We took our RV deep into the California desert to explore Bombay Beach CA and Slab City CA while completely boondocking off grid.
From the abandoned shoreline of the Salton Sea to the wild, lawless community known as “The Last Free Place in America,” this was one of the most unique RV adventures we’ve ever had.

Bombay Beach was once a booming resort town. Today it’s a surreal mix of abandoned buildings, art installations, and desert solitude. Just down the road sits Slab City — an off-grid, alternative community built on an old military base with no utilities, no rules, and total freedom.
We’re traveling full-time in our RV and rely on our solar setup to boondock in places like this. No hookups. No reservations. Just freedom.
