Located in the Book Cliffs of Utah, lies the ruins of Sego. Coal was discovered by English rancher, Harry Ballard who sold his small mining operation in 1911 to a group of Salt Lake City investors.
The town's original name was Nelson, however, it was renamed in 1918, after the sego lilies that bloom in the canyon.
In its heyday, the population of the town was approximately 500. Miners were allowed to build their cabins anywhere along the canyon. The stone company store, the boarding house, and many other establishments all had their own water supply.
The railroad, built in 1912, ran from Thompson Springs and made nine monthly round trips.
Unfortunately, the boom wasn’t to last. As the water dried up, the mines closed, and by 1947 only a few families remained. A flash flood in the 1950s sealed the fate of the town, and the remaining residents left.
