The series is a monstrous rare showcase in storytelling without dialogue. If you can stomach gore (or if you live for it), the show is a great study in sound design, animated expression, and action. Lackadaisys Messy Lines [Scribble Kibble]

Time to appreciate that Lackadaisy is hand animated and there are no rigs. The style leaves in the sketchy animation lines from the final rough pass of the animation, rather than hiding them. Its gritty look works well for a jazzy gangster cat world set in the 1900's time of USA prohibition (when alcohol was illegal).

Tracy Butler's Lackadaisy comic has unequivocally amazing art, and the production team for the movie did a fantastic job at creating a style worth its salt. We're lucky they went with 2D hand animation instead of trying to perfectly mirror the complex look of the comics via 2D puppets or 3D models.

More and more art sites and programs are implementing automatic permissions that say it's okay for AI to use your creations. For some reason the default is always set to yes, so if you don't want ethical AI databases downloading your work you have to manually go in to your settings to change things.

The unethical AI developers are going to take your stuff anyway. That's what already happened and why so many artists are angry.

Of course there are many normal art tools that use AI or machine learning to function. However, given the current controversy caused by a few big players in the AI industry (thanks for ruining it for everyone super cool thanks thanks), a lot of visual artists no longer trust the intent behind AI data agreements.

ArtStation and DeviantArt: DA fixed its AI tag so that it is automatically set to NO by default. ArtStation has not done this, so by default over there you are "allowing" AI use of your art. (Even though you never agreed to that. It's like they slapped a public domain license on your work for you. Unbelievable, really. I can't understand it.)

Slow Paint (opposite of speedpaint)

Crowne Prince 2022-06-25 | A slowpaint is where the art gets made very, very, very slow. Speedpaints have footage sped up about 60x faster, so, what if instead it was slowed down 60x slower?

The art is a commission of arctic kirin characters Aurelion and Windshear. They were able to find a nirnroot cave during their search for rare herbs.

Komi Cant Communicate [Scribble Kibble]

Crowne Prince 2022-03-04 | An introduction to framing and composition in animation, which Komi Can't Communicate uses in a unique way because its main character never talks.

A lot of this is a mini tutorial on filmography/cinematography camera, shot size, angle, etc. The same principles matter a lot for comics too. I could talk and talk and talk about these things because they ultimately make the difference between a good animation and a GREAT animation.

If I'd realized earlier how cool the text effects in the anime are I'd have focused more on those! Instead this touches briefly on how the art is set up to make things stressful, lonely, anxious, and awkward.

Best Animation Export Settings Tutorial [Scribble Kibble]

This is a lot of technical information that might turn your brain to soup, but I kept it as simple as I could. Animations are no different than PNGs and JPGs. Quality (and all your hard work) gets lost if you aren't saving your video files a certain way. ⭐️ BEST EXPORT SETTINGS ⭐️
The tutorial teaches the principles of exporting animations from any program. The apps I use as examples include Toon Boom Advanced, Adobe Premiere, Adobe Media Encoder, Magix Vegas Pro, and Flipaclip. If you use something else - and you probably do - this tutorial is still useful.

People will argue about ProRes vs Cineform vs DNxHR as an intermediate mezzanine codec. Any of them are good. As an animator I always choose intermediate over lossless - partly because I'm too lazy to install Lagarith Lossless again, and partly because there is no quality difference visible to the human eye between lossless and intermediate. You're only protecting data you can't see. Plus, animators usually don't work with live action footage and have less to worry about as far as transcoding camera recordings.

Though I do use the lossless MOV Animation codec when exporting from Toon Boom Advanced because I always have to do further edits elsewhere, and MOV Animation is the only Toon Boom codec that survives my workflow without ugly interlacing.

Cheap animation programs (like Flipaclip) will only let you export lossy formats. There's nothing you can do about it - but at least now you know why your art may not look as sharp if you edit that clip in another program, or if you send it to someone else for a collab.

The examples of complex animation worth the huge amount of extra time a 2-pass VBR export are Castlevania, Metal Gear Rising, and Zone of the Enders. I personally do not find 2-pass VBR worth the encode time since my animations are simple and destined for YouTube, not Netflix streaming.

I always suggest VBR over CBR for animators, unless the destination platform for your video demands CBR.

Tablet Review I Shouldve Done: Cintiq 24 Pro vs 27QHD

Crowne Prince 2020-09-25 | I quit tablet reviews before covering what I actually use as a full-time artist: a Wacom Cintiq 27QHD Touch for five years and the Cintiq 24 Pro for about a year. I ditched the review format for an honest, slightly humorous talk about Cintiq ownership and screen tablets in general.

That crazy Cintiq Pro fan was enough to make me almost switch back to the 27QHD. The fan fix made a huge difference and I'm happy now.

There are several features of Wacom tablets and how their software works that make it worth the investment for me. If $ is a problem there are other types of Wacom tablets competitively priced; this video is not about how to save you money, it's about some of the best tools on the market. When you're considering a Cintiq you're likely a full time artist. I can say, yes, end of 2020 there is still a definite physical quality and good customer support difference between Wacom versus its rising star competitors.

I paid for the 27QHD with my own blood, sweat, and tears. I marked the video as paid promo because of the 24" Cintiq I received pro bono. I was not asked to make a review; I did so because talking about long-term Cintiq ownership outside of livestreams is something I meant to cover long before companies started asking me to review their products.

I'm glad I quit reviews. Tech reviews were sucking away lots of animating hours.

⭐️ Reasons I Prefer Cintiqs ⭐️
The expresskey remote. On the same remote the same button has a different shortcut if I'm using Toon Boom than when I am using Photoshop. Wacom's custom button programming is unrivaled.

Quality. The quality of materials is better than what cheaper brands use.

Screen Colors. Some other brands I've used had great screen colors as well.

Compatibility. I've never used an art program Wacom didn't understand. Compatibility was an issue for some other brands.

Longevity. I haven't tried using a cheap tablet for any length of time so I can't say from experience how well other brands would hold up. I'd love to hear from any 5-year owners of other brands, good or bad ownership stories!

Customer Support. Personally I've had really great customer support experiences with Wacom. I had little contact with other brands' customer support but their English was overall much weaker.

LOYALTY (MLP Animatic)

We evaluated head, bust, and full body character art, character sheets, landscapes, full illustrations, and traditional art. Traditional art should be broken down into categories but it was a much less popular submission type, as were landscapes - hence why there are two traditional pieces under landscapes. I wanted to include background art because it is often underlooked as a market for independent artists. Most of my viewers only consider character art!

►► Judging Info ◄◄
Every panelist assigned a price range to each of the art pieces using the scale in this video. Except in cases where the artist signed their piece, creator was unknown. Hours of work into each piece was unknown. Panelists voted blind, so they did not know how others on the panel were voting. The panel also provided written tips and critique on a few pieces of their choosing. Some of those comments are featured in the video.

Art is sorted by category according to the median price of the 6 votes. Honestly I was not sure if there would be any agreement at all, but all 6 panelists consistently voted. It was very clear to everyone whether a piece was a low, mid, or high cost. There were a few exceptions, usually with regards to more abstract art.
