When a beloved celebrity claims Christianity, sings gospel songs, talks about Jesus, and builds a reputation for kindness, many believers assume the case is closed. But what happens when the fruit tells a more complicated story? Let's take a closer look at Dolly Parton through the lens of Scripture, not emotion, nostalgia, fame, or public image. From New Age language about God as “energy,” “nature,” or a “force,” to statements about psychics and mediums running in the family, to open support for lifestyles the Bible calls sin, the question is not whether Dolly was nice, talented, generous, or loved by millions. The question is whether Christians are still willing to test every spirit.
One of the biggest issues addressed here is the way many believers use “judge not” as a shield against discernment. Jesus never told His people to turn off judgment and blindly accept anyone who uses Christian language. He warned about wolves in sheep’s clothing, false prophets, hypocrisy, deception, and fruit. Matthew 7 does not forbid judgment altogether. It warns against hypocritical judgment while still calling believers to see clearly, remove the beam, and help others with truth. Love is not pretending sin is harmless. Love is warning someone before they drink poison, even when the world calls that warning hate.
This is not about attacking a person after death, idolizing controversy, or acting as if any human can decide someone’s eternal destiny. God alone is the Judge. But Christians are commanded to discern doctrine, fruit, spirits, teachers, public influence, and deception. In the last days, the most dangerous lies will not always look dark and obvious. They will often come wrapped in kindness, music, humanitarianism, religious language, and a version of “love” that removes repentance. Have we confused being nice with being born again?
