I've not been on the air properly for sometime as life hits us with curve balls.. I've only had a small antenna up as my President Himalaya is out of action (I blew it up). so many apologies to my radio friends for my lack of signal as small antenna's don't work as well (you know who you are) Thank you for all your support and well wishes concerning my health.

For those who don't know my health started to decline and I was diagnosed with Ortners disease.. It's when the heart doesn't pump right and under pressure it expands pushing my vocal cord against my spine this in turn make my voice go husky, but once rested im good to go but it has slowed me down somewhat.. im getting old lol

I have had this Sirio 2016 in the air before around two years ago for around a week but thought I'd give it another go..
looking forward to the stateside skip returning in a few weeks..

Linear Amplifier Problem. (Important See Description)

So here i came across a friend CT4671 and noticed his audio was breaking up.
The linear in question is a HLS 300.. it's maximum input power is 10 watts maximum and he was driving it at five watts..
Using two different microphones.. one the standard mic for the Anytone Ares 2 and a powered boom mic.. on both mics his audio was clipping out and when the linear was taken out of line although loud his audio was ok,
what was baffling to me was why the audio continued to cut out even when the linear was switched off.. obviously there is no way that I know of how his audio was still cutting out when the linear was switched off and in bypass mode.. unless there was some amount of RF feedback being returned into the radio from the linear.. your thoughts. no derogatory comments please about illegal equipment I do not tolerate trolling or insulant replies, I'm just trying to understand what is happening here. any help would be appreciated thank you.

KEY POINTS..

1, Even when the linear was switched off and in bypass mode the modulation still broke..

2, When the linear was taken away and out of line altogether the modulation (although loud) with echo for deliberate testing went back to normal..

3, Is it possible even when switched off the linear inline can make the modulation clip and cut out.. I have never seen that before..

4, The linear is new and works just fine with power output being where it should be..

5, It's obvious the linear was causing the issue, the linear was tested with a quarter watt at its lowest input and five watts maximum so the linear was not being over driven..
Has anyone got any idea why/how the linear was causing the problem even in bypass mode.

6, The Swr was low at around 1.2,
The linear was not being overdriven and the highest input was only 5 watts maximum and a quarter watt minimum when testing..

7, SIDENOTES The radio and the linear are both new..
Although his audio was a little loud I do not think the radio or either microphone was the issue.. my reasoning for this is because of the fact once the linear was taken completely out of line have a audio was ok and the distortion and clipping ceased..
Also both the radio and linear had there own separate power supplies which were more than capable of running his equipment..

FOOTNOTE.. Again I know his audio was over the top with echo as part of the testing when the linear was taken away I asked him to turn his modulation up along with the radio power to maximum to see if the audio cut out just using the radio with his antenna plugged in and the linear completely out of line his audio was loud but the initial problem of clipping and cutting out had gone.

On the bench in this video I am giving four Midland 77-805 PortaPaks from my collection a preliminary bench test for power output and to see if the microphones are working ok before I send them off to a radio technician for a full service..

I can only test with basic bench equipment and although my meters are pretty accurate these radios need to be serviced with professional bench test equipment by a qualified radio technician to make sure they are on frequency and as we all know radios over time can drop a little in frequency and need bringing back up to spec so they are spot on, the same with the modulation and power which have be tinkered with by previous owners many times over the years.

These radio's are much sort after as they make for a good outdoor communications transceiver and can run on there own battery supply and antenna.. or can be connected to a larger antenna and separate power supply... A very iconic CB radio.

The cases are made from top quality leather and handmade to a very high spec.. there was only six produced and as of now there are 5 available because I purchased one so if you want one you will have to get in there quick time as there are only five left in stock.

The Randy 3 is a top quality handset and is pretty heavy for its size so having one of these cases is comforting to know if I ever dropped mine on a hard surface like concrete it would be fully protected against scratches or worse breakages to the unit.

Thank you Alex 13TW666 from Leipzig Germany for a very nice QSO, as you will see in the video there was many station's calling in and making the contact difficult at times, the propagation was very good and on this day most countries in Europe were on the air making the most of excellent skip conditions.. but shortly into the conversation the frequency became much more tolerable and the conditions improved for both of us..

Tell me your thoughts about the differences between AM and FM and how it comes across, at the end of the day regardless of power output or which antenna we choose to use it's mother nature that does most of the hard work especially with long distance contacts on the skip..

Also what are your thoughts on the BHI noise cancelling speaker, have you tried it.. what were your results were they good or bad.. please let me know in the comments section thank you.

Europe On Fire .. Propagation Goes Crazy.

Included in this video are stations I made contacts with including a local station and friend Simon 26 - PL014 who was mobile in the city of Nottingham,

With many stations calling into the Netherlands Simon put the call out from his mobile set up at a low elevation point to the east of my location and made a fantastic contact under very difficult and busy skip conditions and also many stations fighting the odd and very fast QSB (fading of signals) so well done to Simon for making the contact.

While looking around for a decent swr power meter I came across this small meter.. initially I thought with the price being so cheap (£28) it was more of a cheap novelty item and would never be accurate.
I took the plunge anyway and to my surprise the meter worked as illustrated and was very accurate..
For a peak reading meter and being so cheap it surprised me as I was expecting it to be more of a gimmick..

According to the description in AliExpress the meter will read up to 120 watts on FM and 220 watts on SSB, with a +/- of 5%,, I tested it to it's max and it out performed some of my other meters I had paid much more for.

It's not just a cheap gimmick it actually works extremely well, and at the price of £28 free p&p you can't go wrong. other digital meters that do the same start of at around £140.

Sporadic E season is well and truly upon us right now and certainly makes for some great contacts..
Just before this full contact I had already spoken briefly with the station Anthony but the conditions dropped away very fast.

After floating around for a few minutes I came across Anthony and Fran again but this time the conditions were very good and made for an excellent contact..

Thank you both for a fantastic QSO it's always nice to speak with stations from the Emerald Isle and especially Galway which is a beautiful city in the west of Ireland. Best DX and 73 to you both.

Chatting to some stations in Brazil, Canary Islands, and Italy using the Yaesue 450D on around 75 watts with standard microphone with a vertical Gainmaster 5/8th wave antenna.

The skip has been working pretty good over the past few weeks, i got my radio back from the techy and all is working well, the problem the Yaesu had was some dry joints on the finals and something else that went wrong, much to technical for me to understand.. all ready now for the sporadic E season on 11 meters.

#Nissei DG 103 .. Third Time Lucky.. ?

This is the third Nissei DG 103 meter I have tested, the first two was purchased new by me and sent back to the seller as both of them did not read the correct wattage, SWR, or Ref regardless of how many watts was put into them.. the seller reciprocated my complaint and gave me a full refund.
This third meter was gifted to me by a subscriber and friend Scotty who I chat with in the radio lounge, he watched the video I did on my channel a while back and afterwards told me he had not had any issues with the meter he was using,

So after he upgraded his Nissei meter he gifted me the meter he had been using and told me there was nothing wrong with it and I should have no problems using it.
Two weeks later a parcel arrived and inside was the Nissei meter and a Astatic microphone to put on my Stryker 955HPC.. I thank you Scotty for your kind generosity and I appreciate your gifts very much.

I was optimistic about the meter but after testing it i was surprised to see it working well and being accurate, I suppose there are times when we purchase items we lose faith in and after my experience with this particular meter my faith in them has been somewhat restored, I guess there is good and bad in the Mix when it comes buying equipment.

Calling All Yasue 450d Operators .. Do I Need A Technician.

I've had a recurring issue with my Yasue 450d.. it seems when the radio has been turned off for a long period of time upon turning it back on the radio will not transmit on FM..

I'm wondering if this is a start up error which stops the radio from transmitting with the radio being cold..
It seems once the radio has been running for an hour or so the radio sorts itself out and then starts to transmit on FM..

I cannot ever remember this being a problem in the past or if it has been I've never noticed, but this year so far I have been using my other radios to make contacts on and not used the Yasue until recently. The past few times (maybe three or four times) the radio doesn't transmit on FM when left for some time and seems to me like it needs to warm up.. then after a while it starts to transmit on FM.
SSB and AM seem to work just fine on transmit from the initial start up and the output power is correct on both AM and SSB.

If any technicians out there have heard of this issue before I would be grateful for your input. I have not seen or heard of any other 450d that as had this problem.

Gainmaster 5/8th Wave .. Pivotal Point For Guying The Antenna.

Over the past six months I have been lowering my Gainmaster when the storms roll in and there have been some storms recently which have caused structural damage to properties, so I have been playing it safe and lowering my highest antenna the Gainmaster as it's height is 72 feet above the ground when sitting in it's usual position.

Rather than continuously lowering it I have decided to guy the antenna as well as the pole to give it added security and strength when the wind gets strong.. I have seen other stations which have guyed their antennas but never seen a Gainmaster antenna itself guyed.. I have also been around the forums and seen mixed comments on the optimal point at which a Gainmaster is best guyed..

Any help and information would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Nissei DG 103 Meter .. Serious Issues

Since i purchased the Nissei DG 103 meter i haven't been able to get any kind of accurate reading from it, either for forward power, Ref, or SWR..
Talking to other stations it seems they are also having problems getting any kind of accurate readings from it..

Thankfully the one i show in this video is still under guarantee and i will at some point in the near future be sending it back.. In the radio world usually you get what you pay for and although expensive for what it is and paying £140 with p&p you would think a meter at that price would at least perform well.

Okay so compared to other meters it's relatively cheaper than some but in saying that at this price it should at least give a decent reading of the values with simple forward power readings, ref, and swr..

I have tested the meter against other cheaper models and it certainly doesn't compare.. one thing i had noticed is there are five and maybe more identical models out there of these meters on the market some are branded names like MyDel, Mfj, Nissai, and KPO, while others are unbranded like the Chinese versions..

One thing i noticed is that the Mfj model on the switch states HF- U-VHF while all the other models state 0-300 watts to 1200watts on the switch, yet looking at the schematic diagram on line for all models including the Mfj are all the same diagram which is even more confusing.

I will be sending mine back and ordering another meter as i simply cannot understand why this meter does not give accurate readings.
Also for anyone else who is thinking of buying this meter here's an heads up .. they do not read P.E.P (peak envelope performance) on SSB, so that's something to think about before parting with your cash..

Also while testing the meter i noticed the higher the wattage you run through the meter the faster the drop off in the wattage reading.. Transmitting 500 watts with a carrier of over 45 seconds going through the meter decreased the reading from just over 500 watts to 350 watts yet the linear is working fine, i know this because i sent the linear back at first thinking there was a problem with it.. on one of my other meters there was no drop off in power reading so after everything else had been tested the conclusion was that the Nissei meter has some serious issues

I also switched power supplies to make sure there was no drop off in voltage, the psu's had no issues either. I cannot give the meter any credit at all and because of the irratic nature of the readings it's basically a useless piece of equipment.. Testing with a dummy load or on air the meter just didn't work as it should.

I have to say there are so many radio's in my collection and so many more I would like to own, I hope one day that I can present them to the public in an exhibition to show the hayday of CB radio during the seventies and eighties..
This was the golden era of CB radio and I hope eventually my collection will bring back many memories for people to look at from a bygone era.

The Binatone series of radio's were sought after back then for there simple yet durable reliability and the crown of the series was the Binatone Five Star, both the Route 66 and Five Star are still a very good working radio even after 40 years and for nostalgic collectors like myself in new condition are a rarity to obtain.
