We bought a Haas UMC-500SS 5-axis CNC mill with the 10 pallet pool. Having a pallet pool on our MB-4000 Horizontal, we "saw the light" about automation! It does NOT just mean high volume or lights out! Having the pallet pool lets us leave various setups and fixtures in-place and ready to run!

We were more than happy to help by making 6 of these camera mounts. Only one of the mounts will be installed in the rover (set to launch on May 4, 2023!) but they needed additional versions for testing!
5-axis works great for a part like this - not only for accessing the complex features at various angles, but also to make it more efficient to product 6 of these parts. We used the 'window machining' technique with hot-glue to hold the part in place to completely machine the part in a single setup!

CNC Resources: nyccnc.comStop Your Haas from Crashing with Zero Gage Length Tools!NYC CNC2023-02-01 | It seems crazy that a brand-new CNC machine can crash if an operator forgets to set a tool length! It's far too easy of a mistake to make with catastrophic - and expensive - consequences!
This simple line of G-Code will stop any HAAS CNC machine from running if a tool has a 0.0" gage length (0.0" is the default value from the factory)! Even better than stopping the machine, we also create a custom alarm telling the operator that they need to set the tool length.
Note: 1) This method still doesn't stop the machine from crashing with the WRONG tool length 2) There are many other ways to tackle this problem; one other suggestion is setting all tools to a long length.

One of the first steps has been making Process Bins. These bins are visually unique (with green tape) and contain information about a part, process, machine, etc.
SMW parts have process bins with laminated setup sheets, QR codes to informational videos, and QC gages. Our air compressor has a process bin with the manual, extra fuses, and a copy of the last filter/service order! They are a great way to document 'tribal' knowledge and make it easy to make good decisions about running a shop!

Our Fusion 360 Okuma Post Processor worked great for Probing an Angle along X (or Y) using the G11 (aka G68) style coordinate shift rotation! BUT - it would NOT work when posting to multiple WCS offsets! We got the error "WCS offset cannot change while using angle rotation compensation". This error seemed bogus, but I wasn't comfortable fixing it, so we reached out to Dr. Phil from DSI to help get it working!

Fusion 360 lacks a true "master" tool library that tracks what tools are used across different parts! Let's say you want to update speeds & feeds for a tool across many parts - but which parts use that tool? Or, let's say you switch a thru-spindle-coolant tool to a non-TSC tool - but you NEED to update the CAM!
We "fixed" this with a Python script that parses through HTML setup sheets. While it's only a band-aid until Autodesk offers true 'linked libraries', it actually works well! Using the setup sheet data means running the script is fast - and doesn't require access to Fusion or the file.

In today's video, we'll walk through installing a simple Python script that was written by a Tormach community member.
