Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS): A Personal Example of the Opening the Doors of Perception. Anthony Peake 2024-09-19 | As some of you will know, I have written and lectured extensively about a little-known psychological "illness" known as Charles Bonnet Syndrome. ("Opening The Doors of Perception. 2016. pp. 102-117, "The Hidden Universe". 2019. pp 59-61 & pp 152-154, This is experienced by people who have declining vision and I have particularly cited the experiences of my own mother. Unfortunately I never had the chance to record my mother describing her "hallucinations". As you may also know, my mother was subsequently diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and subsequently died of this terrible illness in 2018.In March of 2019 I received a phone call from my aunt, then in her early 90s. I was astonished to discover she was experiencing very similar "visions" to that of her sister-in-law. She agreed to me recording her description of whatshe was seeing (and hearing) in her flat in Birkenhead in the UK. The sound quality is not good, but listen carefully to what she describes to me.Just like my mother, my aunt was subsequently diagnosed with Alzheimer's and died three years ago.I have long argued (specifically in my book "Opening The Doors of Perception) that CBS is directly linked to Alzheimer's and that the amyloid plaques, whose destruction of the brain's microtubules, are indirectly responsible for age-related CBS, indirectly cause the "hallucinations".I argue that the destruction of the microtubules inhibits the brain's abilities to act as an attenuator ........ it compromises the "censorship" by which the greater sensual reality is denied to most of us.For a full discussion of this hypothesis, together with a broader description of what I call "The Huxleyian Spectrum" please read my books "Opening the Doors of Perception" and "The Hidden Universe".
