Carbon compounds can be classified into saturated and unsaturated based on the types of bonds between carbon atoms.
1. Saturated Carbon Compounds
These compounds contain only single bonds between carbon atoms.
They are also called alkanes (general formula: CβHββββ).
Example: Methane (CHβ), Ethane (CβHβ), Propane (CβHβ)
2. Unsaturated Carbon Compounds
These compounds contain at least one double or triple bond between carbon atoms.
They are classified into:
Alkenes (contain double bonds) β Example: Ethene (CβHβ), Propene (CβHβ)
Alkynes (contain triple bonds) β Example: Ethyne (CβHβ), Propyne (CβHβ)
