It is just too heavy and fragile, being about 50 years. So that part of my music remained unperformed. With our new module Collide 4 I and everyone else can now take the wonderful textures and sonic possibilities of nuclear research equipment on the road. It is based on a lock-in amplifier, a tool made to sniff out tiny fluctuations of a frequency in vast amount of noise. But Joran took the concept further and added a frequency shifter. What is known is that it was the foray of the English division of Ampex into the territory of the hugely succesful Swiss Nagra recorders. The Nagra 3 had taken the film and TV world by storm and had very little competition in the market of professional location sound. Ampex set out to create a machine of similar quality, and produced a bunch protopypes But development costs were too high in the end, and the remaining examples were handed on to staff members. When I found one on eBay, I knew who would be the perfect person to explore it with: @LOOKMUMNOCOMPUTER
HAINBACH: "For me this is our most „English“ record, in contrast to the „Berlin Sound“ of Pipe Dreams. The lyrics and vibe were influenced by the random encounters in the small pubs near This Museum Is Not Obsolete. From overheard bits to direct exchanges, a lot of the little seaside town of Ramsgate went into this. The opening track „Hey Johnny“ came from a pub owner complaining that all the drilling happening during the museum’s renovations almost knocked down her wall. „Little Ships“ references stories a former RAF member told us about her favorite warplanes, and seagulls from the beach are heard in „Gully Boys“.
Musically, we started as before with two guys and a drum machine in a room setup, jamming out tracks like band. But then time we added more layers, fleshing out the bare instrumentals with call and response synth parts and harmonies."
SAM BATTLE: "We recorded all of the base tracks down live onto the TEAC reel to reel which is in the cover picture and then built on top of them. A couple of the tracks also came from when we went to Blean Wood when testing Hainbach's new portable tape recorder to record the basis of Deadwood and Gully Boys (youtu.be/tB4ejTGMI9w). I thought it would be a good idea to take us to the middle of the woods to make some songs and the floor was literally alive with moving insects, it was the height of ant season! We got the tracks, but didn't leave unbit, ha!Hainbach - Breve (Seil Records 061, 2024)HAINBACH2024-09-27 | Breve is Hainbach’s eighth release on Seil Records. It is an album that manifests the Berlin based artist’s love for vintage electronic gear like few others - and creates a world of dense soundscapes like only Hainbach can built them. At the core of Breve lies the Ondioline, a tube based key instrument from the 1930s that is considered to be the ancestor of todays synthesizers. Paired with a handful of other analog synths and recorded in single takes straight to tape, Breve is raw and beautiful; intense, yet calming. You can feel the heat generated by the equipment, the hands-on approach and the pure enjoyment of living in each sonic moment throughout the album. The 10 tracks that make up Hainbach’s new album range from intimate to vast, from fragile to walls of sound. Often rhythmic, always free. For decades this important way to make an instrument sing has seemingly been relegated to modulation and pitch wheels, with few exceptions in the recent years. This makes for a rather indirect play style, lacking the natural expression of bending a string. It is little known that already in the year 1939 in a sanatorium in France, the inventor Georges Jenny created an instrument that would allow vibrato on a keyboard directly. This is the story and sound of the Ondioline, an instrument I love so much I recorded an entire album with it. Thanks to Forgotten Futures and Daniel Kitzig for the loan of the instrument, which the 1956 model.

Released first in 1978 (keyboard in 1980) it quickly made its way into the electronic music studios of the experimental avantgarde, such as INA GRM and SWR Experimentalstudio. For the time it offered incredible fidelity of pitch-shifting and sampling, surpassing the more famous Fairlight with ease. Pop stars like Prince used it extensively, and it became the go to vocal doubler / harmonizer for many years. This particular unit belonged to Manuel Göttsching (E2-E4) and resides now at the Akademie der Künste Berlin. Robert Henke (Monolake) and Dave Hilowitz joined me there to explore it.

An instrument that creates unreal sounds was not endorsed by the SED leadership. Only in the waning years of the GDR (or DDR as it is called in German) that changed, with the Vermona Synthesizer coming out in 1982. The first officially sanctioned modular synthesizer, the Audiotronic AMS3 featured in this video was built between 1986 and 1988 for the Electro-Acoustic Studio of the Akademie der Künste.

When I sat down at the organ at Paulus church in Magdeburg, I listened to the resonance of the high and low notes. Then I taped down a few keys I wanted to drone on endlessly, creating a bed for Markus on the Euphone to respond and play in. The resonance of glass, steel and pipes on the cold stone walls of the old church created an intense atmosphere. What we played felt like it mattered, even if its just two guys in an empty church.
The sound of the Euphone is both alien yet curiously human. Ice cold yet expressive, it combines with the organ, the old Ibach grand piano and tape loops with a strange fluidity.
While I only approached this record when making it from an exploratory standpoint, with no set idea in mind, in listening back to the tapes I discovered a strange urgency. The setting and the sounds made me think about the things that matter, from the beautiful to the ugly. There is hope here, but it is a struggle.

Euphones are self-sounding instruments, which use friction to produce sound. I only ever experienced their sound as samples, which are useful for scoring otherworldly scenes in media. But they are a far cry from the dynamics of the original, as I discovered when we set up in a church in Magdeburg.

Like a doctor with a stethoscope you are hunting for the ten oscillators on the board. You can even mix in an external signal and play it with the pickup. In this example an arpeggio from the OP-1 is added in to the electric sounds of the instrument. No external effects used, just the filter and the delay on it.
When I first played this in 2022 I loved it and promised I would support its release. Happy to say it is out on Kickstarter now, at a very fair price. Her experiences with "Echoes from the moon" sounded fascinating. Like with all experimental music techniques of old I wanted to try the process for myself. This started a two year long journey.
With the support of Martine-Nicole Rojina (who also helped out on camera on location) I got in contact with the radio telescope in Dwingeloo, a huge dish designed for space exploration. They helped me send signals to the moon: a sopranist (Johanna Vargas), a double bassist (Paul Cannon) as well as sounds from my patrons Sventothem, Michael Féaux, Andrew Stone, harper2k, Filip Ferngren, Dave Seidel, Gary Walker, Michael Peters, the void inclusive, Brendan Ford, David Williams, Joey Pop, Jeremiah Turner, Richy486, Joshua Philgarlic, Tim Moore, Grant Basma Horsnell, Arson Bright, Dan Kibke, Antonio T, Chris Sherman, Sergey, Charlie, Bartek Trame and Dixit.

This allowed for touch control of voltage, which he used to create instruments. It found first commercial musical use in the Mattel Musical Thing, a cheap toy synth. Frustrated with the experience, Eventoff went on to create the much more refined Sonica. The Sonica is a lovingly crafted boutique instrument with an oscillator by famed Serge Tcherepnin, the creator of the Serge synthesizer. Only about 650 where made, and they are collector's items. The technology of the force sensing resistor proved hugely successful and lives on in cars, robotics and instruments like the AKAI MPC and the Otamatone.

Looking to expand its sonic range, Maurice Martenot developed a series of amps around the instrument, from a normal speaker, to tuned strings, a resonating gong to this strange box here. Manufactured by Rehdéko, a long defunct French high-end company, it uses seven brass strings attached to the speaker cone. This creates a rather lush and surprisingly dense reverb, with no feel of the "boingyness" of usual spring reverbs. As I am a fan of unusual speakers, see "Gong Amp" I made with AudioThing (audiothing.net/effects/gong-amp), I could not resist its allure.

The devices were not a commercial success and quickly disappeared. But one enterprising band from Germany took their lofi sound to heart. Kraftwerk employed the Orchestron in many songs, from Das Model to Uranium. Even today its finds fans - such as Kyle Dixon of Survive, who used the iconic "choir" in their Stranger Things soundtrack. He employed the modern adaption of this arcane technology, the Quilter Labs Panoptigon. I talk with Kyle in the video, show a bit what you can do with the Panoptigon, demo classic Kraftwerk patches and introduce my own disc for this fantastic instrument.

I took my trusty vintage MD421-2 and combined it with a period-correct Uher Report Monitor 4000. I have seen reporters on TV, children’s books (Ali Mitgutsch Wimmelbücher for my German audience) and IRL rocking this combination, down to the leather bag.
Recording outside I was surprised how sensitive the combination was - I had used the 421 in the studio, on drums especially for my „Nuclear Drum Loops“ sound pack. Outside it picked up tiny details from the environment -.especially birdsong sounded beautiful. As someone obsessed with field recording on tape, that was a wonderful surprise. I can replace my heavy Nagra setup with the Uher/MD421 in many cases.
The MD421 is a truly classic mic, here is to many more 421 days! Now @sennheiser, how about a MD21 day? But over time it became a cult-classic, thanks to its excellent filter that fits perfectly into underground dance music. After decades of it being a collector's item, we are now spoiled for choice as two companies offer clones and the original creator is re-releasing the Enigiser again. I am working with the Analog Sweden Swenigiser (available via unzunz.com) in this video, a much enhanced version of this rave classic.
