Union Pacific’s Triple Track Main: North Platte to Gibbon - November 18, 2022 Southern Illinois Railfan 2022-11-23 | Fellow railfan & close friend, Steven Hamilton (@signalupproductions) & myself travel to Central Nebraska to do some railfanning on the Union Pacific Overland Route, the original Transcontinental Railroad, often referred as the Kearney Subdivision or Triple Track Main. The Union Pacific Railroad completed a third main track in the 1990s to ease congestion of rail traffic between Gibbon & North Platte. Today, up to 70 trains can be seen on the Kearney Subdivision in a 24 hour period.Steven & I started the morning of Friday, November 18, 2022 just east of North Platte to begin a six hour adventure of finding trains between North Platte & Gibbon. Chasing the CSX ‘OLS’ Locomotive on CSX’s CE&D Subdivision - March 21, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-03-24 | The spring season of 2023 has begun! On a rather damp March afternoon, we are on location of CSX’s former Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad CE&D Subdivision. For roughly 146 miles, the CE&D extends from Danville, Illinois to the north side of Evansville, Indiana. In today’s video, we give chase to CSX train M647-21 led by CSXT 4568, painted in their Operation Lifesaver (OLS) paint scheme. Norfolk Southern Heritage Units Galore in Chattanooga, TN - January 28, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-02-12 | I finished off the month of January by making a quick weekend visit to Chattanooga after visiting Georgia for a couple weeks. I didn't really have a set in stone agenda during my time trackside until early Saturday morning. My radio led me to Norfolk Southern's Central of Georgia heritage locomotive on the point of an intermodal train to Virginia. Little did I know that one heritage unit catch would lead into three more heritage unit catches throughout the rest of the day. Birthday Railfanning at the Folkston Funnel in Folkston, GA - January 22, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-02-04 | Folkston, Georgia is known as one of the best railfanning hotspots of the south. This is where two major CSX lines come together to handle traffic to & from the state of Florida. In August of 2001, the city constructed a viewing platform for railfans across the country to visit and watch trains. Since then, Folkston has greatly expanded into a major railroad city. With trackside lodging available, nearby attractions, and much more, this is one place everyone needs to visit.My 22nd birthday happened to fall on a Sunday, during the last weekend I was visiting Georgia. I arrived Saturday afternoon and stayed in Mr. Peake’s Cabin, provided by Railside Lodging, watched a good majority of the traffic pass through town. On Sunday morning, I woke up early and captured a handful of trains that passed through Folkston before returning north. NS 366 and the Damaged Railroad Crossing in Locust Grove, GA - January 20, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-02-01 | Recent storm damage near Locust Grove caused a pole from a fiberoptic line to shift over and foul the main track. Earlier in the day, a train struck the downed fiberoptic line which then wrapped around the crossing and took the crossing down altogether. In this video, I am on location at the damaged railroad crossing on Davis Road, just south of Locust Grove. Northbound NS train 366 was ordered by their dispatcher to stop & protect the crossing for any traffic that could be approaching. Intermodal North, Coal Loads South in McDonough, GA - January 19, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-30 | As the sun begins to set in McDonough, I took a brief visit to the south side of town to get in position for a meet between NS trains 24A & 732. With 11,000 feet of train, 24A can be seen first entering the siding. 24A is a priority intermodal train from Jacksonville, Florida to Norfolk Southern's massive Inman Yard in Atlanta. Visiting the CSX W&A Subdivision in Tunnel Hill, Georgia - January 15, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-28 | Welcome to the CSX W&A Subdivision in North Georgia! The W&A Subdivision stretches from Chattanooga, Tennessee to Atlanta, Georgia passing through some scenic, yet historic areas on its route. We find ourselves in the small village of Tunnel Hill, located about 25 miles south of Chattanooga and about 95 miles north of Atlanta. The town was incorporated in 1848 as Tunnelsville before changing its name to Tunnel Hill in 1856.Both town names got their name from the nearby railroad tunnel that cut through the Chetoogeta Mountain on behalf of the Western & Atlantic Railroad. Three Train Thursday on the NS Southern West District - January 12, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-25 | Despite my busy schedule, I still had time to capture three movements around Fairfield on a rather gloomy Thursday. We started off the day capturing a pair of RJ Corman SW1500 locomotives seen in the consist of westbound NS 168. Later in the day, NS trains 218 & 219 were set up to meet at Moon, just west of Fairfield. UP ‘MoPac’ Heritage on CSX St. Louis Line & CN Train Action - January 11, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-22 | On a Wednesday morning, I received a heads up that the CSX St. Louis Line from Indianapolis to St. Louis would be hosting Union Pacific's heritage unit honoring the Missouri Pacific Railroad on the point of train M373-11. I made a spur of the moment trip up to Teutopolis to get in position for this train. In less than 10 minutes, M373-11 rounded the curve and made its way into Teutopolis. Awesome!To add to the excitement, before leaving Effingham, I found a pair of Canadian National trains operating over their Champaign Subdivision in the late afternoon. Drone Video: Norfolk Southern Train Meet near Fairfield, IL - January 10, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-20 | Today, we're uploading something a little different than usual. On a mild January afternoon, a meet was set up at Moon, just west of Fairfield between westbound NS 168 and eastbound NS 219. With the decent weather that afternoon, I took my DJI Mini 2 up in the air for a brief flight to watch the meet take place at the west end of the siding. The Evansville Western Railway in Mt. Vernon & Woodlawn, IL - January 9, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-17 | On a Monday evening, we find the nightly Evansville Western Railway 'MCL' job charging through Mt. Vernon, Illinois after making a pickup from the Union Pacific on the east side of town. Additionally, we leapfrog ahead of the 'MCL' to get one more shot in the small town of Woodlawn. HO Scale: Norfolk Southern Coal Loads on the UPSF Joint Line - January 4, 2022 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-14 | We returned to the HO Scale UPSF Joint Line for the first Wednesday gathering of the 2023 year. For Christmas this past year, I got an Athearn Genesis SD70M-2 in Norfolk Southern's 'Horsehead' livery. On this Wednesday evening, NS 2666 was ordered to take UPSF train C-LMIM from Logan Mine down to Argentine Yard to eventually be handed off to the Cook Coal Terminal in Metropolis, Illinois. Indiana Rail Road ‘PAUT’ in Palestine, IL - January 4, 2023 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-11 | Welcome back to the Indiana Rail Road! In early January, we started out the year by capturing two Indiana Rail Road operations on their Indianapolis Subdivision in Palestine, Illinois. The operations we captured on this video are known as the Palestine Utility jobs (PAUT). These trains mainly work around the Palestine area. First is PAUT1, returning from the Marathon refinery in Robinson with tanks of molten sulfur and loaded hoppers of petcoke. Cab Ride aboard the Missionary Ridge Local in Chattanooga, TN - Oct. 28, 2022 Southern Illinois Railfan 2023-01-01 | Happy New Year! While I was in Chattanooga prior to my NS conductor training in Georgia, I stopped at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum to see one of their most popular operations: The Missionary Ridge Local.The Missionary Ridge Local is a short 65-minute train ride from the depot at Grand Junction, located at the museum grounds to the end of the line at East Chattanooga. The Spring Switch at Neilson Junction in Marion, IL - December 9, 2022 Southern Illinois Railfan 2022-12-19 | Eight miles south of Marion sits the infamous junction of the Union Pacific Marion Subdivision & the BNSF Beardstown Subdivision called Neilson Junction. Here is where both lines from the north join together and share trackage rights for the remaining 45 miles to Metropolis, home to much of the coal-fired power plants in Southern Illinois. On a pleasant December afternoon, BNSF brings in their local train from Paducah, returning to Centralia. Today’s practice at Neilson Junction requires use of a spring switch in order for BNSF to continue on their rails. Train Operations of the Crab Orchard & Egyptian Railroad - December 9, 2022 Southern Illinois Railfan 2022-12-14 | If you love switching operations and railroad's with rich history, then this video is for you! Welcome to the Crab Orchard & Egyptian Railroad based in the heart of Southern Illinois. Founded in 1971, the CO&E began operations as a tourist railroad for the greater Marion area. This railroad was the home to two steam locomotives, 2-4-2T #5 and 2-8-0 #17. Tourist operations ended in 1978 after a fire broke out inside the old Illinois Central depot in downtown Marion on June 13, 1977. From there, the railroad began its freight operations in 1978 using a newly acquired 35-ton switcher. The 2-8-0 #17 began its first revenue run on May 10, 1979 and was used as the primary locomotive for the CO&E. Moving into the new decade, #17 was continuing to pull freight on the still expanding railroad in and around Marion before the steam pipe from the throttle valve to the cylinders collapsed in 1986, abruptly ending the steam era for the CO&E. Only two days before, the railroad had acquired two former Missouri Pacific Railroad SW1200 diesel locomotives, which became the railroad's primary motive power after the decision was made not to overhaul 2-8-0 #17. The historic steam locomotive now rests at the Boone and Scenic Valley Railroad in Boone, Iowa for historical purposes. Union Pacific Marion Subdivision Trains & Track Warrants - December 6, 2022 Southern Illinois Railfan 2022-12-11 | The Union Pacific plays a vital role in some of the rail operations in Southern Illinois. For 45 miles, the Union Pacific traverses over the former Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad mainline into the coal fields of Southern Illinois. This is known as the Marion Subdivision. On a cool & gloomy Tuesday, we find ourselves in the Marion area to see what we can find. A northbound coal train from the Cook Coal Terminal in Metropolis can be seen crossing the former Illinois Central (now Crab Orchard & Egyptian Railroad) diamond in downtown Marion on its trek back to Wyoming for another load of coal. Shortly after, we travel eight miles to the south of Marion to a point on the railroad called Neilson Junction. Here, is where BNSF's Beardstown Subdivision joins Union Pacific trackage for the remaining 15 miles to West Vienna. We find BNSF's local train from Centralia to Paducah, Kentucky making its way onto the Union Pacific.Track warrants is the way all trains operate over the Marion Subdivision. Chasing the Conrail Heritage on NS 177 in Chattanooga, TN - Nov. 14, 2022 Southern Illinois Railfan 2022-11-16 | Chattanooga, a major railroading hub for Norfolk Southern, is home to their large DeButts Yard. With the multiple NS mainlines that branch out of Chattanooga in each direction, there is no shortage of action. On a cool November day, southbound Norfolk Southern train 177 can be seen coming into town from the north with Norfolk Southern’s Conrail heritage unit on point. We get some footage at Tenbridge, the point where the NS Cincinnati-Chattanooga mainline (CNO&TP) crosses the Tennessee River.
