Me and Anthony made this full instrumental/vocal cover of "Break Through It All" from Sonic Frontiers! Hope ya like it!

After seeing Rich's cover, Anthony suggested I do this song with him. The instrumental fits my style really well so it was a blast to make!
After Anthony had sent his vocals over, I thought it'd be fun to add in some of my own screams and I had a lot of fun with it! I did some more yell-type screams that I've never done before and in general screamed louder than I have with previous stuff. I think our screams combined sound really sick!
(The only parts I added screams on were at the "yooooo" part, the "don't look down" parts and at the breakdown with "you'll wake the beast inside".)
So one of the lyrics in the song is "don't look down", and coincidentally, we both covered "Do Not Look Down" by Meshuggah a few months ago. On top of that, we both made separate references to that song (I'm pretty sure Anthony's was intentional, but mine was purely a coincidence lol).
When the main riff of the song comes back in a half-time feel at 3;33, I thought it would be cool to modify the riff to make it offset from the backbeat a bit. I did this by adding an extra note to the 16-note phrase, which makes the phrase start a 16-note late every time it comes back. I didn't realize it at the time, but that's pretty much how to main riff to "Do Not Look Down" by Meshuggah works.
A 17/16 phrase over 4/4, just like "Do Not Look Down" lol. Although, the modified riff I made gets truncated after only 4 repetitions, which is a lot sooner than the Meshuggah one.
Anthony's reference was that wacky pitch-shift solo thingy at 3;33, which was inspired by the solo from "Do Not Look Down" that he played for my cover!

VOCALS
Anthony's vocals were honestly really easy to mix, I came up with a vocal chain in just a few minutes and used it for pretty much every track!

Kick: EZD Bright Room, 14x24" Masshoff (Prog Metal Preset)
- Logic EQ boosting 54 Hz, cutting 102 Hz
Extra Kick Layer: SSD 5, Kick Dream SSD
- In SSD: made the attack, decay and release really short and snappy
- Logic EQ: cut some 102 Hz, a lot of 850 Hz, 2.9k, and boosted 10k
- Sample delay: 7.6 ms
Snare: EZD Bright Room, 8x14" Ludwig Coliseum (Prog Metal Preset)
- Logic Multiband compression to control the lows/low mids
- Logic Exciter at 17k
- Aux send verb: Logic Space Designer: Blue Plate, 93% size
Toms: SSD 5, Tom Pearl MMC 10, 12, 16, and 18
- In SSD: made the attack, decay and release a bit snappier.
Extra Tom Layer: SSD 5, Tom Qik SSD 10, 12, 14, 16
- In SSD: made the attack, decay and release really short and snappy
- Mixed in a bit quietly, it's only there to add a little snap to the other toms.
Cymbals: GGD Modern and Massive, (Default Raw Preset)
- Turned the hi-hats down in a bit in all of the mics
- Logic Chromaverb: chamber, 60% size and density, 2.5 s decay, 61% distance, 93% dry, 35% wet

RHYTHM GUITARS
I used the preset I made for my song "The Bone Zone":
Logic Pedalboard (Pitch shift pedal) → Archetype: Gojira (OD Pedal low tone, 3rd amp, 1st cab, 57 and 414) → Logic Multiband Compressor → Logic EQ
Logic Mulitband Comp:
- Control the lows and low mids
Logic EQ:
- Cut 5.6k with a 1.5 Q bell
- Roll off the high-end with lowpass at 11k
I also obsessed over my picking technique a little bit. I demo'd out the rhythm guitars before recording the final tracks and wasn't satisfied with them. It's hard to describe what I did differently, but I think it sounds better.
