I recorded these from the original source files (IT format) and mastered them with some EQ, reverb, and compression.
There is an authentic hardware recording of this OST on another channel if you want to hear the music with the signature DS sound:

For this project, my contract was to re-sequence James Hannigan's original compositions (and a couple of the film songs) for use on the DS. Most songs came down to around 300-400KB before compression. Thankfully I had access to the MIDI files... my talent for figuring out songs by ear would have been stretched to its limit without them.
This remaster is from the source files (IT format) which were eventually converted to work on the DS. They were recorded at CD quality then given a bit of reverb, EQ, and dynamics. This was one of the last DS games I worked on, and I think it represents the height of my ability to squeeze an orchestral sound onto the DS sound chip.

The goal was to get CD's professionally printed and sell copies from my website. I had liner notes and a cover designed, though those files seem to be lost to time unfortunately. I didn't end up pressing the CD's, probably because I was saving up for the cost of the first run. They never really got released. I think when I made the move to Buzz, the sound quality of the new songs overshadowed these older tracks, and I didn't feel like they represented my best work. Since I was trying to get my composing career off the ground, I never distributed them.
It's really only because of the positive response I got from my earlier mod files that I'm willing to post these. I appreciate everyone's kind words about songs I have long considered "best left in the archives."

This was my entry into the tracking competition "MC5", and my only participation in a contest (compo, as they were called) during my tracking days. I think I placed around the middle of the pack in the veterans division, which I was proud of at the time given that just about all the top talents participated. One of my judges was none other than Skaven, and his feedback was really helpful.
Composed in Impulse Tracker, video recorded from OpenMPT
20 channels, 1.2MB
Vocal sample is from "Pulse" by Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus soundtrack)
Composed in 1997 in Impulse Tracker

Video recorded in OpenMPT, no mastering effects used
I'm not sure why I didn't publish this one, it's actually pretty good for that era. Sounds a bit sad though. I wonder if it's a reflection of how I was feeling around then? Shows a pretty good skill level with tracking, especially instrument design, mixing, panning, and not having every channel competing for volume. You can always tell the "main part" of the song by finding pattern 0 in the top bar... even to this day, this is how I write music: polish a four-bar segment, then build everything around it.
Composed in 1995 in ScreamTracker 3
13 channels, 125KB

Moving from general midi to track, I became obsessed with the pitch gliding command Gxx, something that's virtually impossible to do in midi, and sounds amazing with echo channels. Seems like I didn't know how to set panning directly in each channel, because to center the drums, I copied the notes into two channels so they would play simultaneously. Good thing mods are sample-perfect or this would have created some fun phasing effects.
Written in 1996 in Impulse Tracker
8 channels, 197KB
Video recorded using OpenMPT, no mastering effects
This one got some good feedback from friends back in the day. Still a pretty solid melody. My mixing skills were in the stone age, so I apologize to headphones users for some of the extreme panning. Hey, it was how we rolled back in the day.
Composed in Impulse Tracker in 1997.
13 channels, 463KB
Video recorded in OpenMPT, with no mastering effects
Has a pretty catchy lead, and my chord progressions were improving at this point. Takes forever to get off the ground, I guess I just loved to copy/paste entire patterns back then. That tambourine is so late 90's it's ridiculous.
Composed in 1997 under my handle "RabiteMan"
18 channels, 342KB Impulse Tracker format
Recorded in OpenMPT, no mastering effects used
At this stage, I was pretty good at tracking and my composition skills were coming along as well. When I listen to my earlier work, this song included, I tend to think I put too much repetition in there, but it still holds up pretty well. Just a bonus song for any subs who wanted to hear some of the origin story. Best wishes to everyone

As for these songs here were broken down to MIDI-style sequences. The composer, Gene Rozenberg, provided me with stems (separated audio tracks) and I built custom sample collections and sequence data out of them. This fun, but labor-intensive process, involved finding the best samples to create: whole-bar loops of percussion? Individual note samples? Multi-note phrases? The resulting track sizes averaged around 200K of ROM, with even the vocal tracks coming in below 700K.
The missing tracks were included as streaming files. Though these have a much larger ROM footprint (around 1MB per minute), they probably had the space to spare for them, and it wasn't worth the cost to have me re-sequence them.
Only mastering effect used is a limiter, no EQ or reverb on this one. These are recorded from the source files from the project. The reason they sound so much cleaner than on DS is due to high quality resampling and 48Khz mixing.

I'm posting them here mainly to keep THRALL.MOD from being at the top of the channel :-)
I'm not posting this because it's something you'll want to listen to at work or while driving, but it should show that we all have to start somewhere. Between this song and now I have probably made over 1000 songs and built a career out of computer music.
(For the record, at the time I thought this song was amazing, and had lots of fun writing it.)
I can only claim composing credit on six of these tracks (marked with * below), as my esteemed colleague Steven Velema handled the lion's share of music for this project.
