Robert Schumann is perhaps best loved for his songs and piano music, but his four symphonies reveal another side of him entirely: a composer who could fill an orchestra with the same lyrical intimacy he poured into a single melody.
Symphony No. 1 in B-flat major, "Spring"
Written in a burst of creative energy in 1841, the Spring Symphony is exactly what its name promises: warm, song-like melodies, rhythms that push eagerly forward, and a finale that arrives with unguarded joy. If you are new to Schumann's orchestral music, this is where to begin.
Symphony No. 2 in C major
Written during a period of illness and depression, the Second carries real emotional weight. It opens in shadow and works its way, over four movements, toward something more settled and even heroic. The finale feels hard-won, and all the more powerful for it.
Symphony No. 3 in E-flat major, "Rhenish"
Inspired by Schumann's move to Düsseldorf in 1850, the Rhenish is open-aired and confident, drawing on the landscapes of the Rhine region. Its most striking moment is the solemn fifth movement, evoking the grandeur of Cologne Cathedral. Colorful and immediately appealing, it remains one of his most beloved works.
Symphony No. 4 in D minor
The most ambitious of the four, the Fourth connects all its movements through shared themes and a single key, giving it an almost novelistic unity. It moves from darkness and unease to a finale that feels genuinely triumphant, a drama of struggle and redemption that anticipates the late Romantic composers who would follow.
Heard in sequence, the four symphonies trace a remarkable arc: from the optimism of Spring, through the hard-fought consolation of the Second, the warmth of the Rhenish, and the psychological depth of the Fourth. Four very different works, one unmistakable voice.
