Single Pipe Pop Pop Boat Engine Lidmotor 2023-08-22 | This is a single pipe 'pop pop boat' engine. It is silent with no moving parts. Water is turned to steam in the boiler, moves down the exhaust pipe, is cooled to liquid, and then contracts back into the boiler. A thermal pulse engine of sorts is formed. The movement of the water out the straw exhaust pipe is easier than the water trying to get back up the straw and a trust force vector is produced. The boat uses this and moves forward. What is fascinating is that the water inside the engine is cycled back and forth from liquid to steam. The water is not consumed, It seems to me that as long as heat is applied and there is a way to cool the steam back into water at the exhaust ---- this pulse engine should run non stop. My First Pop Pop Boat Lidmotor 2023-08-11 | This is a simple kitchen countertop build of a 'Pop Pop Boat'. The reason I did this was because of the many builds by Grandad on this subject. The motor is a type of heat engine that is fascinating because of how it operates and produces thrust to moves the boat through the water. I just let them run unattended round the clock to see what happened. Those that stopped I examined, fixed, and then turn on again. The months and then years went by and I learned a lot. Here are a few words on what I found out after six years of observation.
Water Bottle and Toothpick Motor Part 2 Lidmotor 2023-07-08 | This is my water bottle and toothpick motor with a 3D printed PLA plastic frame. I show the motor runnnig on ambient light in my kitchen. The additional reed switch drriver has a 3.3 F 2.7v supercapacitor perloaded with 2 volts. It is unusual how the two drivers work togeter to spin the rotor faster.

Very low voltage LED driver Lidmotor 2023-06-02 | This experiment shows a low voltage .9V to 5V DC/DC voltage booster that is lighting an led at very very low input voltage. The inexpensive booster can be found on EBay or Amazon. Once started the chip will keep running way below .9V. The Thermo Electric Generator (TEG) that I am using here is a common SP1848 also found on EBay or Amazon. Soda Can Pulse Motor Lidmotor 2023-05-27 | This is a simple homemade BLDC motor using an aluminum soda can as the main structure. Because the aluminum can is a good conductor I was able to use it also as part of a 'reed switch' setup for switching the power on and off to the drive coil.. A piece of steel floral wire was used for the 'reed' part of the switch.

Semi - levitated magnetic bearing Lidmotor 2023-05-11 | I am working with bearing friction on my long running projects. One way to reduce the friction is to take the weight off the bearing surface. Here I look at a semi - levitation permanent magnet method acting on a single point contact bearing surface. Dirt getting into the bearing is another cause of increased friction. Putting the bearing surface under cover is an easy solution. The materials used on the bearing and the type of lubrication are also very imporant on the small low power motors I build.

Grandads Emoji Magnet Motor Lidmotor 2023-03-15 | This is a replication of a motor by Grandad where he used 'Emoji magnets' on the rotor. The magnets are weak and heavy and he had difficulty getting his to run. I was able to get mine to run and it was a fun project. Hauling out an old sailboat for bottom painting Lidmotor 2022-10-30 | This year we took our 32' sailboat 'Kapalua' out of the water and had the anti-fouling paint job done. It is a hard task but has to be done every 3 to 5 years. Where we live the boats are left in the water all year and a diver cleans the marine growth off once a month. Eventually the paint is rubbed off and then the boat has to be hauled out and repainted. It is a long tough job. Our boat is a 1974 Challenger 32 cruising sailboat built for open ocean passages. The name Kapalua is Hawaiian for 'arms embracing the sea'. It is a location on the island of Maui in Hawaii.
