GWT: Big Mountain Pass to Davis Creek Trail July 2019

At the time of this hike, the 2 night 28-mile/45 km portion shown here was the roughest GWT portion I had completed so far on my longer project to hike or bike all of the off-pavement portions of Utah's Great Western Trail. The miles surrounding the SLC/Davis County line were especially faint but still findable to the determined eye. Water sourcing would have surely been tougher on the ridge in mid-July during a lesser snow year. I found that ordering up an Uber from the Davis Creek Trailhead was an easy way to return to where I started at Big Mountain Pass.

$S6 E12 Mt Raymond Circumnavigation, Wasatch Range, Utah June 2018 Mt Raymond is slightly lower than its popular neighbor, Gobblers Knob, but it is more fun to climb and worthy for circumnavigation. The angular peak rises from the apex of three weathered limestone ridges that come together at roughly equal angles on the eastern side of the Mount Olympus Wilderness Area. There are a variety of trailhead options to approach Mt Raymond. For this loop, started on the Porter Fork Trail, connected with the Desolation trail and returned on the Bowman Fork Trail. The approach to Mount Raymond climbs steadily up the grassy ridge from Baker Pass for 0.5 miles, but then seems to disappear at the base of a badly fractured knife-edge ridge of quartzite. Proceed straight up the crest of the ridge. Although you will need both hands, the climb along the knife-edge is not nearly as bad as it looks. Furthermore, this is the worst part of the climb. Beyond the knife-edge there is more minor scrambling, with bits and pieces of the trail visible. It is easiest if you stay right on the crest of the ridge. Within another ten to fifteen minutes you should be at the top.
