Vintage USA Guitars Made in...KANSAS??? The Guitologist 2023-06-19 | On a recent trip to the Dallas Guitar Show I ran across a line of vintage electric guitars I either never knew existed, or had forgotten existed – the Kustom K200 line. I had this video clip left over from my longer video of the event and decided these obscure and rare guitars deserved a bit of a deeper look...The story of Kustom began in 1964 when Bud Ross began producing solid state amplifiers with the signature “tuck and roll” coverings in Chanute, Kansas. Along about 1966, so the story goes, Bud Ross designed a guitar that was to be manufactured by the Holman-Woodell Guitar Company, which had a factory just down the road in Neodesha, Kansas. Though very short-lived, last from only 1965-1968, the Holman-Woodell factory is probably best remembered for their wildly-shaped Wurlitzer-branded guitars, which consisted of three models, the Cougar, the Wildcat, and the futuristic George Jetsonesque Gemini. After the Wurlitzer contract fell through in 1967, the Holman factory started producing a line of guitars with the Holman name on them. These were made in very limited quantities, and are almost never seen today. The chief designer for all the Holman-made guitars was a man named Doyle Reading. After the collapse of the Wurlitzer contract, sales declined at Holman, so Reading went to work for Kustom just up the road in Chanute. There he designed the K200 guitar lineup, with its Rickenbacker like cats eye sound hole and body shape. These guitars also seemed very Mosrite inspired with their zero fret and metal nut. The fret markers were unusual also, and depending on the exact model, could contain as many as FOUR dot inlays on the same fret space.The like the Holman-Woodell guitars before them, the Kustom guitar line was very short-lived, lasting only from 1967 through 1969. The quality is very high, and these were by no stretch of the imagination beginner or budget guitars. Bud Ross himself speculated that as few as 2000-3000 Kustom guitars were ever made in total, while others have estimated it's likely even less than that. Is THIS the Finest Guitar Amp FENDER Ever Made? The Guitologist 2023-03-14 | There's a lot of debate about what's the GREATEST AMP EVER MADE, but what if we try to whittle it down to the Greatest FENDER AMP ever made... I think I have found the answer. This is a 1966 Vibrolux Reverb. The 210 Vibrolux Reverb featured push-pull 6L6GC output and sat between the 112 Deluxe Reverb with 6V6 tubes and the larger Pro Reverb, Vibroverb, and Super Reverb, which all had more and bigger speakers with 6L6GC output. The owner was SHOCKED I did this to his Martin! The Guitologist 2023-03-10 | This Martin acoustic guitar is in desperate need of some repair. It's been covered in duct tape, has a cracked side, loose binding, bad electronics, and to top things off, it's go the beginnings of a Willie Nelson style "TRIGGER HOLE" in the top. Also the sound hole has broken away in places. In this video, we'll fix the crack and stabilize the soundboard by filling the Trigger Hole and repairing the broken sound hole. Upgrading the Output Transformer in an Epiphone Blues Custom 30 The Guitologist 2022-10-28 | In this video, we'll install a Hammond 1650HA push-pull output transformer in the 2006 Gibson Epiphone Blues Custom 30 amplifier we recently serviced. After replacing the power transformer with a Mercury Magnetics, this customer decided to go ahead and make this into the most rock solid amp we could make it by replacing the OT. REPAIR & MOD of a RARE 1966 VOX Berkeley Super Reverb Twin V8 VALVE AMP! The Guitologist 2022-09-25 | In this video, we'll repair what might be the CLEANEST vintage valve amp I've ever had on my bench. This is a 1966 Vox Berkeley Super Reverb, which is a rare Thomas Organ built TUBE AMP! Vox amps made by Thomas Organ in California USA are more associated with the later Solid State offerings like the Super Beatle, but this one, which was made for about one year, had EL84 output tubes was based on the valve AC-15 by JMI in Britain. It is the brother to the Cambridge, which was the combo version of this amp head. We will track down some issues with the amp, including possible live high voltage on the input and a broken Gibbs reverb tank. We'll also look at one fast, EASY MOD which will give the player an option of having a stock circuit or a GAIN BOOST! I'll show exactly where to place the mod by walking it through with a schematic. The Toughest Gig A Musician Ever Has To Play... The Guitologist 2022-08-26 | What's your toughest gig ever? Let me know in the comments. This was mine. I did not know this was being recorded. Found that out later. My Mamaw's name was Nora Inez Knight Linzy. She was a beautiful soul. She co-wrote the first song in this short set with me. The other song is a traditional gospel song called "Angel Band" from 1860, made famous by The Stanley Brothers. I also sang that song at my Papaw's service about a decade ago. His name was Lafe Kenneth Linzy. He served in WWII and Korea. That was my other hardest gig. I don't think there is any way to prepare for this kind of thing other than to practice the songs until they're engrained in your brain and just try not to choke up on the day. Easier said than done. Breaking the ice with a joke is probably a good idea too. The MOST POWERFUL GIBSON AMP of the 1960s - TITAN MEDALIST REPAIR & MODS! The Guitologist 2022-08-20 | The big brother of the Gibson Atlas 50W amp, this is one of only 148 Gibson TITAN Medalist amps ever made. The TITAN was the most powerful Gibson amp of the era, clocking in at 90 watts. The only problem is, for all the potential in these amps, they are poorly executed. The wiring is atrocious and sloppy, the layout of the channels invites noise, the tremolo uses a 0A2 regulator tube and optical LDR, which isn't usually the best sounding tremolo (I much prefer bias-modulating tremolo). This example had already gone through at LEAST three different techs, all doing mods and repairs before me, so this will be a fun one, to say the least. This one was completely dead, not passing any signal when switched ON. We will fix that issue and then fix the issue of extremely LOW OUTPUT, LOW VOLUME, which seems to be a common thing with many of these 70s Big Muffs. We will look at the BC239 transistor and 1N4148 clipping diode circuit and schematic along the way and discuss what many of the circuit components do and how they work to shape the sound.
