(First one and second leading by a long shot, but each subsequent album getting weaker) Something really bad happened between 1982 'love over gold', the peak of MK's guitar playing, and 'Brothers in arms'. It was an obsession with digital over production and Mark Knopfler’s even more pronounced penchant for slowed down hay rotters that dribbled along like blood exiting the nose of an OD’ing downer freak. There is virtually no ‘rock’, no decent soloing, and no excitement to be found on ‘brothers in arms’. It’s like it was recorded during a serious depression. Its popularity is absolutely baffling. Sultans of swing deserved all the airplay it got. But walk of life? I never liked ‘brothers in arms'. I can’t even listen to it. Too much gloss, overly produced, too mellow, not enough guitar, with two of the worst songs in their entire catalog getting massive airplay. (money for nothing, walk of life) What I most remember about it is that stereo shops always used the opening of 'money for nothing' to demo speakers. That's all it was good for. Not to mention the 'faggot' lyrics in money for nothing have not aged well. That song was actually banned in Canada for about ten years because of that. Walk of life gets my nod as the worst song from dire straits. (even worse than 'les boys') Gives me bad memories of 1985 as it played on the radio 24/7. It's basically muzak, with a wrist slitting organ line that repeats far too often. It’s another cheesy corporate baseball song anthem that we didn’t need as we already had to listen to John Fogerty’s terrible ‘Centerfield’ the year before. Add some of the worst vocals imaginable. (let's face it. MK can't sing) and those cringeworthy 'Whoo hoos!" Even MK doesn't like it and refuses to play it for years already. I played this on the street a few times to see the reaction. I wanted to see if it could be improved. I always tried to redeem it by soloing throughout. What it needed was less 'Whoo hoo's', no vocals, a decent guitar solo and viola! (40 year anniversary!) shatnershairpiece 2023-02-18 | 2/13/23 I wanted to do a tribute jam to THE THING last summer when it was the 40th anniversary of the movie release, but I was too busy with busking. Finally got around to it! I saw the movie on day of release back in summer 1982. Morricone and Carpenter have been influences on me musically, and The Thing is my favorite horror film, one of the very few I have seen almost 50 times. (Exorcist is number 2) I have always been heavily into soundtrack music and this score was one of my favorites for the minimalism and suspense. I wrote a track loosely based on the heartbeat bass line of the main theme, added drums, synths, and jammed for 100 minutes. How is it possible to improvise this long and keep it interesting? (IN THE ZONE guitar playing!) shatnershairpiece 2023-02-03 | This is my tribute to Tom Verlaine, who died in January 2023. Verlaine led the very influential group Television that came out in the punk era in 1977. Television was part of the CBGB scene that included Ramones, Blondie, Talking heads. The second guitarist was Richard Lloyd. Their first album 'Marquee moon' is still highly regarded. This jam was inspired by the chorus (2 minor chords) of a track called 'Call Mr.Lee' off Television's 1992 album, which I actually like more than the 1977 debut. I really went all out on this jam. Throwing in out of the box solos and progressions and getting very angular in the spirit of Verlaine. Verlaine/Television was never an influence on my own playing, (could not get into the vocals) but I did like some of his songs and his individual lead style which was not typical rock phrasing. I wasn't even aware of him until 1985. My absolute favorite song of his is off his 1985 solo album 'Flashlight' and is called 'Cry mercy judge'. Thankfully, it has been torn down. We are playing 'what is and what should never be' and the answer to that was 'This band should never have been.'I met this singer when I saw her doing a duo in a bar. Later, she got a gig at The Eldorado hotel' and needed a band. I had a trio so I offered my band to do the gig. We had one very short rehearsal in her living room without amplification or even drums. The bassist didn't even show up and came to the gig unprepared. This gig was one of the worst I ever had. I remember wanting to go home by set 2. The drummer also wanted to quit and we mulled it over during the break after set 1, if it was worth the $100 pay. The singer was not pleasant to be around. Making demands in the middle of the gig, chastising the band for making minor mistakes in a song we had not even rehearsed. She acted like we were at Carnegie hall while we were surrounded by drunk rednecks. The drummer was great and I had worked with him in many of my own bands. The only credit I can give here is that the singer actually got this gig, which happened maybe once in ten years of my bands. Normally, I got all the gigs and no one else ever lifted a finger. I just remembered that she told a story about her ex husband and what a bastard he was and how she dragged him through the courts. I think later on I suggested she get actual therapy instead of doing it on stage. I like to put up these videos as a flash back to band days and it makes me so thankful I don't have to deal with these flakes and shit gigs anymore. People think being in a band is the ultimate? It's not. I much prefer being on the street. Band work to me was bad pay, crap hours, drama, compromise, drunks, not being able to jam, and 100 diva singers forcing me to play their Adele covers. I should have gone solo way before 2015. That was my one big life mistake.
