Like in India, where the quest to save more babies’ lives began with a mother’s touch.
Immediate Kangaroo Mother Care, or iKMC, is a skin-to-skin technique inspired by how Kangaroo babies stay inside their mother’s pouch. Previously done only on stable and healthy babies, the latest research shows that even unstable, pre-term or low-birth-weight babies can benefit from their mother’s touch, immediately after birth.
iKMC can potentially save an additional 150,000 newborns yearly. That’s one baby saved every 3 minutes!
“It is immensely satisfying to think that the research you have done would help save even a few lives. In this case, millions. For me, that is what keeps you going.” –Dr. Bahl, Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research

The investment: a Friesian cow that produced 16 liters of milk per day—double the amount her cow produced before. That allowed Josephine to feed her children and have enough milk left over to sell and use to pay for her children’s education. A double whammy.

Like in China, where establishing the first-ever free HPV pilot vaccine program could prevent a deadly disease from reaching millions of women.
In a community like Ordos, where their rate of cervical cancer is higher than the national average in China, the necessity to protect young women through equitable HPV vaccine distribution was at an all-time high. Our partners at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences Cancer Hospital and the Ordos Health Commission knew they had to implement a program. Thanks to the success of the vaccine program in Ordos, more and more cities and provinces are launching free HPV vaccine programs. Now, communities all across China are finding strength in unity to one day get the HPV vaccine into the National Immunization Program and eliminate cervical cancer once and for all.

The unpredictable nature of these livelihoods means their income streams are lower and less consistent than for their male counterparts. It also means they are invisible to most formal lenders and can’t secure the capital they need to grow a business, hindering their ability to increase their incomes and create additional jobs in their communities.
If more women had access to capital to open or expanded their own businesses, they would be able to weather economic of personal shocks and build resilience, reducing poverty and driving economic growth. Closing the gender gap in employment and entrepreneurship could raise the global gross domestic product by more than 20 percent.

When scientists in the UK and Kenya join forces to produce higher-yield dairy cows, it doesn’t just mean more milk. It means a thriving local economy, nutrition for kids, and funding for their education.
“Milk is white gold. It is one of the most nutritious animal-sourced foods. So when you increase milk yield, you increase opportunities for food and nutritional security for not only the farmers but their neighbours.” – Okeyo Mwai, Principal Scientist at the International Livestock Research Institute.
