A new NBER working paper found that soda purchases among SNAP recipients fell roughly 12–13% after 10 states restricted the use of SNAP benefits on sugary drinks. But did the policy actually reduce sugar consumption? A significant portion of the money shifted toward other sugary drinks and fruit juices that weren't restricted. The study also raises questions about stigma, personal choice, and whether these effects will last long-term.
