The device combines low-power LED illumination with real-time brightness control and full ASCOM Alpaca compatibility, enabling seamless automation through capture software like NINA.FlatAF is a compact, battery powered, Wi-Fi controlled flat panel designed for astrophotographers who need reliable and portable calibration tools in the field or at home. It supports full ASCOM Alpaca integration for automated capture software such as NINA, while also allowing manual control through a browser interface or via a single onboard button. The device is built for portability and resilience, featuring a light tight enclosure, low power consumption, and optional 3D printed mounting solutions. The entire project is fully open source and extensively documented for those who want to build, customize, or improve it.The system is composed of two main software components. The first is FlatAF_Alpaca, a cross-platform ASCOM Alpaca driver written in Python using the Alpyca framework. The time involved in an astrophotography project depends on a range of factors: target distance, size, and brightness; your Bortle scale and local sky conditions. You’ll also need to consider your mount’s tracking and guiding capabilities, and the optical speed of your imaging system.These variables influence not only how long you need to capture data, but also how you might configure your optical train; such as adding a reducer to widen your field of view and accelerate your f-ratio. But that’s only part of the story. In many cases, your ability to go deep may simply be limited by your schedule, weather, or travel constraints.Much of this knowledge comes not from tutorials or specs, but from direct experience. You learn how your gear behaves as a system under your skies, and when it’s worth chasing depth versus maximizing speed.In astrophotography, “fast” refers to your imaging system’s focal ratio, or f-ratio. This is calculated by dividing the focal length of your telescope by the diameter of its aperture. Going deep in astrophotography means committing to long integration times to push your signal-to-noise ratio as far as possible. This often involves using higher focal ratios.Sometimes it’s about capturing something meaningful in a single night. Other times it’s about digging deeper and watching an image take shape over weeks. Easy Steps To Awesome Nebula Photos Anyone Can Try! AstroAF 2025-07-21 | In astrophotography, a palette refers to the method by which an imager assigns individual data channels to the red, green, and blue components of a final color image. These channels can originate from broadband filters that approximate visible light, or from narrowband filters that isolate specific emission lines within the visible spectrum. Regardless of the source, the palette determines how those channels are blended to create an image that is both scientifically meaningful and aesthetically pleasing.In narrowband imaging the imager collects light from very specific emission lines — such as sulfur-II (SII) at approximately 672 nm, hydrogen-alpha (Ha) at approximately 656 nm, and oxygen-III (OIII) at approximately 501 nm — each of which represents a narrow slice of the visible spectrum. When using a monochrome camera, the photographer captures each of these channels separately through dedicated filters, resulting in individual grayscale images. These separate images must then be assigned to the red, green, and blue channels during post-processing, which introduces the creative and technical choice of which palette to apply.The FORAX palette is a custom mapping of narrowband data that rebalances the contributions of sulfur-II (SII), hydrogen-alpha (Ha), and oxygen-III (OIII) to produce an image that is both scientifically meaningful and aesthetically pleasing. And honestly — it’s not just about what’s high in the sky or seasonally visible. It’s about what speaks to me right now. Sometimes I’m craving a dusty wide-field composition. Other times, I want to explore what I can pull out of a dark nebula, or to go deep on a tight planetary nebula and see what details in narrowband I might be able to tease out of the object. Maybe I’m seeking a challenge — or maybe I’m circling back to a favorite target with new skills, new tools, or a different aesthetic in mind.It’s part gut feeling, part technical strategy. AstroAF 2025-06-23 | HyperAF is the fastest deep sky astrophotography system I’ve ever built — running at f/1.9 with full remote control and wide-field imaging. We Traveled To The Mountains To Find The Invisible Nebula AstroAF 2025-06-09 | In this video: I travel to Colorado to a Bortle 3 location with my wife, celebrating 30 years anniversary! She actually set this trip up to a Bortle 3 dark sky location to a cabin in the mountains! How excellent is that! We vlog our travel adventure and some beautiful scenery on the way out and especially in the area we were staying! A beautiful cabin nestled in the mountains at a place called Big Elk Meadows. The views were spectacular! We had a lot of cloud cover but then the skies opened up to pristine black velvet and diamonds! The Milkyway could be seen with naked eye, it was awe inspiring as it always is! I was able to get a lot of data on my dark nebula object target, LDN 700, a dark nebula in the southern reaches of Vulpecula, approximately 600 light-years from Earth. Unlike the glowing clouds of emission nebulae or the shimmering wisps of reflection nebulae, LDN 700 is defined by what it hides. It emits no visible light of its own and reflects none from nearby stars. With this new script you can multi-crop images without creating a sequence, directly from Siril’s Python layer, using a simple GUI. Features of the script include Loading FITS files, Interactive crop box placement, Save/load crop settings, Batch apply crop to entire image set, and Cancel batch operation mid-process.The script is currently available and couldn't be easier to install since AF Multi Crop is now part of the Siril core distribution script repository! NINAs Incredible Advanced API - Build An Astro Dashboard! AstroAF 2025-04-06 | I'm using NINA's incredible Advanced API to build an Astrophotography Dashboard! I go through all of the panels I've created in my own Home Assistant dashboard that uses the NINA Advanced API to make restful http GET request calls for returning information about my astrophotography sessions as well as PUT requests to set values which, for example, can control my mount. We have a look at the Advanced API docs and how to find and user the rest API as well as how to implement the API into your own dashboard.The dashboard I created has become so useful for keeping track of all kinds of different information about my sessions. I can monitor my target, my mount, my camera, I have video feeds to visually monitor my scope, I have weather information, and a set of mount controls such as emergency stop, park, and home.I hope you find this video inspirational for building your own dashboard! Mastering PERFECT Rotation For Astrophotography Sessions AstroAF 2025-03-17 | In this video I'll review my progress on quashing motes in my astrophotography optical train and then i'll show you how to get back on a past target with NINA Slew and Rotate. Watch this to get perfect alignment on previous session images, no matter if it was last night, week, or years ago. With this guide you'll be back on target with little to no stacking artifacts from rotational deviation in no time!I have been troubleshooting some issues with my narrowband red-bandwidth filters and in this video I was discussing what the problem has been. Since recording I've done research into the issue and determined that it is a phenomenon know as Etaloning which is where interference fringes or unwanted patterns appear in images or spectra due to light reflecting between parallel surfaces. These are limited to red band-widths and are appearing in my Sii and Ha filter images. Normally this is not a problem if calibration frames are able to remove them, however, in my case they have not been calibrating out. I have created an entirely new master calibration library and it also may be necessary to use dark-flats. GSS - I Bet Youve Got This Setting Wrong! Plus Bonus Chapters! AstroAF 2025-02-18 | GSS - I Bet You've Got This Setting Wrong! It blew me away when I wrapped my head around the fact that the meridian limit setting is in-addition to the meridian angle setting in the main tab options! I didn't realize that by adding time onto the meridian limit I was actually extending that amount plus the degree minutes configured in the main settings menu! Once I realized that the main setting was the value I actually wanted, simply setting the limit to 0 gave me exactly what I was looking for! I have NINA setup for flip at 10 minutes past meridian maximum which is 2.5 degrees. I have GSS setup to park the scope if for some reason NINA does not flip and it will do that at 12 minutes past meridian, which is 3 degreed. This configuration is working perfectly for me.I also have a look at guide settings in GSS as well as have a look at my progress with PHD2 and some guide logs from my latest testing with GSS and PHD2. It isn't where I want it yet but I don't think the remaining optimization is related to GSS or PHD2. I think it is time to do a 6 month tune up on the Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro and dial in the backlash and adjust the RA and DEC axes. After that, I will do some more testing and work toward getting back down into the .5 arc seconds or less range of my guiding RMS error.Also, I have been having problems with my narrowband images, primarily Ha and Sii. I finally came to the conclusion that it must be something going on with the filters themselves and I figured it was probably going to require a thorough cleaning of my image train. Since it is sub freezing temperatures here, I had to go through an acclimation process with the image train for bringing it inside as well as when I take it back out into freezing temp. I set indexes on all of the image train components so i could get back into alignment and rotation more easily on re-assembly. I took apart the image train and cleaned everything in as methodical process that I could to ensure no contamination of the optics and filters would exist when I put everything back together. Ensuring that you can put your telescope exactly where you want it and preventing it from slewing farther than what is safe are the two most important configurations you can set before proceeding with any other setup in your mount control.I show you how to configure and synchronize your home position, how to create, set, and delete park positions. Then we have a look at setting up initial limits and meridian flip angle settings. Master Green Swamp Server! The GSS Guide Youve Been Looking For! AstroAF 2025-02-03 | Master Green Swamp Server, this is the GSS guide you've been looking for!I spent many hours researching video, articles, and documentation to sort out some key aspects of Green Swamp Server configuration that were important to me. I found the information I was looking for through my research and also discussing with GSS support over on their groups.io forum. I have to say, the GSS support response is above and beyond! I have had a really great experience working out problems, mostly of my own making, with the developers in their groups channels. For example, I had an issue that ended up being a bug related to com ports which was preventing me from configuring my GPS in GSS. I spoke with the lead developer about this and once he had enough information about my problem, he created a custom patch release just for my issue and sent me the link to the installer. I installed it and my com port issue was fixed! In the latest version they have implemented this fix into the release. I installed it and GSS started up with no issues immediately! I walk through the GSS UI and show you most all of the features available in GSS and discuss initial configuration. Since my weather is bad, my scope is under cover and I couldn't yet show you actual setup and testing but I will in the next video of this series! I also looked at configuration in NINA as well as my initial setup and configuration in PHD2.Obviously, i'm looking to replace EQMOD as my primary mount control software. So far I am really impressed with GSS and I want to share with you how you can make the transition as well! To get started I think the most important first steps are to establish your park positions and home position. Next is to configure and test your slew limits to ensure you are protecting your scope from crashes into your tripod or pier. Following is the actual setup and configuration for beginning to use GSS in your sessions with NINA (or your control software of choice) and PHD2. I will be going over those things specifically in the next video, If all goes well I will also get into running an actual session, monitoring a meridian flip for any problems and seeing how guide performance is doing. I Ditched Intelligence and Still Got AMAZING Results with Siril! AstroAF 2025-01-27 | That's right! I ditched intelligence and still got amazing results with Siril, processing M33 without any AI tools! This video is having fun taking on Deep Sky Details's "The Real Intelligence Challenge: A Processing Contest". I think Dr Detail is going to enjoy torturing us requiring no great AI tools! For this contest you use data provided on DSD's github, you can find the data, rules, and information here: github.com/deepskydetail/no.ai.challengeI started out this video with a demo on some options you have for cropping multiple images to exactly the same dimensions and pixels so that you can preserve the star alignment between all the images you are working with. I walk you through cropping with conversions, sequencing, and registration in Siril. Then we have a look at getting to the same results using batch processes in Photoshop. We go through Pixelmath for performing continuum subtraction of our Red data from Hydrogen Alpha and then using even more equations to join our continuum subtracted image with our RRGB image. Additionally, we look at how we can perform a combination of luminance with our RGB image using the command line in Siril. I had to RTFM to figure this out and went through some trial and error to finally succeed in getting an LRGB result file!. Then I go through Histogram transformations, color saturations, and finishing in Photoshop Camera Raw.All in all I'm really happy with the results! 2025 Will Be Your BEST Year Yet! Happy New Year! AstroAF 2024-12-31 | In this video: I want to wish you a very Happy New Year!! 2025 will be your best year yet! 2024 was a really good year, I was able to spend a lot of time with astrophotography and all of the activities involved with it. I was able to acquire a new scope, the Celestron EdgeHD 8 and it has been a wonderful instrument for astrophotography. It did, however, come with a really steep learning curve and a ton of challenges! I took the time to rebuild my Sky-Watcher HEQ5 Pro mount and upgrade it with a Rowan belt drive kit. These upgrades were in the effort to improve guiding that I needed for the longer focal length of the EdgeHD and it really worked out! I got to take a dark sky trip to New Mexico to camp and do astro with my friend Lance with @adventuresofshadowdog and it was a fantastic trip and we made some great memories! I worked really hard getting through issues with my optics that ended up being caused by my dew heater ring producing too much heat. I made a DIY HyperStar that I call HyperAF and it works really great! I had made information about that for members only but I plan to talk about it more publicly in 2025 when nebula season comes back around in June.I made this video as my 2024 astrophotography retrospective and as part of editing I watched these images over and over again. I'm really pleased with my year of astrophotography and I think I've grown. I know that there is always more to learn and more growth to shoot for and that is why I'm so excited to get into 2025 and really push my boundaries. It turned out that I was really interested in galactic dust and dark nebula, so I had to learn how to image and process those objects this year. In 2025 I hope to do even more from the LDN and Barnard catalogue and keep refining my skills with those object types. I'm also thinking I want to revisit some targets and start adding data to some of the ones that I really love.Again, I hope you have a very Happy New Year and your 25 greets you with health, happiness, and success in whatever it is that you do. Dark Nebula Workflow and Free Data You Can Use Right Now! AstroAF 2024-12-29 | In this video: I walk through a full processing dark nebula workflow and free data you can use right now! I have been enamored with the Barnard catalog for the past few months. I had failed on a couple attempts to capture dark nebula data that was useable but I finally have some things figured out and I'm happy with the results I'm getting! I wanted to share my processing workflow with you, along with free Barnard 13 data so you can work along with me if you would like to try your hand at processing dark nebula data! I thought it might be interesting to do something a little different, and de-compose my workflow process by working from my final finished image of Barnard 13 and step backwards through each step to the beginning. The decomposition chapter is an overview with some details. Then, I took a deeper dive and worked the processing steps forward from the beginning and show you each tool used and discuss my configurations on these tools for each of the steps.This also ended up being a @setiv2 (SetiAstro) showcase of Pixinsight scripts because these tools have become core in the tools I like to use within my workflow. What is really cool though is that a lot of these tools are available stand-alone and don't require Pixinight, or any other processing software to run within. This means that no matter what astrophotography processing software you use you can use SetiAstro tools in your workflow! I've also heard some rumors that future versions of Siril may implement SetiAstro scripts! Very Exciting indeed!I'll post some links below for SetiAstro tools so you can check them out for yourself! I've been creating YouTube content without a real dedicated space and that situation has been sub-optimal for both recording and the production quality of the content I create. I've had some viewers comment that they are unhappy with my audio quality and I have been listening. I've made improvements as i could but I knew I could do better and that would require setting up a dedicated space that is a more controlled environment that removes barriers from being productive and reduces the amount of work in setup, editing, and tear down. My new space checks off all of these boxes and while it is still new and a work in progress, I feel it is definitely leveling up in production quality of both audio and video.When I received feedback about my audio quality, I realized that I needed to care more. I've been producing videos to share this experience and hopefully help someone out there with their own astrophotography journey. But I was doing this without real attention to detail as it is difficult to produce videos and get my own astrophotography objectives done. From Dusty to Crystal Clear Optics in Less Than 30 Minutes! AstroAF 2024-11-30 | In this video: I clean the dust off my image train optics in less than 30 minutes! I recently returned from my Bortle 1 astrophotography trip to New Mexico where I camped out with @adventuresofshadowdog and we experienced camping and imaging under pristine dark skies and an amazing VLA tour! Needless to say, after traveling with my gear for thousands of miles, I needed to clean my optics before getting the rig put back together! I go through my image train cleaning process and show you the kit and accessories I use for cleaning my optics. Unforgettable Astrophotography Camping Experience! AstroAF 2024-11-23 | In this video: Lance and I continue working on our Bortle 1 astrophotography and enjoy the rest of our camping at nearly 7500' elevation in New Mexico! This was a truly unforgettable and amazing travel, camping, and astrophotography experience! I'm so glad to have had the chance to meet @adventuresofshadowdog and Shadow himself!! Shadow loves me and I can't wait to see both him and Lance again! Lance and I had a great day, spent a lot of time just relaxing around camp. We joined up for a chat around the camp fire and had a really nice time talking about astrophotography! Eventually, it was time to load up and hit the road home. Astroasis G2 Focuser Rose - Its Beautiful! After a quick unboxing I do a comparison between the Oasis G1 and the new G2 focuser rose. The G2 is more compact, introduces USB C for power and data, and still allows for 12v power input and ambient temperature monitoring.First, I go through the G1 installation process for refractor telescopes with rack and pinion and Craifford style focuser assemblies. I show the details you need to know before you start in on your own installation. Next, I walk through the process of installing the G2 on an SCT telescope, in my case the Celestron EdgeHD 8. I dissasemble the focuser down to removing the focuser shaft base plate and then re-assemble using the Astroasis SCT adapter. The Astroasis Oasis focuser has a clutch mechanism which allows you to engage and disengage the focuser motor, allowing for manual and electronic focusing without having to remove the focuser from your telescope! Destination VLA - A Guided Tour Of The Worlds Largest Radio Telescope AstroAF 2024-11-16 | In this video: Camp day 2. I was up early to take calibration frames from the previous night's astrophotography session. I show off my tent briefly and then head out to the telescope. I wanted to show you my remote power setup which worked perfectly. What Happens When You Meet Up with Friends in TOTAL Darkness? AstroAF 2024-11-11 | In this video: This is Part 1 of a 3-Part series of my Epic 2024 New Mexico Bortle 1 astrophotography total darkness adventure!! I set out West to New Mexico to meet up with my friend and YouTuber Lance @adventuresofshadowdog . For those of you that like travel logs there is a lot of content here from the road and the beautiful vistas along the way to New Mexico. I travel out of Illinois, through St. Louis, on through Missouri, and in to Oklahoma on the first day. On travel day two I get on the road to Santa Rosa, NM and enjoy the increasingly beautiful views as I head further West. On day three I leave for camp, located at Datil Well campground, for about a four hour drive. On the way to the camp site I came past the VLA and had an opportunity to stop and have a look around and get up close to a radio telescope! It was really awesome, you might be able to hear the motors running in the video and can definitely see it slewing! Camp is located in Bortle 1 skies at just over 7400' in elevation. The camp ended up being absolutely perfect and we setup for astronomy and astrophotography, each camp site having its own astronomy pad to setup your telescope.Lance and I met up in a place called Pie Town, NM. This little town has a population of under 200 and had a famous cafe called the Pie-O-Neer. He and I have been friends for quite some time but had never met. Isn't that just the greatest thing about YouTube! Getting to know people in your community, making friends, and then actually getting to meet and do really cool stuff together! It doesn't get any better than this! After lunch, we went back to the camp site and got setup. The Amazing September 2024 Supermoon & Eclipse AstroAF 2024-09-18 | This livestream is a broadcast of my session pointed at the Harvest Moon and Lunar Eclipse on September 17th, 2024. If clouds and technical challenges don’t get in the way, I’ll be planning to start about 7:30 CT and then run live for a couple of hours+. I’m going to plan on capturing a bunch of data in the process. The fist part of the livestream will be getting setup on the moon and observing the Harvest Moon. I may have some obstructions early but I'll start getting setup anyway. As soon as I have a clear shot, i'll begin doing some imaging. The eclipse is going to be approximately 8% and will begin later, about 9:10 PM CT. At this point I think I'm going to do a series of imaging to get 4-6 different eclipse phases. Since the eclipse is only around 8% I may just do 4, we will see! Wanderer Astro WandererBox Plus V3 Install & Setup | This Controller Is Incredible!! AstroAF 2024-09-04 | Wanderer Astro WandererBox Plus V3 Install & Setup | This Controller Is Incredible!!Wanderer Astro WonderBox Plus V3 Install & Setup on my scope. I go through mounting on my ADM rail with the nice little plates I got off of Amazon (link below). Then, I complete all of my wiring and cable custom runs, using some really handy cable clips (also link below). I had to do a slight modification to the environmental sensor to get it to mount where I wanted on my scope. I got the temperature probe routed into the front of the scope, running around the edge of the Celestron Dew heater, positioning the probe onto the dew heater to monitor temperature of the heater itself. I installed the @wandererastro ASCOM driver and the Wanderer Empire control software, then i was able to connect in NINA and configure my devices in the power and USB sections of the control software. I did some testing and tweaked some of the dew control settings to get things running right. I did find that at 100% power on PWM that I experienced star distortions. Pulling back the power 50% and setting the offset temperature to 10 degrees above the dew point ended up being the perfect settings.So, do I recommend the WandererBox Plus V3? Yes, a resounding Yes! This is a fantastic power and data control that allowed me to consolidate everything into a single switchable device that I can control from my astrophotography software!
