We’re introducing green spaces into grey playgrounds in schools across the North West to help manage rainwater with special ‘thirsty’ planters and raingardens. These sustainable drainage solutions are helping to soak up, slow down and divert rainfall, while also attracting wildlife and providing a living learning environment for the region’s schools. We’ve worked with 15 schools across Greater Manchester so far, and aim to reach up to 400 schools by 2030. It's part of a bigger plan to invest £280 million to introduce more nature-based solutions to help manage our region’s rainfall in a way that brings extra benefits to communities and the environment that they can see and feel. In this five-year multi-project programme, we’re working with schools, local authorities, charities, businesses, community organisations and regulators including the Environment Agency to introduce more blue-green infrastructure across the region and lead the way in the utilities industry.
