When the Crescent Hotel first opened, it catered to the wealthy, offering an opulent experience with high-class amenities. However, the resort struggled to stay profitable, and within a few decades, it was forced to close. In the years that followed, the building served several purposes, including as a college for young women. It wasn’t until the 1930s, however, that the hotel's most infamous chapter began—one that would shape its haunted legacy.
Dr. Norman Baker and His "Cancer Cure" Hospital
In 1937, the Crescent Hotel was purchased by a man named Dr. Norman Baker, a con artist and self-proclaimed doctor who had no formal medical training. Baker turned the hotel into a hospital, claiming to have found the cure for cancer. Desperate patients from all over the country flocked to Eureka Springs in hopes of being cured by his miraculous treatments. However, Baker’s "cure" was nothing more than a sham, and many patients died under his care, their bodies hidden away in the basement morgue or buried in secret.
It is said that the spirits of these unfortunate souls never left the hotel, and many believe their restless ghosts continue to haunt the Crescent to this day. Baker’s hospital was eventually shut down when he was arrested for mail fraud, but the damage had already been done. His sinister legacy lingers in the halls of the hotel, and his former "hospital" rooms are said to be some of the most haunted areas.
The Hauntings of the Crescent Hotel
The Crescent Hotel’s reputation as a paranormal hotspot has drawn countless ghost hunters, paranormal investigators, and thrill-seekers over the years. Visitors and staff alike have reported experiencing a wide range of unexplained phenomena, from ghostly apparitions and strange sounds to objects moving on their own.
One of the most famous ghosts is that of Michael, a young Irish stonemason who worked on the construction of the hotel. According to legend, Michael fell to his death from what is now Room 218, which is said to be the most haunted room in the entire hotel. Guests staying in Room 218 have reported hearing loud bangs, seeing doors open and close on their own, and feeling an overwhelming presence in the room.
Another well-known spirit is Theodora, who is believed to be a former cancer patient at Baker’s hospital. She is often seen on the fourth floor near Room 419, where she politely introduces herself as a guest before mysteriously disappearing.
The morgue in the basement, where Baker stored the bodies of his deceased patients, is considered one of the most haunted parts of the hotel. Paranormal investigators have captured EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) recordings of voices and strange sounds coming from the morgue. Some visitors claim to have seen shadowy figures or felt cold spots while walking through this dark and chilling space.
In addition to these well-known spirits, there have been reports of other mysterious occurrences throughout the hotel. Guests have claimed to see apparitions of nurses pushing gurneys down the hallways, children’s laughter echoing through empty rooms, and the ghostly figure of a woman in Victorian dress wandering the grounds.
Today, the Crescent Hotel is not only a luxurious place to stay but also a popular destination for those seeking a brush with the supernatural. The hotel offers ghost tours every night, where visitors can explore the most haunted areas and learn more about the spirits that are said to roam its halls. Guests can also stay in some of the most haunted rooms, including Room 218, to experience the paranormal activity firsthand.
The hotel's history has been featured on numerous television shows, including Ghost Hunters and Most Haunted, further cementing its reputation as a premier haunted destination. Some visitors come seeking thrills, while others are skeptics hoping to debunk the hotel’s ghostly reputation. But many leave with chilling stories of their own.
If you're feeling brave, book a stay at the Crescent Hotel and discover for yourself why it’s considered one of the most haunted hotels in America.

History of Iowa 80 Truckstop
The idea for Iowa 80 Truckstop originated with Bill Moon, a pioneer in the trucking industry. In the early 1960s, Moon worked for Standard Oil (now known as Amoco) and was tasked with finding a prime location for a truckstop along Interstate 80, a major east-west highway that was still under construction at the time. Walcott, Iowa, was chosen for its ideal location at Exit 284, where truckers frequently passed through. When Iowa 80 opened its doors in 1964, it started as a small facility offering basic services like fuel, a small restaurant, and showers for truckers.
As the trucking industry grew over the decades, so did Iowa 80. In 1984, the Moon family purchased the truckstop outright and began expanding it to meet the increasing needs of truck drivers and travelers. Today, Iowa 80 Truckstop covers over 225 acres, with a main building that spans more than 100,000 square feet. It operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, offering a wide variety of amenities and services to those on the road.
Iowa 80 Truckstop is much more than just a place to fill up your tank—it’s like a small town under one roof. Here’s a look at the many attractions and services that make it a unique destination:
At its core, Iowa 80 serves as a vital hub for truck drivers. With 16 diesel fuel lanes, parking for over 900 trucks, and a 7-bay truck service center, drivers can easily get their vehicles refueled, serviced, and back on the road. Iowa 80 also offers a state-of-the-art Truckomat truck wash to keep vehicles clean, and a CAT Scale for weighing trucks.
Dining Options
Travelers at Iowa 80 can choose from a wide variety of dining options to suit any craving. The main attraction is the Iowa 80 Kitchen, a 300-seat, full-service restaurant that offers hearty home-cooked meals, including everything from breakfast to dinner favorites. There's also a 24-hour buffet and a popular Salad Bar, making it easy for anyone to find a satisfying meal no matter the time of day. For those looking for a quicker bite, Iowa 80 also features a Food Court with popular fast-food chains like Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, Wendy’s, Dairy Queen, and Caribou Coffee. Whether you’re craving comfort food or something on-the-go, Iowa 80 has you covered.
Shopping Galore
The truckstop is also home to the largest trucker's store in the world, boasting over 50,000 square feet of retail space. The Iowa 80 Super Truck Showroom sells everything a trucker could need, including chrome accessories, LED lights, custom interiors, and more. For non-truckers, there are plenty of unique gifts, souvenirs, clothing, and gadgets available at the Travel Store. Whether you need gear for the road or something to remember your trip by, there’s plenty to browse.
In addition to the main store, Iowa 80 has a separate Gift Shop filled with Iowa-themed memorabilia, toys, books, and jewelry. There’s even a dedicated Custom Shop for truckers looking to personalize their rigs with everything from custom paint to lighting and upholstery.
Entertainment and Amenities
Iowa 80 Truckstop goes far beyond the basics, offering plenty of entertainment and amenities for long-haul truckers and tourists alike. There’s a movie theater for those looking to unwind after a long drive, a barber shop to freshen up, and even a chiropractor available for sore muscles after hours on the road. Truckers can enjoy hot showers in one of the 24 private showers, or take advantage of the laundry facilities to catch up on chores.
For those who want to stretch their legs, there’s an expansive truck museum on site. The Iowa 80 Trucking Museum offers visitors a glimpse into the history of trucking, showcasing dozens of antique trucks, historical exhibits, and rare trucking memorabilia. It’s a great stop for both truck enthusiasts and families traveling through the area.
Whether you’re a trucker on a cross-country haul or a family on a road trip, Iowa 80 Truckstop in Walcott, Iowa, offers an experience unlike any other. Its blend of essential services, entertainment, dining, and shopping makes it a must-see destination for anyone traveling along Interstate 80.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Wienerschnitzel grew rapidly, expanding its footprint beyond California and becoming a favorite for many seeking classic American fast food. In 1973, the company simplified its name from “Der Wienerschnitzel” to just “Wienerschnitzel,” reinforcing its focus on quality hot dogs. The chain continued to innovate by introducing new items, including their famous chili sauce, which became a staple of their menu and a defining feature of the brand.
The chain’s growth was not just limited to the menu; the company also explored new restaurant formats. The iconic A-frame structure of the original Wienerschnitzel locations became a recognizable symbol, contributing to the brand's image and appeal. As the years passed, Wienerschnitzel maintained its commitment to affordability and quality, which resonated with customers across different regions.
In the 1990s, Wienerschnitzel further diversified its menu, adding items like chili cheese fries and Tastee Freez soft-serve desserts, broadening its appeal to a wider customer base. This diversification helped the chain survive in a competitive market dominated by burger and chicken restaurants.
By the early 2000s, Wienerschnitzel had cemented its position as the world’s largest hot dog chain, with over 300 locations across the United States. The brand continued to focus on expanding through franchising, which allowed it to enter new markets and attract a new generation of hot dog enthusiasts. In recent years, Wienerschnitzel has embraced modern trends by offering online ordering and incorporating more diverse menu options, including vegetarian and healthier choices.
In 2024, Wienerschnitzel unveiled plans for further expansion, opening new locations in areas like Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and exploring markets in the Pacific Northwest and Texas. This strategic growth has been driven by the chain’s commitment to providing a unique dining experience centered around its iconic hot dogs and frozen treats
The Siloam Springs location was opened with much fanfare in May 2024 by the ownership group, Tejas Dogs. It was part of an expansion plan for Arkansas, which includes the opening of 20 Wienerschnitzel restaurants over several years. The grand opening involved a ribbon-cutting ceremony and community celebrations, drawing attention and excitement from locals. The positive reception in Siloam Springs has reaffirmed the restaurant's place in the region, and it aims to be a popular spot for those seeking classic hot dogs and frozen treats. This new location continues Wienerschnitzel's tradition of providing quick, quality meals, setting itself apart in the fast-food market by focusing on unique offerings rather than the more saturated burger and chicken segments.

Black Jack's nickname, "Black Jack," came from his preference for dressing in black. His gang operated primarily in New Mexico, Colorado, and Texas, often targeting trains and stagecoaches. One of their most infamous crimes occurred on September 3, 1897, when they attempted to rob a train near Folsom, New Mexico. The robbery failed, and Ketchum was wounded.
Ketchum's criminal exploits came to a dramatic end on August 16, 1899, when he attempted to rob another train in New Mexico. This time, he was captured by law enforcement. During his trial, Ketchum was found guilty of attempted train robbery and sentenced to death. His execution was scheduled for April 26, 1901, in Clayton, New Mexico.
The Execution of Black Jack Ketchum
Black Jack Ketchum's execution is one of the most infamous in the history of the American Old West. He was the only person in New Mexico to be executed for attempted train robbery. On the day of his hanging, a large crowd gathered in Clayton to witness the event. The execution was poorly managed, and when the trapdoor opened, Ketchum was decapitated due to the excessive drop.
The gruesome nature of Ketchum's execution added to his legend. His head was sewn back onto his body for burial, and he was laid to rest in the Clayton Cemetery. The event left a lasting mark on the town of Clayton and contributed to its historical significance.
Clayton, New Mexico: A Historic Town
Clayton, New Mexico, established in 1887, is a small town located in the northeastern part of the state. It became an important hub during the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to its location along the Santa Fe Trail and later as a stop on the Burlington Northern Railroad. The town played a significant role in the cattle industry, serving as a major shipping point for cattle from Texas and Oklahoma.
The history of Clayton is deeply intertwined with the legends of the Old West, including the story of Black Jack Ketchum. The town's historical significance is preserved through various landmarks and attractions that draw visitors interested in the rich heritage of the region.
Clayton's connection to the Old West and its infamous outlaw, Black Jack Ketchum, makes it a unique destination for history enthusiasts and those interested in the lore of the American frontier. The town's commitment to preserving its heritage ensures that the stories of the past remain alive for future generations to explore and appreciate.
In conclusion, Black Jack Ketchum and Clayton, New Mexico, are indelibly linked through their shared history. The tale of Ketchum's life and death, coupled with Clayton's role in the cattle industry and its position along historic trade routes, make this small town a significant piece of the American West's storied past. We stopped at the inaugural Grafton Monster Festival in Grafton, West Virginia. It was a highly anticipated event celebrating the 60th anniversary of the first reported sighting of the Grafton Monster. Scheduled for June 15-16, the festival offers a variety of activities and attractions that cater to all ages.
Vendors, live music, speakers, and art exhibits line downtown Grafton. One of the highlights is the cryptid cosplay contest, where attendees can dress up as their favorite cryptid. Additionally, a Father’s Day cornhole tournament and a Grafton Monster-themed scavenger hunt were planned, ensuring fun for the whole family.
The festival coincides with the grand opening of the Grafton Monster Museum, located inside the Black Cat Rookery Book Store and Curiosities at 107 W Main Street. This museum will offer visitors an in-depth look at the history and lore surrounding the Grafton Monster, featuring various exhibits and artifacts. Unfortunately the museum was still under renovation and will open later this year and we will be back for that event.
The Grafton Monster, often described as a large, white, headless creature with "seal-like" skin, was first reported in 1964 by journalist Robert Cockrell. His sighting has since spawned numerous reports and a rich local legend, making the monster a beloved figure in West Virginia folklore.
The festival aims to celebrate this unique part of Grafton’s heritage while providing an engaging and entertaining experience for visitors. Whether you're a cryptid enthusiast or just looking for a unique way to spend the weekend, the Grafton Monster Festival promises to be an unforgettable event.
The Grafton Monster, a local legend from West Virginia, has gained significant attention due to its inclusion in the popular video game "Fallout 76." In the game, the Grafton Monster is depicted as a large, headless, and muscular creature, closely resembling the descriptions from the 1964 sighting by Robert Cockrell. This in-game representation has brought the legend to a wider audience, blending local folklore with the game's post-apocalyptic setting, and enhancing the eerie atmosphere that fans of the series enjoy.
"Fallout 76" uses the Grafton Monster to enrich its world-building, adding depth and local color to its West Virginia setting. Players encounter the creature in various parts of the game, often facing it in combat scenarios. This inclusion not only serves as a nod to local myths but also helps to create a more immersive and engaging experience for players. By integrating such regional legends, "Fallout 76" successfully merges real-world folklore with its fictional universe, appealing to both gamers and cryptid enthusiasts alike.
West Virginia is home to numerous cryptids that have fascinated locals and cryptozoologists alike. One of the most famous is the Mothman, a large, winged humanoid reportedly seen in Point Pleasant in the late 1960s. Described as having glowing red eyes and a wingspan of about 10 feet, the Mothman became a symbol of mystery and intrigue, further popularized by the book and movie "The Mothman Prophecies." The Mothman sightings culminated with the tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967, which some link to the creature's ominous presence.
Another intriguing West Virginian cryptid is the Flatwoods Monster, also known as the Braxton County Monster. In 1952, several residents of Flatwoods reported seeing a strange, tall creature with glowing eyes and a hood-like shape hovering above the ground. Accompanied by a strong metallic odor and mist, the encounter spurred widespread media coverage and various theories about its origins, ranging from extraterrestrial to secret government experiments. These stories, along with others like the Sheepsquatch and the Snarly Yow, contribute to West Virginia's rich tapestry of cryptid folklore.
We also met Spirit Walk Paranormal and discussed some of their upcoming adventures and ghost hunts. Go check them out if you enjoy the paranormal and things that go bump in the night.

We haven't been to this roadside attraction since 2012. We decided to stop again since this was long before I started doing videos and was on the way to our next stop. Glad we stopped! Got some drinks and fudge.
Ozarkland General Store, nestled in the heart of Sarcoxie, Missouri, stands as a beacon of nostalgia, community, and old-fashioned charm. With its weathered wooden facade and inviting atmosphere, this iconic establishment embodies the essence of small-town America. From its humble beginnings to its enduring legacy, Ozarkland General Store has been a beloved fixture in the lives of locals and visitors alike for decades.
The history of Ozarkland General Store traces back to the early 20th century when it was established as a modest trading post serving the needs of the surrounding rural community. Over the years, as Sarcoxie grew and evolved, so too did the store, expanding its offerings to meet the changing demands of its customers. What started as a simple supply depot soon blossomed into a full-fledged emporium, stocking everything from groceries and hardware to clothing and household goods.
Step through the creaking wooden doors of Ozarkland General Store, and you'll be transported back in time to an era when life moved at a slower pace and neighbors greeted each other by name. The interior exudes warmth and character, with shelves lined with an eclectic assortment of goods and the scent of freshly brewed coffee lingering in the air. It's a place where time seems to stand still, and the stresses of modern life melt away.
One of the store's most endearing qualities is its commitment to preserving the traditions of the past while embracing the conveniences of the present. While you can still find old-fashioned candies and handcrafted goods, you'll also discover a selection of modern amenities, including a deli counter serving up delicious sandwiches and a coffee bar brewing up specialty blends from locally roasted beans.
But perhaps the true heart of Ozarkland General Store lies in its role as a gathering place for the community. It's not just a place to shop; it's a place to connect with friends and neighbors, to swap stories and share laughter. Whether you're stopping in for a quick errand or lingering over a cup of coffee with friends, you'll always find a warm welcome at Ozarkland.
In addition to its role as a community hub, Ozarkland General Store also plays a vital role in supporting local artisans and producers. The shelves are stocked with a diverse array of products sourced from nearby farms and workshops, showcasing the rich bounty of the Ozarks region. By championing local talent and craftsmanship, the store helps to preserve the unique character of the area and ensure its continued prosperity for generations to come.
Despite its small-town charm, Ozarkland General Store has not been immune to the challenges of the modern world. In an age of big-box retailers and online shopping, it has had to adapt and innovate to stay relevant. Yet, through it all, it has remained true to its roots, steadfastly serving its loyal customer base with integrity and dedication.
As you leave Ozarkland General Store, your arms laden with bags of groceries and your heart full of memories, you can't help but feel grateful for this timeless institution. In a rapidly changing world, it's comforting to know that there are still places like this, where the simple pleasures of life are celebrated, and the spirit of community thrives. For anyone passing through Sarcoxie, a visit to Ozarkland General Store is not just a shopping trip – it's an experience to be cherished and savored.

As I eagerly awaited the solar eclipse on April 8th in Barbourville, Kentucky, I felt like a kid on Christmas morning, except instead of presents, I was expecting a celestial spectacle. Armed with my special eclipse glasses and trusty camera, I was ready to capture this rare event for posterity. Little did I know, the universe had a comedic twist in store for me.
As the day dawned, excitement bubbled within me like a freshly shaken soda bottle. I set up my camera, adjusted the focus, and donned my eclipse glasses with all the determination of an astronaut suiting up for a spacewalk. I was determined to get the perfect shot, one that would make National Geographic jealous.
However, as luck would have it, the weather decided to play a prank on me. Dark clouds loomed ominously overhead, threatening to block out the main event. "Surely, this can't be happening," I muttered to myself, feeling like the protagonist in a cheesy disaster movie.
Undeterred, I kept my camera rolling, hoping for a break in the clouds. But as the eclipse reached its peak, it seemed like the heavens had conspired against me. The clouds thickened, obscuring the sun and casting a gloomy shadow over my hopes of capturing the perfect shot.
Desperate times call for desperate measures, they say. So, like a true Kentucky MacGyver, I improvised. I tried to peer through the clouds with my eclipse glasses, squinting like a mole emerging from its burrow. Alas, all I could see was a faint, hazy outline of what might have been the sun.
As I reviewed the footage later, hoping against hope for a miracle, reality hit me like a ton of bricks. My video resembled something between a blurry mess and a lost episode of "The X-Files." Instead of a majestic solar eclipse, all I had captured was a pixelated blob obscured by clouds, with occasional appearances by what could have been the sun.
Defeated but not broken, I couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. Here I was, armed with all the latest technology and gear, only to be foiled by a bunch of water vapor and a thick layer of cumulus. It was like bringing a bazooka to a water balloon fight.
But you know what they say: laughter is the best medicine. And as I chuckled at the cosmic joke played on me that day, I realized that sometimes, the funniest moments are the ones that don't go according to plan. So here's to you, Barbourville, Kentucky, and your mischievous weather patterns. You may have won this round, but I'll be back, camera in hand, ready to take on whatever celestial shenanigans you throw my way.

The events of that fateful day unfolded with terrifying speed. Armed with firearms and homemade explosives, the perpetrators stormed the school, leaving chaos and devastation in their wake. Students and teachers found themselves trapped in a nightmare as gunfire echoed through the hallways and classrooms. In the hours that followed, the world watched in horror as the full extent of the tragedy became apparent. When the dust settled, 12 students and one teacher had lost their lives, and many others were left injured physically and emotionally.
The aftermath of the Columbine High School tragedy was profound and far-reaching. It sparked an outpouring of grief and mourning from across the nation as communities struggled to come to terms with the senseless loss of life. Candlelight vigils, memorial services, and moments of silence were held to honor the victims and offer support to those affected by the tragedy. The Columbine Memorial, dedicated in 2007, stands as a permanent reminder of the lives lost and the resilience of the community.
In the wake of the shooting, questions arose about the factors that contributed to such a horrific act of violence. Conversations about mental health, bullying, and the impact of violent media consumed public discourse. The search for answers led to changes in school security protocols, with many institutions implementing measures such as surveillance cameras, metal detectors, and active shooter drills to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
Furthermore, the Columbine High School shooting reignited the debate surrounding gun control in the United States. Advocates called for stricter gun laws to prevent individuals with malicious intent from obtaining firearms, while opponents argued for the protection of Second Amendment rights. The issue remains contentious to this day, with little consensus on how best to address gun violence in America.
Despite the passage of time, the memory of the Columbine High School tragedy continues to loom large in the collective consciousness. Each year, on the anniversary of the shooting, communities come together to remember the victims and reflect on the enduring impact of the tragedy. For survivors, families of the victims, and the wider community, the pain of that day remains raw, serving as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of coming together in times of adversity.
As we mark the 25th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting, we honor the memory of those who lost their lives and pay tribute to the resilience of the survivors and the community. May we never forget the lessons learned from this tragedy and continue striving to create a safer and more compassionate world for future generations.

Robert Stroud, famously known as the Birdman of Alcatraz, was an enigmatic figure whose life journey was as tumultuous as it was fascinating. Born on January 28, 1890, in Seattle, Washington, Stroud's early life was marked by hardship and rebellion. His troubled youth saw him frequently in trouble with the law, and by the age of 18, he had already amassed a record of arrests for various offenses, including theft and assault.
However, it was in 1909 that Robert Stroud's life took a drastic turn when he murdered a bartender who had allegedly refused to pay a prostitute whom Stroud was pimping. Sentenced to 12 years in prison, Stroud's violent temper and defiance led to numerous clashes with prison authorities. His time in Leavenworth Penitentiary would become the backdrop for the transformation that would later immortalize him in popular culture.
It was during his incarceration in Leavenworth that Stroud's fascination with birds began. Denied access to the general prison population due to his violent behavior, Stroud found solace in caring for injured birds he found in the prison yard. He devoted himself to their care, studying their behavior, and even conducting rudimentary experiments. His avian studies gained him recognition among ornithologists, who were astonished by the depth of his knowledge and the quality of his writings on the subject.
Despite his newfound passion, Stroud's violent tendencies persisted, and in 1916, he murdered a guard in a fit of rage. Sentenced to death, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment by President Woodrow Wilson. Stroud's reputation as a dangerous inmate led to his transfer to the notorious Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary in 1942, where he would spend the rest of his days.
It was during his time in Alcatraz that Stroud's reputation as the Birdman truly took flight. Denied access to his beloved birds, Stroud began writing extensively on avian diseases and their treatment, ultimately publishing two books on the subject. His expertise garnered him admiration from fellow inmates and even some prison officials, who saw value in his research.
Despite his newfound purpose, Stroud's life remained one of isolation and confinement. He spent over 17 years in solitary confinement, a punishment for his continued defiance of prison regulations. Yet, even in the confines of his cell, Stroud's passion for birds never waned. He transformed his cell into a makeshift aviary, caring for sparrows, canaries, and even a few finches.
Robert Stroud's story is one of contradictions—a man capable of great violence, yet possessing a deep compassion for living creatures. His legacy as the Birdman of Alcatraz endures, immortalized in books, films, and popular culture. After serving over 54 years in prison, Stroud was transferred to the Medical Center for Federal Prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, where he died on November 21, 1963, at the age of 73.
Despite his notoriety, Stroud's final resting place is far from the confines of Alcatraz or Leavenworth. He was buried in Metropolis, Illinois, in the family plot alongside his mother and father. The simplicity of his grave belies the complexity of his life—a life marked by violence, redemption, and an unwavering love for the birds that brought solace amidst the chaos. Today, visitors to Metropolis can pay their respects to the Birdman, a man whose story continues to captivate and intrigue generations.

The Adair Train Robbery, an infamous event in the annals of Wild West history, serves as a captivating chapter in the legend of Jesse James. Occurring on the chilly night of July 21, 1873, near the small town of Adair, Iowa, this audacious heist solidified Jesse James' reputation as a daring outlaw and mastermind of train robberies.
At the time, Jesse James, along with his notorious gang known as the James-Younger Gang, had already established a fearsome reputation for their brazen robberies across the Midwest. The gang, which included Jesse's brother Frank James and other notorious outlaws such as Cole Younger, had been implicated in a series of daring raids on banks, stagecoaches, and trains.
The target of the Adair Train Robbery was a Rock Island Railroad train carrying a substantial amount of cash intended for various businesses and banks in the region. The gang meticulously planned the heist, selecting a remote stretch of track near Adair that provided ideal conditions for their operation. Under the cover of darkness, the outlaws set their plan in motion.
As the train approached Adair, the gang sprang into action, swiftly overpowering the train crew and securing control of the locomotive and its valuable cargo. Armed with revolvers and rifles, the bandits efficiently disarmed any resistance from the train's crew and passengers, ensuring their dominance over the situation.
With the train under their command, Jesse James and his gang proceeded to ransack the express car, where they seized the cash and valuables stored within. Despite the chaos and confusion of the robbery, the outlaws maintained control of the situation, executing their plan with precision and efficiency.
However, the Adair Train Robbery did not proceed entirely without incident. During the course of the robbery, a member of the train crew, conductor Westfall, was tragically killed by a gunshot wound, adding a grim element to an already tense and violent situation.
Following the successful heist, Jesse James and his gang made their escape into the cover of night, disappearing into the darkness with their ill-gotten gains. The brazen nature of the Adair Train Robbery shocked the region and captured the imagination of the public, further solidifying Jesse James' status as a legendary outlaw figure.
In the aftermath of the robbery, law enforcement agencies launched extensive efforts to apprehend Jesse James and his gang, but the outlaws proved elusive, evading capture and continuing their criminal exploits across the Midwest.
Despite the passage of time, the Adair Train Robbery remains a compelling chapter in the saga of Jesse James and the Wild West. The daring and audacious nature of the heist, coupled with its tragic consequences, ensures that the legend of Jesse James and his notorious gang will endure for generations to come.

Constructed in 1987 by artist Jim Reinders as a memorial to his father, Carhenge has since become a beloved symbol of American eccentricity and creativity. The installation consists of 38 automobiles, trucks, and other vehicles, all painted gray to resemble the original stones of Stonehenge. These vehicles are arranged to align with the solstices and equinoxes, just like the astronomical alignments of its ancient counterpart.
Carhenge stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of its creator, who used classic cars from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s to replicate the imposing monoliths of Stonehenge. The cars are partially buried in the ground, with their upright positions mimicking the standing stones of the original structure. Some of the vehicles are placed on their sides or stacked on top of each other to recreate the varying heights found in the original Stonehenge.
Visitors to Carhenge are greeted by this surreal sight as they approach the site, situated on the open plains of western Nebraska. The juxtaposition of the rusting cars against the vast expanse of the prairie landscape creates a striking visual contrast, making Carhenge a truly memorable experience for those who make the journey to see it.
In addition to the main installation, Carhenge also features several other sculptures and artworks made from cars and car parts, adding to the quirky charm of the site. Visitors can explore these additional pieces as they wander through the surrounding area, taking in the creativity and whimsy of Reinders' vision.
Over the years, Carhenge has become more than just a roadside curiosity – it has evolved into a cultural landmark and a symbol of American pop art. It has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and commercials, further cementing its place in popular culture.
The site has also become a popular venue for events and gatherings, ranging from weddings and music festivals to car shows and art exhibitions. Each year, thousands of visitors flock to Carhenge to marvel at its unique beauty and to celebrate its quirky spirit.
In 2017, Carhenge was added to the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its significance as a cultural landmark and a testament to human creativity. This designation ensures that Carhenge will be preserved for future generations to enjoy and appreciate.
In conclusion, Carhenge is more than just a roadside attraction – it is a testament to human creativity and ingenuity, a celebration of American pop art, and a beloved cultural landmark. Its unique blend of whimsy and spectacle continues to captivate visitors from around the world, making it a must-see destination for anyone traveling through the heartland of America.

Its been 5 long years since we said goodbye at Parkette. Now on our adventures, we gather and look at what this legend of a man has been up to. We take a journey looking at the film parodies that he could have been in, but wasn't. Its always a pleasure meeting up with our friend and hope we get to see him and his family again soon in 2024. Maybe we could partake in some Rocky Mountain Oysters in Buckhorn Saloon, or do a South Park extravaganza in Casa Bonita. Where ever we go, it will be a good time.

Mickey Mantle, one of the most iconic figures in American sports history, rose to fame as a baseball legend during his illustrious career with the New York Yankees. But before he became the "Commerce Comet," he was a young boy from humble beginnings in Commerce, Oklahoma. His boyhood home in Commerce serves as a poignant reminder of his roots and the journey that led him to baseball immortality.
Born on October 20, 1931, in Spavinaw, Oklahoma, Mantle moved with his family to Commerce at a young age. The town, nestled in the northeastern corner of the state, provided the backdrop for his formative years. Life in Commerce during the early 20th century was characterized by its rural charm and close-knit community atmosphere. The Mantle family, like many others in the area, worked hard to make ends meet, with Mickey's father, Mutt Mantle, holding various jobs to support his family.
Mickey's upbringing in Commerce was marked by the simple pleasures of small-town life. He spent his days playing baseball with friends in makeshift sandlot games, honing the skills that would later catapult him to stardom. Despite facing economic challenges, Mickey was surrounded by a supportive family and community that nurtured his passion for the game.
The Mantle family home, a modest structure on South Quincy Street, holds a special place in baseball history. It was within these walls that Mickey's love for baseball flourished, fueled by the encouragement of his father and the dreams of a young boy determined to make it to the big leagues. The house, now a cherished landmark, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of a hometown hero.
Mickey's time in Commerce was not without its hardships. At the age of four, he contracted osteomyelitis, a serious bone infection that nearly cost him his leg. Thanks to pioneering medical treatment and the unwavering support of his family, Mickey overcame this setback and went on to achieve greatness on the baseball diamond. His resilience in the face of adversity would become a defining trait throughout his life and career.
In 1948, Mantle's talent caught the attention of professional scouts, leading to his signing with the New York Yankees organization. While his departure from Commerce marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life, the lessons learned and memories forged in his hometown remained with him always. Despite achieving superstardom in the big city, Mickey never forgot his roots, frequently returning to Commerce to visit family and friends.
Mantle's impact on the game of baseball transcended his on-field accomplishments. As a switch-hitting powerhouse with prodigious power and unmatched speed, he captivated fans with his electrifying play and larger-than-life persona. Throughout his 18-year career with the Yankees, Mantle amassed a staggering array of accolades, including 536 home runs, seven World Series championships, and three MVP awards.
Off the field, Mickey struggled with personal demons, including alcoholism, which tarnished his reputation in later years. Despite these challenges, he remained a beloved figure in the hearts of baseball fans everywhere, cherished for his incredible talent and the indelible mark he left on the sport.
Mickey Mantle passed away on August 13, 1995, but his legacy lives on in the memories of those who witnessed his greatness and the countless lives he touched along the way. From his humble beginnings in Commerce, Oklahoma, to the hallowed halls of Yankee Stadium, Mantle's journey serves as an inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere, a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and the enduring spirit of America's pastime.

James Baskett, born on February 16, 1904, in Indianapolis, Indiana, was a trailblazing African American actor, best known for his groundbreaking role in the film "Song of the South." His life and career are noteworthy for the challenges he overcame in the racially segregated entertainment industry of his time.
Baskett's early life was marked by a passion for performing arts. He attended Butler University and began his career as a performer in minstrel shows and vaudeville. Despite the racial barriers present in the entertainment industry during the 1920s and 1930s, Baskett's talent and charisma quickly gained attention.
In 1945, Baskett achieved a historic milestone when he was cast by Walt Disney to portray Uncle Remus in "Song of the South." This film, released in 1946, combined live-action and animation, and was based on the stories of Joel Chandler Harris. Baskett's portrayal of Uncle Remus was groundbreaking, as he became the first African American male to receive an Academy Award nomination. He was recognized with an Honorary Academy Award in 1948 for his "able and heartwarming characterization of Uncle Remus, friend and storyteller to the children of the world."
"Song of the South" is a controversial film that has been both praised for its technical achievements and criticized for its handling of racial themes. The movie is set on a Southern plantation after the Civil War, and Uncle Remus, played by Baskett, serves as a storyteller and mentor to the young protagonist. The animated sequences feature characters like Br'er Rabbit and Br'er Fox, bringing Harris's tales to life.
The film's treatment of race has been a subject of debate and criticism. While some argue that it perpetuates harmful stereotypes, others contend that Baskett's performance as Uncle Remus provided a nuanced and dignified portrayal, considering the limitations and prejudices of the time. Despite its mixed reception, "Song of the South" is a significant part of film history, showcasing Baskett's exceptional talent and contributing to the evolution of animation.
James Baskett's success in "Song of the South" did not erase the racial challenges he faced in Hollywood. He continued to experience limited opportunities for roles that went beyond stereotypical portrayals. Nonetheless, he persevered, and his work paved the way for future generations of African American actors in the entertainment industry.
Tragically, Baskett's life was cut short when he succumbed to heart disease on July 9, 1948, at the age of 44. Despite the challenges he faced, James Baskett's contributions to film, particularly in "Song of the South," remain significant. His legacy is a testament to his talent, resilience, and the importance of recognizing the pioneers who broke barriers in the face of adversity.

It took a little time to do this video since he passed away. We never had a pet die this young, so this was a little hard for us to grasp. Loki was born with a disease that the red blood cells kept attacking the white blood cells and unfortunately the medicine we received from the vet's office did not help him.
AIHA - Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia
Autoimmune means an immune reaction directed against the body's own tissues, while hemolysis comes from the Greek words “hemo”, meaning blood, and “lysis”, meaning to break open. Autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) is an immune system disease in which the body attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. With primary AIHA, the cat's immune system is not working properly and it incorrectly makes antibodies that target its own red blood cells. Primary AIHA is uncommon in cats.
In cats with AIHA, red blood cells are still being manufactured in the bone marrow, but once released into circulation, they have a shorter-than-normal life span.
This disease may also be called immune-mediated hemolytic anemia or IMHA.
Even though he was only with us a short time, we loved him. Loki, mommy and daddy loves you!

In Fairmount, Dean developed a passion for acting and participated in numerous school plays and local theater productions. His talent and dedication were evident even then, setting the stage for his future success in Hollywood. After graduating from Fairmount High School, Dean moved to California to pursue his dream of becoming an actor. He enrolled in the prestigious Actors Studio in New York City, where he honed his craft and gained valuable experience in the theater.
Dean's breakthrough came with his role in the 1955 film "East of Eden," directed by Elia Kazan. His powerful performance as Cal Trask earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role, catapulting him to stardom. This was followed by another iconic role in the film "Rebel Without a Cause" (1955), where he portrayed the troubled teenager Jim Stark. The film resonated with young audiences, capturing the essence of teenage rebellion and the search for identity.

The accident occurred near Cholame, California, while Dean was driving his Porsche 550 Spyder to a racing event in Salinas. His untimely death shocked the world and left a void in the film industry. Despite his brief career, Dean's impact on cinema and popular culture was profound, and he became a symbol of youthful rebellion and nonconformity.
In the years following his death, James Dean's legacy only grew stronger. His three major films – "East of Eden," "Rebel Without a Cause," and "Giant" (1956) – continue to be celebrated for their emotional depth and Dean's exceptional acting abilities. He remains an enduring cultural icon, inspiring generations of actors and filmmakers. Fairmount, Indiana, the town where Dean spent his formative years, has become a pilgrimage site for fans and enthusiasts, who visit the James Dean Gallery and the actor's grave in the local cemetery.

Since its opening in 1909, this elegant colonial revival-style hotel has not only served as a luxurious retreat for the elite but has also gained international fame for its rich history, breathtaking architecture, and eerie paranormal occurrences. However, what truly sets the Stanley Hotel apart from other luxurious retreats is its eerie association with the supernatural, famously inspiring Stephen King’s masterpiece, ‘The Shining’.
The Stanley Hotel, commissioned by Freelan O. Stanley, a wealthy entrepreneur, and inventor, was designed by architect F.O. Stanley himself. With its stunning Georgian architecture, the hotel boasts 142 meticulously designed rooms, each exuding an air of timeless elegance. Visitors are greeted by the grandeur of the hotel’s lobby, adorned with Victorian-style furniture, vintage chandeliers, and a welcoming ambiance that transports them back to the early 20th century.
The hotel gained unprecedented notoriety when the master of horror, Stephen King, checked in for a night in 1974. For paranormal enthusiasts, the Stanley Hotel is a haven of ghostly encounters. Numerous guests and staff have reported strange phenomena, from flickering lights and disembodied whispers to ghostly apparitions. One of the most famous ghosts is that of F.O. Stanley himself, who is said to roam the halls, checking on guests as if he never left the hotel he loved dearly. The echoes of past guests and employees, whose energies seem imprinted in the very walls of the hotel, add to its enigmatic allure.
Visitors to the Stanley Hotel can indulge in more than just paranormal curiosity. The hotel offers a range of amenities and experiences, from fine dining at the Cascades Restaurant, where exquisite cuisine meets unparalleled views of the Rocky Mountains, to guided historical tours that unveil the secrets and stories behind the hotel’s intriguing past. While the paranormal activity is undeniably one of the Stanley Hotel’s major attractions, its charm goes beyond the ghostly encounters. The Stanley Film Center, an upcoming addition, promises to be a haven for cinephiles, celebrating the intersection of film, literature, and the supernatural.

Alfred Packer: The Cannibal's Grave in Littleton, Colorado
Nestled in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, amidst the breathtaking beauty of Littleton, Colorado, lies a haunting tale from the American frontier: the chilling saga of Alfred Packer, the infamous Cannibal of Colorado. In the winter of 1874, Packer and a group of pioneers, enticed by the allure of gold, embarked on a perilous expedition into the rugged wilderness. Their journey would ultimately lead to a desperate struggle for survival, culminating in an unimaginable act that would forever etch Packer’s name in the annals of true crime.
The ill-fated expedition, which began in the mining town of Lake City, Colorado, was destined for disaster from the start. A group of prospectors, including Israel Swan, Shannon Bell, George Noon, James Humphrey, and Frank Miller, accompanied Packer on this treacherous journey. As they ventured deeper into the unforgiving wilderness, they encountered harsh weather, dwindling supplies, and the constant threat of starvation.
Trapped by heavy snowfall near the present-day town of Lake City, the group faced a grim reality. In the absence of sufficient provisions, desperation set in, and survival instincts took a macabre turn. According to later accounts, Packer, driven by hunger and desperation, allegedly resorted to cannibalism, consuming the flesh of his deceased companions to stay alive.
When the spring thaw came, the remnants of the expedition were discovered, revealing a gruesome scene of bones and human remains. The horrifying revelation shocked the nation and led to Packer’s arrest. His trial, held in Lake City, became a sensational event, capturing the public's morbid fascination. Packer was convicted of manslaughter, not murder, due to the extenuating circumstances of his ordeal. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Fast forward to the present day, and the legacy of Alfred Packer lives on, not only in the historical accounts but also in the very soil of Littleton, Colorado. His final resting place, marked by a simple gravestone, serves as a grim reminder of the darkest depths of human desperation and the horrifying choices people can make when pushed to their limits.
Visitors who brave the journey to Packer’s grave often find themselves immersed in a tale that blurs the lines between reality and nightmare. The site is a pilgrimage for history enthusiasts and those drawn to the macabre, offering a glimpse into a past marred by tragedy and cannibalism.
Lake City, the starting point of this ill-fated expedition, also plays a significant role in this haunting narrative. Today, it stands as a living testament to the events that unfolded during that treacherous winter. Visitors to Lake City can explore its rich history, imagining the pioneers’ excitement and trepidation as they set out on their ill-fated journey. The town’s streets echo with whispers of the past, inviting travelers to reflect on the resilience of the human spirit and the harrowing choices made in the pursuit of survival.
Reflecting on the individuals who fell victim to this gruesome episode – Israel Swan, Shannon Bell, George Noon, James Humphrey, and Frank Miller – adds a poignant layer to the story. These were ordinary men, drawn by the promise of wealth and adventure, who met a tragic and horrifying end. Their names, once forgotten by many, have become symbols of the human cost of frontier life, forever associated with the infamous Cannibal of Colorado.
Alfred Packer's tale serves as a cautionary reminder, not only of the brutality that can arise in extreme circumstances but also of the fragile nature of civilization. It forces us to confront the primal instincts that lie dormant within us all, reminding us that the line between humanity and savagery is thinner than we might like to believe.
As visitors stand before the grave of Alfred Packer, they are confronted not only with the gruesome details of his story but also with a broader narrative of human endurance and the depths of desperation. It is a place where the past merges with the present, inviting contemplation on the complexities of the human condition and the choices we make when faced with life and death situations.
Their story, though macabre, offers a profound opportunity for reflection, challenging us to empathize with the unimaginable horrors they faced and encouraging us to appreciate the comforts and security of the modern world.
