This video presents SEAFAR, an innovative mobility solution using digital connectivity to enable inland vessels to be operated remotely from onshore control centres. Vessels equipped with high-resolution cameras, sensors and secure communication systems transmit video and navigation data in real time, allowing trained operators to monitor and control navigation from shore. Reliable, high-capacity and low-latency mobile cross-border connectivity, including 5G networks, is a core enabler of these operations. By supporting remote navigation, SEAFAR aims to address labour shortages, improve working conditions and fleet efficiency, strengthen situational awareness, and make inland waterway transport more competitive and sustainable. The cross-border model also highlights the need for consistent connectivity and aligned regulatory frameworks along European transport corridors. The project was partially funded by the Belgian Government.
