Duck Ugly (2003) Maxies Random Junk 2022-07-06 | After serving as art director for The Nightmare Before Christmas, Cow & Chicken and a handful of Wotsits adverts, cartoonist Deane Taylor ventured into creating his own feature films for a brief period at TerraGlyph's animation studio in Dublin. His first effort at proving himself was Carnivalé, in which a group of friends wind up in a cursed Disneyland that will turn them into carnival attractions if they attempt to escape. After its premiere at Galway Film Fleadh, it failed to strike a deal with international rights holders - aside from France and Israel, it never again screened in Ireland or the UK despite Hugh Laurie and Helena Bonham Carter leading its voice cast, a North American distribution deal fell through and its unreleased video game adaptation was rescued from obscurity with greater ease than its English dub, which recently surfaced on the Internet Archive from a Chinese DVD that crops it to heck. It's a spooky, imaginative little gem despite its obvious imperfections, and certainly deserved better.Taylor was not so satisfied with how Carnivalé turned out, so one can only imagine how he and anyone involved must feel about his subsequent feature work, Duck Ugly. Co-produced with French studio Millimages once again by TerraGlyph, with a few contributions by Cartoon Saloon, Taylor and Emmanuel Klotz's (Lascars) hour-long spin on various fables and n*rsery rh*mes sees an Ugly Duckling in a 'Chosen One' situation when a mob of Little Pigs seize the land of fairy tales, as the seventh born child of any family is prophesised as the one who will rid the land of tyranny. How much do they do with this premise, you may ask? Such an unconventional and curious duck, the sworn Protector? Spoiler alert: the bare minimum.Duck Ugly went straight to DVD in France and could not secure a single medium of Irish distribution. And unlike Carnivalé's French DVD, it came with the cleanest copy of the original English dub you could possibly find, which is saying something given that the audio deteriorates for eight minutes from the 11:00 mark. The animation's lip sync does not feel language-specific, neither perfectly tailored to the English or French dialogue, and the script is threadbare even compared to Carnivalé. It's worth watching for the art direction, some glimmers of genuine absurdism and morbidity and, like all good lost and obscure media, curiosity's sake.Find both dubs here:archive.org/details/duck-ugly
Cats Dont Dance trailer (1997) Maxies Random Junk 2021-01-24 | Presenting the original trailer for Turner's box office flop turned animated cult classic Cats Don't Dance in the highest available quality (480p upscaled), ripped from the widescreen Warner Archive DVD and finally uploaded to YouTube as few fans of the film seem to be aware this DVD is even available to begin with. And incredibly easy to rip from, too!
The Seven Ravens / Die sieben Raben (1937) Maxies Random Junk 2020-09-22 | The first animated feature film adaptation of any of Grimms' fairy tales, predating Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs by just three weeks, the first and only surviving feature film created by the Diehl brothers boasts some of the most meticulous stop-motion animation the medium had to offer early in the 20th century, including camera and composition techniques years ahead of their time, and yet has unfairly fallen under public consciousness ever since. Animal Wars (2000) Maxies Random Junk 2020-07-21 | Forty years ago, a team of animators and voice actors completed a satire on the Summer and Winter Olympics taking place that year, an Olympic show with furries. This team would later find themselves involved in some of America's most beloved animation. Twenty years later, a low-budget animation crew somewhere in Russia took a good look at this film, was reminded of the animated portion of Bedknobs & Broomsticks and thought to themselves, "uhhhhhhhhh we can do that too?!" The result is Odessa Animation's Animal Wars, the self-proclaimed "one and only animated lampoon on Super Bowl". A movie that for some reason is set in space, has dinosaurs, a T2 parody, multiple references to suicide, mild cursing, the worst sound editing in the world and such a brazen furry lust that it makes Animalympics before it look Christian. It's a blistering calamity of a satire that isn't even sure which demographic it's trying to appease, but hey, at least it has sexy cheerleader mice, am I right?The Russian DVD was used, and was synced up on Premiere with most of the English version. Another copy of the English version available on YouTube is not pan-and-scanned like the one up for rental but is inferior in quality, and all copies of the English version cut out Foxy's post-credit musical number, so expect an abrupt cut from English to Russian dialogue followed by some almost unintelligible English singing.

Freaky Flickers: Quest for the Golden Flicker - trailer 1 Maxies Random Junk 2020-06-18 | Take a gander at what I just finally found on my hard drive, kiddies and Flickers. The first concept trailer for the notorious Freaky Flickers movie, the second recorded instance of a low-budget, off-kilter, 90-minute advertisement intended for a larger distributor ending up instead in the hands of one other man, never to have more than two minutes of original footage screened to the public again. But unlike Foodfight, Freaky Flickers never saw a future at all, and inevitably so. Animated, written and directed by Cary Howe on a budget of just $250,000, MGM would purchase the rights to the film in February 2009 with the intention of rolling it in 2,800 cinemas across the US, to which Howe reluctantly accepted. However, in June that same year, Howe entrusted editor David Kann with the film in its unfinished state, took a nap and woke up to discover that the film had been stolen, no less by none other than the brand's creator, Peter Gantner. Ever since, the film has been the subject of memes and mockery from connoisseurs of low-grade animation and also the interest of lost media hunters. Dot and the Smugglers (1987) Maxies Random Junk 2020-04-05 | Already posted here just recently but uploaded here anyway in DVD quality for those who'd prefer it, Dot - in the only film of hers to be designed by the late Jacques Muller - teams up with her extended wilderness family and two neighbourhood boys (of course they're thin and chubby, a template I can't stand in the least) to forbid a couple of mangy goons from smuggling the Bunyip into their circus, or as an old friend of hers once called it "a prison". Along the way, they give a 10-years-later reprise to a bouncy tune from the original Dot and the Kangaroo, and discover that the fabled beast who traumatised younglings who caught said film on TV one morning might not be so nightmarish after all.
Dot in Space (1994) Maxies Random Junk 2020-04-05 | The ninth and final chapter of the weird and wonderful Dot ennealogy, and the one film that oddly never made it onto the Aussie Kids TV channel nor anybody else's channels following its removal here, 80's Australia's favourite barefoot activist sadly ditches her photographic surroundings for a fully hand-painted environment, but ends up in a foreign, divided society, incarcerated and demoralised by an authority who does not believe she is welcome or legal, which sends this little girl fighting tooth and nail, crossing the farthest reaches of this newfound country to abolish a slave trade and overthrow a fascist regime. In space, no less.

Anyway, this is Netflix's logo played before theatrical releases of their original films and Anima in all formats that would later pave the way for their 2019 streaming ident, created in the wake of their validity as a genuine film distributor, introduced in front of Roma and produced by Imaginary Forces.

Dear Anne: The Gift of Hope trailer (2005) Maxies Random Junk 2019-03-11 | Ari Folman's upcoming Where is Anne Frank is the first successful attempt at creating an animated feature film based in any way on the her diary. The last attempt, however, by Italian filmmakers Dario Picciau and Roberto Malini, would recreate her likeness in motion capture. The film was to focus on the influence Emily Dickinson's literature had on Anne's (Katie McGovern), but also paralleled it with her influence on a girl in current-day America named Emily (Katherine Wilson). Slated for a 2006 release and then a 2007 release, the project died along the way, and perhaps for the better. Apart from a single documentary short, Picciau and Malini were never seen again. A reel of work-in-progress footage can be found on Vimeo, with CG recreations of 1940's Nazi Germany that are undoubtedly astonishing for their time.vimeo.com/17410753
