He gathered them into an album, and I decided to play the entire collection from beginning to end.I had already recorded two of the pieces earlier, so for the others you’ll hear my sight-reading performances. So I wanted to try to play it on this beautiful warm sounding organ (1804 Van Peteghem organ in Ulvenhout, the Netherlands). Max Oesten was born in Berlin, the son of the German composer Theodore Oesten. He spent most of his professional life as a church organist in Königsburg (not Köningsberg). This late romantic / 20th century piece feels a bit American to me. I like it a lot. I played it on the Marcussen organ (Laurenskerk, Rotterdam) using Hauptwerk, with a warm 8’ soundscape that perfectly supports the gentle character of this piece.I have a special love for miniatures: they may be short in length, but they often capture a whole world of emotion and color in just a few measures. (However this piece isn't that short with three pages....) For me, that makes them gems of the organ repertoire — small, concentrated moments of beauty. *About the Composer*Flor Peeters (1903–1986) was a Belgian organist, pedagogue, and composer, and one of the most influential figures in 20th-century organ music. He studied at the Lemmens Institute in Mechelen, where he later became director. Peeters was internationally active as a recitalist and teacher, blending traditional Flemish polyphony with modern harmonic language in his works. Dolcetta (For Rien) | Graham Twist | By Rien Rien Schalkwijk 2025-09-26 | Today would have been a joyous occasion, marked by the celebration of her 80th birthday with wine and cake. However, life had other plans. In 2023, she passed away at the age of 77. Despite the sorrow, she found solace and perhaps even happiness in the end of her five-year struggle against an unfair adversary. While the remaining ones had to deal with their feelings of loss. These feelings may not diminish, but they only grow stronger with each passing day, week, month, and year. The only antidote to these feelings of loss is love—an abundance of it. This is the reason why I have created a new performance, a slow reflective one, of Graham’s Dolcetta and release it today. Not at my usual time at 07.00 European Standard Time (CET) but right after midnight. Crafted with love by Graham and performed with love by me, this piece is a testament to the power of love. In just a single page of notes — often less than two minutes — a whole world unfolds. These compressed pieces carry an intimacy and beauty that lingers long after the last chord fades. They are like whispered stories: brief, delicate, and full of meaning. Sometimes they feel like a sigh, sometimes like a smile — but always like a gift from composer to listener. I considered to publish them as a collection, but like almost always, at the end I chose to publish them separately. Because they all are gems on their own that deserve the main stage. Dom Andrew Moore – Modal Interludes (Nos. 11–16) | Powerful ánd Peaceful Organ Music Rien Schalkwijk 2025-09-21 | Experience the bold ánd serene beauty of Dom Andrew Moore’s Modal Interludes for Organ — a collection of twenty-eight short pieces for manuals. In this video, I play Interludes 11–16 but the first one is Interlude 12 (and after that, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16). The first piece and last piece are really powerful. In the first one you can hear the 8’ Chamades. The last one finishes with a rumbling 32’ reed in the pedals. One of the pieces has an interesting 5/4 rhythm. The pieces are all written for manuals, but I couldn’t behave and improvised pedaling with the first and last piece from the performance. Fun fact is that the composer only gives a tempo, but no registration or loudness for the pieces. So, you can use your own creativity and model the pieces in the way you desire. Each time if I play the ritornello with both hands and feet it touches deeper. The typical "Lehenbauer harmonies" lift this Psalm Melody up to a Celestial, almost Transcendental level. Georges Jacob – Prise de voile 🌿 | Cavaillé-Coll organ Caen (HW)| Scrolling Score Rien Schalkwijk 2025-09-17 | I recorded this beautiful piece by Georges Jacob (1877–1950) during a mighty thunder storm. It was a nice contrast with the music! The French phrase “prise de voile” literally means “taking the veil.” It refers to the religious ceremony in which a woman becomes a nun, symbolically receiving the veil as part of her new life in a convent. It marks the transition from novitiate (training period) to fully professed nun. In a broader or metaphorical sense, it can also mean entering a cloistered or religious life.Born in Paris, Jacob studied at the École Niedermeyer and later at the Conservatoire de Paris, where he won First Prize in organ in 1900 in Alexandre Guilmant’s class. A renowned performer and teacher, Jacob dedicated much of his life to both preserving the great organ works of J.S. This prelude was published in The Village Organist. While the score includes registration suggestions, I chose a different approach: playing it with a forceful, full-bodied registration from the very first note to the last. My interpretation imagines this prelude shaking the very walls of a cathedral.Born in Kentish Town, London, Reynolds studied at Compton Place Road New College in Eastbourne, Sussex, graduating as Mus Bac (1886) and later as Mus Doc (1889). Autumn brings rain, wind, and chilly weather, but also the warmth of togetherness — enjoying the company of family and friends indoors, sharing heart-warming dinners, making music, or simply listening to it. The symbolism behind this piece:It begins gently, like a peaceful walk in the woods. Soon, however, the wind rises and the leaves begin to fall from the trees — captured in the quick, descending ritornellos. Night falls cold and dark, set in the minor key, with a 16’ pedal reed adding extra chill to the atmosphere. Then morning breaks: the friendly sun returns, inviting us to another walk in the park. Yet the wind still blows, and the leaves keep tumbling down — even more than the day before — echoed once again in the repeating ritornellos.Written in C major, with a beautiful modulation to C minor in the middle section, this piece is suitable for any occasion. Garçon, Remettez-Nous Ça 🇫🇷 | Bold Improvised Pipe Organ March 🎹🎺 Rien Schalkwijk 2025-09-09 | Today, September 8, after a long day on the road, I sat down at the organ console in my home studio after a healthy diner. To finish the day with something fun and lighthearted, I chose this cheerful 1960s piece by Aimable & Jacky Noguez.The title “Garçon, Remettez-Nous Ça” literally means “Waiter, bring us the same thing again” — something you’d say when ordering another round of drinks. In modern French, though, calling a waiter “garçon” is considered a bit outdated (and sometimes even impolite).Originally written for accordion, orchestra, and singer, I transformed it into a bold, spontaneous organ march! Using only a lead sheet with single notes, I improvised with full organ registration — yes, even a Tuba on the pedals! 🎺I’m releasing this video on September 9 — my birthday 🥳 — as a little celebration of life and a reminder to not take ourselves too seriously as organists. Sometimes, music is simply about joy.Sit back, turn up the volume, and enjoy this spontaneous performance!
