The rhombic dodecahedron at the beginning is very similar to Dimitri Tishchenko's build shown on:

Dimitri wrote that the units in this build are not solid.
As far as I know he was the first to build a rhombic dodecahedron by connecting tetrahedral shapes made with magnets.

Here, a tutorial is shown for size 5, for which a different method is needed.
