note from ricky eat acid: This song p u l l is the first song I've ever written so traditionally as Ricky Eat Acid. It's the first time my own vocals appear on a track, though treated somewhat, with my own melodies and lyrics. It's an odd move this late, since I've been writing songs for years, putting things together since Highschool with only my voice and one or two other instruments or sometimes what feel like hundreds. I've only played with my own voice in my production work a handful of times, however, and never liked the results.
Conversely, this is the least traditional 'song' I've written, if viewed outside of the projects lens. I guess I've always felt comfortable separating songwriter and producer even as the songs I've been writing solo & for bands become more & more abstracted and produced; closer to what I've been doing with samples as REA. I think remaining comfortable creatively can be kind of a death sentence, so I'm really happy to break down that separation, and I couldn't be happier with the result. Who knows what's next - I have no clue. All I want to do is keep making whatever feels right and natural at any time, without giving in to any outside sway or letting my own doubts about authenticity or reception scare me into remaining traditional in any way. note from ryan: i've been a serious fan of REA since the first song i heard from him. he's part of orchid tapes which is a really impressive indie label run by just a couple of passionate people. REA's album Three Love Songs came out through the label, and the LP probably has a million plays on my phone because i listen to it on almost every flight i take. artists i can listen to while traveling are ones i'll support til i die, and REA's diversity is enough to last a lifetime.
