Combining literary, socially engaged texts with innovative and genre-breaking music, Anne Clark (born 1960 in Croyden/London) has covered every kind of style, while at the same time maintaining her own identity on each and every recording, whether it be the samples (before sampling became a concept) and electronically treated acoustics of "The Sitting Room" (1982), to the ground-breaking analogue synth classics of "Sleeper In Metropolis" (1983) and "Our Darkness" (1984).
Clark is mainly a spoken word artist. Many of her lyrics deal critically with the imperfections of humanity, everyday life, and politics. Musically, almost all of Anne Clarke's works can be classified as electronic music with partly avant-garde classical, folk, rock and dance elements.
Consistently looking for new ways of expression and communication through the emotion of music and language, Anne seeks to not only challenge herself but her audience as well.
Going between extremes of the minimal Scandinavian jazz influences of "Unstill Life" (1991) to the pastoral and poetic interpretations and translations of Rainer Maria Rilke’s poetry on "Just After Sunset" (1997), to the full-on electronics and sparse acoustics of "The Smallest Acts Of Kindness" (2008), only very few artists have covered such a wide spectrum over such a long and consistent career.
In 1998 Anne Clark performed with her band - Andy Bell (keys), Gabriela Alqueres (guit.) and Midus Guerreiro (bass) - at the WDR (biggest national German Radio & TV - station) Rockpalast Osterrocknacht in Bonn's Biskuithalle. The impressive concert started with Anne's 1990 single "Abuse". followed by 1991's "Counter Act" from the "Unstill Life" album. Tracks from the albums "The Law Is An Anagram Of Wealth" (1993) and "To Love And Be Loved" (1995) completed the program, including terrific live versions of the Anne Clark hits "Sleeper In Metropolis" and "Our Darkness." Conclusion: A very impressive and evocative performance by Anne and her musicians, now available on CD and DVD.

LIPS TURN BLUE, the acclaimed Upstate NY band whose debut self-titled album
on the MIG MUSIC label has been getting rave reviews since its May 4th release,
has release to a powerful live music video designed to pay tribute to Sir Paul McCartney’s for his 80th birthday.
The band’s compelling cover of “Maybe I’m Amazed,” featuring bassist Mike Mullane on lead vocals, has been a staple of the band’s set list. This is also the first recording the band has released to the public featuring LTB’s new vocalist/ instrumentalist Iggy Marino, who covers harmonies on “Maybe I’m Amazed.” . Also featured is guitarist/ vocalist Don Mancuso; keyboardist Eric Bieber; and drummer Roy Stein, who joined the group during the making of the album. A live video of the Beatles classic, “Hay Bulldog” (which appears on the band’s debut album) is also set for release later in the year.
“We wanted to do something special for Sir Paul’s 80th,” said Eric Bieber.
“The music he made in The Beatles and his extensive solo catalog have inspired millions of musicians, songwriters and performers. This is our way of saying thank you for all the incredible music you have given the world.”

“John is a great force of nature,” enthused Tom Waits after he produced Hammond’s 2001 album Wicked Grin, which almost entirely consisted of interpretations of Waits compositions. “I don’t know anybody that can play guitar like that except guys that are old enough to be his grandfather. And for a writer it’s flattering to have someone like John do your songs. He has invaluable experience and finesse. He makes me sound good.”
On „Wicked Grin“ John Hammond was accompanied by a small group of musicians, all of whom had previously worked with Waits. Most of these musicians subsequently gigged the album with Hammond but by the time of the Bremen gig that comprises „Wicked Grin – Live“ in 2002, the line-up consisted of guitarist Frank Carillo, bassist Marty Ballou and drummer Stephen Hodges.
All the songs are extraordinary. Here are compelling and surreal despatches from America’s demi-monde, with the songs peopled by billiard-playing midgets, blind firemen, drunks, junkies, losers, inadequates, cheating women and hobos with Runyonesque names like Slaughterhouse Joe, Jack The Cutter, Little Joe from Kokomo, Jimmy The Harp and The 44 Kid.
Hammond has always regarded „Wicked Grin“ as a career highlight. But if the album is a landmark in his recording career, it is surely equally true, on the evidence of „Wicked Grin – Live“, that the gigs he played in support of it were amongst the most remarkable of his glorious, ongoing, six decade career as a travelling bluesman.

The story of Canned Heat is one of imperishable music, of zeitgeist-capturing hit singles and albums and of glorious performances at epochal events like the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival and the 1969 Woodstock Festival and at legendary venues like San Francisco’s Fillmore Auditorium.
And most of all, perhaps, the story of Canned Heat is one of triumphant perseverance for through all their successes and disasters the band have retained their musical integrity and commitment to playing the blues and they remain admired and active to the present day.
By the time of the band’s 1998 Rockpalast gig Fito de la Parra and Larry Taylor, who had formerly played bass but was now on guitar, had been joined by singer-slide guitarist Robert Lucas and bassist Greg Kage.
During their performance the band play many of their most loved songs including „On The Road Again“ on which de la Parra attempts to replicate Wilson“s extraordinary, spooky vocals while the band recreate something of the mesmerizing magic of the hit record.
De la Parra also channels his inner Alan Wilson on “Going Up The Country“. “We’re going to take you to Woodstock,” he announces before the song, an irresistible invitation for those in the audience and indeed for those of us listening now, over twenty years later. New frontman Lucas, a powerful, declamatory vocalist, sings lead on “Let’s Work Together“ and also on songs like William Harris’s ”Bullfrog Blues“, “Amphetamine Annie“, a cautionary tale of excessive drug use originally recorded on 1968“s Boogie With Canned Heat (if only the band had heeded their own warning!) and his own songs „See These Tears“ and „Iron Horse“.
Throughout, Lucas’s slide and Taylor’s lead guitar are subtle and swinging and the whole band play with an utterly convincing blues feel.
Since then the band’s personnel has continued to evolve (Lucas left in 2000, sadly dying from a drug overdose in 2008, aged forty six) and by now over fifty musicians have been Canned Heat members. But in 2019 Larry Taylor became another of the band’s classic lineup to die, passing away, aged seventy-seven, from cancer.
Fito de le Parra is thus Canned Heat’s only survivor from the 60s but although the band have regularly been booked for events like The Flower Power Cruise and Woodstock reunions they transcend the era in which they made their name. As the Rockpalast gig proved in 1998 and every gig since has re-emphasised, Canned Heat have never been a mere nostalgia act. Instead they have always been a blues band of compelling potency whose mastery of the idiom has now been delighting audiences for over fifty eventful years – with no end yet in sight!

LIPS TURN BLUE, formerly known in the Upstate New York region as the popular club act, DDRIVE, has regrouped and returned with a new name, a brilliant debut album, a worldwide record contract, and a new member in singer/musician Iggy Marino. The band (nicknamed LTB) which also includes guitarist Don Mancuso, keyboardist Eric Bieber, bassist Mike Mullane, and drummer Roy Stein are currently preparing for the release of its new album and some select concert dates.
When the band’s lead vocalist and co-songwriter Phil Naro (March 13th, 1958 – May 3, 2021) sadly passed away after a valiant battle against cancer the group’s future was in doubt. Naro and the other band members had just secured a worldwide record deal with the European-based label, MIG Records, and had put the finishing touches on the album when his illness returned, and tragedy struck.
As his illness progressed the band members assured Naro the record would be released, and they would continue to pursue his artistic vision for the material he felt was his best work as a songwriter and vocalist. Now, with the record deal signed, a release date set and a dynamic new vocalist in place, their promise to their fallen musical comrade can finally be fulfilled.
The debut album features a wide variety of musical styles and textures, all crafted around the powerhouse rhythms of LTB and the remarkable voice of Phil Naro. The album even contained a remake of Black Sheep’s “Chain On Me,” which was written by Mancuso and Lou Gramm, as well as a Mancuso/ Naro original, “A Little Outside,” which features Foreigner’s Lou Gramm on lead vocals and Naro on backing vocals.

At the time of this live recording, February, 2008, Willy DeVille was clean and sober, and had been for a few years, yet he still seems delightfully deranged, screaming and squawking between songs, still emitting a strange voodoo attraction that seems to channel James Brown (minus the overblown theatrics), Dr. John and Tom Waits, despite DeVille unkindly describing Waits thus in 2007: “He’s a friend of mine but I’ve never really listened to him. He always sounds like he’s goofing. You remember Emmett Kelly, the tramp clown who wore the top hat? He kind of reminds me of him in a funny way. He’s the funny drunk at the end of the bar.”
But when Willy sings ‘Try stealing a guitar that’s strung with barbed wire, Ripping them strings like your fingers’ on fire’, on his own ‘Muddy Waters Rose Out Of The Mississippi Mud’ you instinctively feel his connection to the blues, the South, to the old, weird Antebellum America, and even earlier before Manifest Destiny masquerading as Lady Liberty stole the Mexican land and incorporated it into the growing United States. Despite being raised in New York this is his America. It’s all there to hear, too, in ‘Spanish Stroll’, ‘Chieva’, and ‘Demasiado Corazon’. At his heart he’s still the entertainer, the showman, the raconteur, the musician and with exhilarating, thrilling and powerfully individualistic covers of ‘Trouble In Mind’, ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ and ‘Hey Joe!’, it feels like he’s speaking from personal experience each and every time.
Sadly, around a year later in February 2009, Willy was diagnosed with Hepatitis C, and later that year (May) while he was being treated for that illness his doctors discovered he was also suffering from pancreatic cancer. Willy DeVille departed this mortal coil in the later hours of August 6th 2009, a mere three weeks short of what would have been his fifty-ninth birthday.
Willy DeVille was always the rebel, still refusing to conform, still the individual, as this album demonstrates. Enjoy the wonderful legacy he left behind and rejoice in this latest, previously unreleased live collection from February 2008. And despite, unknowingly, perhaps already suffering from the cancer that would eventually claim him, Willy was always a performer able and willing to offer a memorable show.

Commander Cody already gained cult status with his band The Lost Planet Airmen by 1980 when he was invited to play the Rockpalast. His music wandered between the genres blues, country rock, boogie, rockabilly and texmex spiked with his very own wit and humor.
The audience witnessed a colorful, high energy concert evening in the WDR Studio A in Cologne. In his known manner Commander Cody was rocking through the set list, always with a tongue-in-cheek.
That evening he was accompanied by Steve Mackay (saxophone, vocals), Tona Johnson (drums, vocals), Bill Kirchen (guitar, vocals), Doug Killmer (bass, vocals) and Peter Siegel (pedal steel guitar, guitar).
Commander Cody died on September 26th 2021 at the age of 77.

In 1973, Tom Robinson moved from Cambridge to London and joined the acoustic trio Café Society. Their debut album was produced by the Kinks' Dave and Ray Davies and released in 1975 on their own Konk label. Robinson left Cafe Society in 1976, started gigging in London, and founded a new band with his old friend, guitarist Danny Kustow, amidst the London Punk Rock scene - The Tom Robinson Band. They signed to EMI, "2-4-6-8 Motorway" was their first single, released in late 1977, which got into the top 5 of the UK singles charts and stayed there for over a month. In early 1978, the Tom Robinson Band recorded their debut album "Power Of The Darkness", peaking at number 4 in the UK album charts. The title track was released as a single and entered the charts as well. Their song "Glad To Be Gay" was banned by the BBC. The band split in 1980 after the release of their second album "TRB Two".
Tom Robinson, who supported Amnesty International, Rock Against racism and stood up for equal rights for gays, spent a couple of months in Germany and returned to the UK with three future singles: “War Baby”, “Atmospherics” and “Back In The Old Country”. These were eventually released on the album “Hope And Glory” in 1984, and the record company sent him out on tour to promote it. On 9th. November 1984 Tom Robinson & Crew performed at the Zeche in Bochum and the WDR Rockpalast was there.

The musical life of the American jazz saxophonist Gary Bartz is busy and eventful. The eighty-year-old American Bartz jammed with Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, and Pharoah Sanders at a young age. In 1965 he became a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. In 1970 Bartz joined the Miles Davis Band, played with Davis at the Isle Of Wight - Festival, and on his studio/live album "Live Evil". In 1972 Gary Bartz founded his own band, NTU Troop. He borrowed the name from the Bantu language. Bartz: "Ntu means unity in all things, in time and space, life and death, in the visible and invisible. Musically, it stands for an alliance of bop, free, rock and African music."
On 8th November 1975, Gary Bartz performed with the NTU Troop in Bremen's Post-Aula. Radio Bremen recorded the concert and now the recording is being released physically and digitally on Moosicus. Gary Bartz was joined on stage by drummer Howard King, bassist Curtis Robertson, and pianist Charles Mims, an extraordinary, musically brilliant quartet that was well-rehearsed and coordinated. Unfortunately, it was short-lived, because quite soon after this performance, the members of the NTU Troop went their own ways again. King, Robertson, and Mims went on to work with Roberta Flack, Lou Rawls, and Patrice Rushen, among others, while Bartz continued his solo career on such major labels like Capitol Records and Arista. For Gary Bartz, jazz is "improvised composing", which can be heard on this live album recorded 46 years ago.

The longest-tenured Irish punk band is undoubtedly Stiff Little Fingers – who have been bashing and thrashing since 1977. And the triple-disc set, “Live at Rockpalast 1980 & 1989”, shows that the band remained a vital live band (and also, stayed true to their roots) throughout the ‘80s, despite a five-year hiatus smack dab in the middle of the decade.
Singer/guitarist Jake Burns has been the band’s leader since their inception – with bassist Ali McMordie standing right alongside Jake most of the time – which saw Stiff Little Fingers being a part of the first-wave of Euro punk bands, which included the lofty likes of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Damned, the Buzzcocks, the Jam, etc. And in the process, Stiff Little Fingers issued such classic punk LP’s as “Inflammable Material”, “Nobody’s Heroes” and “Go for It” plus the punk anthems “Alternative Ulster", “Suspect Device” and “At the Edge”.
Comprised of a total of three discs, “Live at Rockpalast 1980 & 1989” will certainly satisfy both your audio and visual needs – the first two discs are audio-only, featuring the 1980 and 1989 performances, while the third disc is a DVD of the group’s classic 1980 appearance on Germany’s long-running music show. Jake Burns still remembers: "The place was packed and the audience were with us from the first note. They were wonderful, singing and bouncing along. It really felt like a "home game" to use a football analogy. I thought we played really well too, apart from a slight timing mistake during "Back to Front", a new song we were still learning. (See if you can spot my giving Jim the "look of death" at that point! LOL!)."

They were one of the leading representatives of "Krautrock", this independent rock music, primarily of West German bands, at the end of the '60s, beginning of the '70s. Hoelderlin began their career in 1972 with the release of their album "Hölderlins Traum" on the Pilz label of the journalist and "Krautrock" pioneer Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser. The Wuppertal musicians mixed folk with progressive rock and psychedelic elements and used classical instruments such as viola, cello and flute. The group's initially German lyrics were written mainly by guitarist Christian von Grumbkow and bassist Peter Käseberg, influenced by the works of the poet and namesake Friedrich Hölderlin. This changed, however, when the band signed with Intercord in 1975, their records were henceforth released via the Stuttgart record company's "progressive" label Spiegelei and Conny Plank sat behind the controls at the studio mixing desk. After their sixth studio album, "Fata Morgana", Hoelderlin split up in 1981. It took almost a quarter of a century for the band to reunite and celebrate their comeback in December 2005 with a furious concert at the WDR "Rockpalast" in Bonn's Harmonie. Hoelderlin's Hans Bäär remembers: "While there was still a certain tension on stage during the soundcheck, the audience welcomed us in the evening with the greatest warmth and approval. They had actually come to a Hoelderlin concert again after almost 25 years. Hard to believe!"

Brazilian Latin jazz stars Airto Moreira and his wife, singer Flora Purim, pride themselves with a live album from 1988 and take listeners into their imaginative world of Brazilian/Latin jazz.
Moreira and Purim were both members of the Quartetto Novo in the 1960s, alongside Brazilian jazz legend Hermeto Pascoal; Flora Purim even had her own TV programme in Brazil. In 1967, the Moreira/Purim couple moved from Rio to New York. In the USA she played with Stan Getz and Gil Evans, he took part in some sessions for Miles Davis' album "Bitches Brew" and also played live in the Davis band in 1970 and early 1971, to be heard on the album "Black Beauty: Miles Davis at Fillmore West", among others. Afterwards, Airto Moreira belonged to Weather Report and Chick Corea's Return To Forever. In addition to collaborations with Billy Cobham, John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana, among others, Airto Moreira launched a breathtaking solo career from 1970 onwards, with his wife almost always at his side. She also successfully released solo albums, often accompanied by greats such as George Duke, Stanley Clarke, Ron Carter or McCoy Tyner, and, like her husband, provided the Latin jazz elements on Return To Forever. From 1983 onwards, the Moreira/Purim couple released records together, and both also worked with Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart.
On 26th October 1988, Flora Purim and Airto Moreira performed with their own ensemble at the Jazzfest in Bremen, Germany. Long-term companions such as bassist Bob Harrison, saxophonist and keyboardist Gary Meek and Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Marcos Silva shared the stage with the couple. A truly great "accompanying crew". Flora Purim: "The Bremen Jazz Festival was among the top ten best festivals in Europe and Airto and I were proud to be invited to be part of it".
Conclusion: An intoxicating mixture of Latin, jazz, funk and fusion. Airto Moreira and Flora Purim let the American and the Brazilian flow into each other in a flowing and liberated way.

"It's Christmas Time Again" - despite the Corona pandemic and maybe precisely because of it. Even if it will be a completely different Christmas this year, without the big hullabaloo, without Christmas markets and crowds in the shopping malls and streets of this world. Maybe it will be a Christmas back to the roots, more contemplative, calmer, more meditative than in previous years.
Indie rocker and singer/songwriter Nash Albert took up this issue in his Christmas song "Christmas Time" and visually transformed it into an emotional and very thought-provoking video. It shows how street children in Eastern Europe and an old man discover and celebrate the joy of Christmas together

The two concerts captured on this remarkable CD and DVD set are superb evocations of a band before and after major change.
Dusseldorf sees the most successful, major label Runrig lineup coming to the end of its run, with Donnie Munro making one of his last stands as lead vocalist and frontman, before leaving the band, ambitious to begin a political career as a Member of the UK Parliament. He stood as a Labour Party candidate for his native constituency of Ross, Skye and Inverness West but was defeated on two occasions.
By the time of the Cologne concert, Bruce Guthro had settled into his role as the new frontman of Runrig, made it his own and been warmly accepted by fans. 1997 saw both the ending of the ‘old’ Runrig and their departure from London-based label Chrysalis. But it also saw the 1997 referendum on a devolved parliament for Scotland and a vote for that assembly to be established in Edinburgh. New beginnings were everywhere, and Scotland was ready to embrace Bruce, and the ‘new’ Runrig he fronted. It did.
And so did the rest of Europe. Germany in particular had always welcomed Runrig’s brand of powerhouse Celtic rock with open arms, and the winter tour in 2001, supporting the “Stamping Ground” album which saw Bruce fully integrated into the band, was a triumph.
So, in a different way, was that 1996 outing, also in the depths of winter. The power and sweetness of Donnie’s vocals, and the sense of bearing witness to on-stage relationships forged decades previously in the dancehalls and marquees of the Highlands and Islands, is overwhelming and beguiling. Bringing the two concerts together in one package offers an irresistible opportunity to contrast and compare.
Runrig ended their career in style at the “Last Dance” concerts beneath the battlements of Stirling Castle in 2018. After 45 years, it was all over, at least in terms of live performance. The band have made a massive contribution to Scottish and European culture, and on the way have provided concertgoers with many joyous, moving experiences, two of which are captured here. Dusseldorf in 1996 and Cologne in 2001 saw two Runrigs, both performing brilliantly, and it is both instructive and moving watch these two bands which, are in the end, one. (Tom Morton)

FIVE DECADES OF CLASSIC ROCK – EPITAPH celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2020 and are celebrating it with a new "Best Of" (3-CD box) and a tour. Their studio album „Long Ago Tomorrow“, a very varied and personal musical statement released in 2019, marked the highlight of a long journey through five decades of rock, from the cellars of the Fantasio in Dortmund to the haunted house of the Black Hills and the skyscrapers of Chicago.50 years on, EPITAPH is still a first-rate, classic rock band with an amazing stage presence.
The new 3-CD box „Five Decades of Classic Rock“ represents a cross-section of 50 years of the band’s history and is due for release in Summer 2020.
Only a handful of German rock bands deserve the epithet legendary and EPITAPH is one of the first. They were the first German band to do multiple tours of the USA, and produced their „Outside The Law“ album in Chicago in 1974. They made their name in Germany with TV appearances on Beat Club and Rockpalast.
Touring with Joe Cocker, Rory Gallagher, Golden Earring and ZZ-Top, as well as countless festival appearances, EPITAPH became one of the most popular German rock bands, with a cult following that remains to this day.
Over the past 50 years EPITAPH have released a total of 18 studio and live albums. Including digital re-releases, they now total 23. The band retired from the limelight in the 80s and 90s, but returned in full swing in the new millennium. The 21st century studio albums „Remember The Daze“, „Dancing With Ghosts“, „The Acoustic Sessions“, „Fire From The Soul“ and „Long Ago Tomorrow“ are examples of a timeless rock music that are a delight for both new fans and those still faithful from the old days.
Another delight for fans is the CD/DVD box „Live At Rockpalast“ featuring all three Rockpalast concerts, plus the Beat Club recordings as bonus material. „The Acoustic Sessions“ made Place 31 in Germany’s ECLIPSED magazine’s top 100 rock and pop albums of 2014, ahead of such icons as the Foo Fighters, Joe Bonamassa or the legendary Wishbone Ash. Following its unplugged stage success the band released a live CD/DVD box „A Night At The Old Station“ in 2016.
The current line-up consists of the founding members Cliff Jackson (guitar/vocals) and Bernd Kolbe (bass/vocals), as well as Heinz Glass (guitar), who joined in the 70s. New to the band is drummer Carsten Steinkämper. A native of Dortmund, he studied percussion at the Maastricht Conservatory from 1997 to 2001, before appearing with various formations. Carsten replaces Scottish founding member Jim McGillivray.

Like many performers, he had all his shows very quickly cancelled.
Luckily in his British home town of Bicester (he is also living in Bremen, Germany) he found out about a volunteering operation entitled "Salute The NHS" and went to sign up for 2 months.
This was founded by former McLaren boss Ron Dennis.
The aim was to deliver 1million meals and care packages to our incredible and courageous Covid19 frontline workers across the United Kingdom.
Whilst packing bananas into boxes, Krissy decided to write and record a song about this amazing and unique operation which involved many fabulous people giving up their time and many generous companies supplying goods.
With the help of many great people, here is a music video which captures a very beautiful story of people coming together.
It will hopefully inspire you to become a volunteer one day and try to be the best person you possibly can be.
It is a win win situation.
Very healthy for your own mental wellbeing and even better for the person on the receiving end!
The 1million meal milestone was reached on Monday July 6 and the Salute The NHS volunteering mission has now ended.

Soon after releasing their new album "The New Mine", british folkrock legends Matthews Southern Comfort will come out with a single about the current Corona-pandemic.
Ian Matthews about "Hey Superman":
Sitting in my garden four days ago, I felt that I should be doing something constructive and musical, rather than simply reading book and plinking around on my guitar, waiting for this fucking mess to be over. It set me thinking about this awful situation we’re all in and I began writing ✍️
Not being one for trite, sentimental crap, I wanted to create something that had a strong message and a sense of humor about this damned pandemic. Something I could send to BJ Baartmans, knowing he would recognize it as both a necessary thing and a challenge to his music writing abilities. The entire lyric, including edits and word changes took me about an hour and I felt when I was done, that I’d said something of value. That same day BJ finished the music and sent it back to me for approval. As if he needed it. The man is a songwriting phenomenon. We talked out the style of song we wanted and he went at it. The following day, Tuesday, he sent me back a beautifully crafted acoustic track with his guide vocal. I loved it. I knew I would. It was hard to replace his vocal, but hey, I’m the singer, he’s the guitar player. We sent it on to Eric and Bart, who instantly heard their parts, recorded them at home and flew them back to BJ, pony express, who mixed it. Three days post to post. Now it’s yours.
If the song can make the slightest positive difference to someone’s day, I’m a happy man. Enjoy.
Hey Superman, where are you?
