spaceports. Then the project stopped. The rigs were sold, and SpaceX said they were not the right platforms.
So why is the ocean back in the conversation now?
Because Starship is no longer the same vehicle it was in 2020. SpaceX has spent years learning how to launch it, survive reentry, recover Super Heavy, and build the infrastructure needed for reuse. Now the company is facing a much bigger problem: how do you operate Starship at scale?
That is where offshore platforms become interesting again.
