The Yarra River floodplain, nestled deep in Victoria's Yarra Ranges, is a landscape shaped by millions of years of natural processes. This ancient system supported a web of life, from the platypus in the water to wombats in the scrub, to kangaroos grazing the plains. Indigenous communities have long known the importance of these floodplains — not only as hunting grounds but also as places of spiritual significance and ecological wealth.
The Purpose of This Exploration:
With growing concern about the health of the river and the noticeable decline in native species, I decided to launch a small-scale project. Armed with two high-resolution thermal cameras, I aimed to survey the nocturnal activity along the riverbanks and adjacent woodlands. Would the natives still be hanging on? Would invasive species dominate? And most importantly — could we still turn things around?
Thermal Survey Methodology:
Over two consecutive nights, I set up thermal cameras at strategic points along the floodplain, focusing on the river and Billabongs— the places where native animals would most likely appear if they were still present. This passive surveillance allowed for minimal human disturbance and maximum authenticity in the results.
Wildlife Observed:
Platypus: One of Australia’s most iconic (and increasingly rare) river mammals, a platypus was seen foraging in a slow-moving section of the Yarra River.
Wombat: Wombats made a few appearances, seemingly in good health and numbers.
Rakali (Native Water Rat): Captured briefly moving along the water's edge and swimming?— these often-overlooked animals are vital indicators of waterway health.
Possums: Both common brushtail and ringtail possums were seen navigating trees and lower vegetation.
Bats: Microbats, also known as insect-eating bats, are common in the Yarra Valley and play a vital role in the ecosystem. They are small, fast, and mostly nocturnal, and they use echolocation to navigate and hunt insects, including agricultural pests, making them important for controlling insect populations.
Birds: Ducks and maybe a Owl (?) which landed / took off from the camera.
Non-Native Species Observed:
Cows: Feral cattle were caught on camera standing directly in the river, contributing to bank erosion and water contamination.
Foxes: At least three individual foxes were recorded hunting, posing a serious threat to ground-dwelling native animals.
Black Rats: These invaders were frequently seen near human-altered sections of the floodplain.
Disturbingly Missing:
No kangaroos. No wallabies.
The total absence of these key grazers signals a major ecological imbalance and possibly local collapse.
Environmental Threats Identified:
Severe riverbank erosion
Sediment-heavy, nutrient-polluted water
Weed invasion: Blackberry, thistle, and other aggressive species
Feral animal impacts
Dead or decaying livestock near water sources
Why It Matters:
The Yarra River isn’t just an isolated system — it feeds into larger networks that support agriculture, urban water supplies, and recreational areas. Damage upstream eventually affects millions of people downstream. Plus, if these floodplains collapse entirely, we risk losing unique species that have evolved over millions of years.
The Path to Recovery:
It’s not too late. Simple but powerful actions could make a huge difference:
Fencing off waterways from cattle
Active fox and pest control programs
Weed removal and native plant restoration
Community-led monitoring projects
Stronger legislative protection for critical habitat areas

Features such as tail morphology, rear leg proportions, head shape, and lack of mange suggest that it does not belong to any currently known native or introduced species in the region.
When all anatomical, thermal, and behavioural evidence is considered collectively, the likelihood that the animal is a Thylacine is estimated at 89%.
