Liner Notes: This is still one of my all-time favorite songs. This was both of our first visit to Scotland, and it was great to perform this song there (Fish from Marillion is Scottish). I am honored that we got to perform this in Fish's homeland on the 40th anniversary of the release of the song--that's pretty cool.
I didn't actually know the show's audio was being recorded at the time. Thanks to Ian Beresford and William Winsborough for the audience footage I used for this video (there was no video taken otherwise).
Can you hear that I was getting over a cold? A big thanks to Scott Slusher for doing this show with me. It was super fun traveling together. Scott and I are lifelong friends, so I was very grateful for his company and accompaniment. After this show, we did a day trip up to Loch Ness, and then saw Doune castle (Monty Python and the Holy Grail!) and Stirling castle on our way to Glasgow, where we attended and performed at RUSH fest. It was a great adventure. I'm glad to document this little part of it for the YouTube viewers.
Mike Massé: vocals, guitar, guitar synth, stomp pedal, tambourine
Scott Slusher: cajon
Thanks to Ovation for the beautiful new custom Adamas MD80. I love the blue sparkles!
I'm using a Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer (custom patch).
I'm playing a Wild Dog Stomp Bunyip with my left foot during the chorus, and playing a tambourine with my right foot.
I use a TC Helicon VoiceLive 3 Extreme as a doubling effect (custom patch). You can see me initiate it at the 1:15 mark in this video. I forgot to turn it off again for the final verse, but oh well.
Thanks for watching. Please Like, Comment and Share!
Love,
Mike

Liner Notes: I've been wanting to record this one for a while. Not only do a love the music, but I really appreciate the message. The lyrics were relevant and prescient in 1987, but sing with a new urgency today. "We fight the fire, while we're feeding the flame."
I'm so grateful to Gilson for contributing the drums. He also edited the Rush Fest footage and the AI footage he created. So this was a true collaboration. I met Gilson at Rush Fest, where he played drums for Karol and the Snow Dogs, the Rush tribute band for which his wife Karol is the lead singer. They were both kind hosts, showing me around and taking good care of me.
Thank you to Rob McGaughey from Universal Audio for the Sphere LX microphone. Get it at Sweetwater: sweetwater.sjv.io/xLQer5
Thanks to Nathan Mitchell for the video footage.
Thanks to Side 3 Studios for letting us film this.
Special thanks to John Pisa-Relli, my friend and fan, who financed the studio time and videographer for the three-hour video shoot.
This song will appear on Vol. 6 of "Songs for Neil" the latest in a series of Rush compilation albums that are sold as a fundraiser for cancer-related charities. This project is lovingly supervised by Steve Brown from Moving Pictures, the Scottish Rush tribute band that hosts Rush Fest Scotland. The art work is done by Hugh Syme. rushfestscotland.co.uk/album

Liner Notes:
The original Phil Collins recording of this song is one of my favorite vocal performances of all time. I wanted to pay tribute to Phil with this cover. I am so grateful for all of the musical talent he has shared with the world over the years.
I asked Gilson to play drums for this, and he completely nailed it. Both he and Bryce turned around their contributions in a day or less, once I asked. It turns out everyone loves this song. Phil Collins is one of my favorite musicians of all time (up there with Paul McCartney and Geddy Lee). I particularly appreciate his work with Genesis.
I met Gilson in Brazil when I was a musical guest at RushFest in Criciúma. Gilson was one of the organizers, and the drummer for local Rush tribute band, Karol & the Snowdogs (his wife Karol is the lead singer). Gilson and I will both be performing at RushFest in Glasgow, Scotland in early May, so I look forward to seeing him again!
Thanks to Bryce for adding his bass part!

Special thanks to MonaLisa Twins and team for filming and recording this video, along with editing the audio and video. With a more than a little help from my friends, indeed!
We recorded a cover of "Africa" that night which is posted on their channel: youtube.com/watch?v=kp6w-i5znag
We also recorded a cover of "If I Needed Someone" at their home studio, and filmed the video walking around Liverpool: youtube.com/watch?v=EhEMNoDpoVE

I think this turned out really well. Bryce and I were hoping we could capture a good performance of this song in particular, and everyone nailed it. I hope you enjoy this. It's probably my favorite Elton John song, or at least one of them. And it's one of my favorite things I've ever done.

I was in Brazil for RushFest as a special guest performer, and made time to do my own solo acoustic show in SP while in the neighborhood.
The bassist, Fernando, reached out to me, volunteering to sit in, if I wanted some local help. I could tell he was a great player by the footage he sent me, so we agreed on some songs, and off we went. We had a brief soundcheck, so most of the material we were running together for the first time during the set. I could tell he was a pro and could handle it, and it went great.
The audio you hear is direct stereo feed from the soundboard, mixed with a little audio from the camera to add some of the room sound. The vocal reverb is a bit more than necessary, but I'm sure it sounded fine in the room. I added a doubling effect on occasion from a patch I made on my TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme. You can see me trigger it from time to time with my right foot, between tambourine hits.

I've always loved this song. That whole debut album "Broadcast" by Cutting Crew is great. It was produced by Terry Brown, who had produced nearly all of Rush's stuff to that point.
