VIDEO SYNOPSIS: ----------------------------------------------------------------- Hey!
In this video, Iโm going to teach you two methods for making authentic 8-bit chiptune music, like that produced by the NES, GameBoy, and Commodore 64 sound chip, entirely for free.
Iโm also going to give you some compositional tips to make your 8-bit music even better.
8-bit music has made a significant resurgence in the past decade with many high-profile indie games utilizing it as their main sound palette. Apart from games, thereโs a thriving chiptune community that enjoys making this kind of music just for fun.
So letโs talk about how you can do that, too.
So the first method for making 8-bit music is to use a free VST instrument inside of your digital audio workstation. Iโm using Reaper for my DAW and this NES VST is the best one Iโve found on the web.
Now if youโre wanting to make just general 8-bit chiptune, youโre not looking to emulate a particular console or sound chip, you can just pluck away and use this sound palette however you want.
But, in my experience, itโs more fun to limit yourself to try to actually create something that could have been played on the NES or GameBoy or Commodore 64 or whatever.
In this case, youโll want to do a little bit of research on the sound chip youโre trying to emulate because there are differences.
For example, the NES has five sound channels. Two square wave channels, a triangle wave channel, a noise generator channel, and a DPCM sample channel, which could play very, very low-quality samples, like the iconic bongo sound from Super Mario Bros 3.
The Gameboy had a different setup, as well as the Commodore 64.
Now we donโt have access to the original software composers in the NES era used, but a tracker is about as close as we can get to replicating it.

Matthew has worked on several AAA titles, including Kingdom Craft and Moonlight Blade (the largest MMORPG in China).
Check out this video where he and audio director Richard Ludlow talk about their experience writing for the game.
We talk about his work with Hexany and some of the benefits of full-time employment vs. freelancing, but also talk about some really organic, practical ways to build relationships and ultimately get paying work as a composer.
My favorite quote from our conversation:
"No one [would] hire me, but I never really understood why. Looking back, I realize you need to have the appearance of a professional working composer before anyone will hire you. It needs to be very easy for people to just click play and say 'wow, this sounds awesome.' You need to give off the aura that you're a working, successful composer in order to become a working, successful composer."
Some other great takeaways are:
- His philosophy on gear and favorite sample libraries - Theย wrong way to prospect yourself to clients - His organic approach to building meaningful business relationships ("Cool people attract cool people") - Practical tips for building an online presence that draws people in and helps you land gigs (check out his awesome website!)

We talked about his origin story, the indelible impact of games like Majora's Mask, and how he approaches orchestrating a piano sketch (as well as a great resource for orchestration).
He walked me through his composition process, starting with good ol' music notation (not the piano roll!).
We chatted about his current projects, and how he's fused 8- and 16-bit sounds with the contrapuntal style of J.S. Bach.ย

We run in a lot of the same circles online, and I figured it was high time to have him on the show. Boy, did he bring the value.
I'm obsessed with his metaphor of the composer as a farmer. We plant seeds, we water, we prune, and we wait. That's the only way to success in this saturated, highly-relational business.
We talk through Emmanuel's composing process, his personal experience networking with game developers, and he shares some practical tips for building your career as a video game music composer. That's the biggest takeaway I took from my value-packed interview with Carlos Eiene, aka, insaneintherainmusic.
We chatted about his origins, his influences, his advice for young composers, the STARS system he uses for sight-reading music, his fascination with checklists, and the neuroscience of remembering things.
We walk through his entire process for making videos, from the idea, to the upload, and how he balances the improvisational nature of jazz with shipping consistent content.
What does Carlos think about when he solos? What's his sacred checklist?
He breaks down the power of repeatable processes. Oh, and why he hates the book, "The War of Art."
This multi-instrumental, incredibly talented video game jazz musician has so much value to offer. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I did. :)

This song departs from the Zelda Title Theme formula and surprises more by how understated it is. In this video, I talk about the power of diatonic major 7 chords and their ability to upset the normal tension & release pattern of tonal music.
Iโve also composed a piece in the style of the Title Theme. I'm constraining myself to a few criteria so that I write a song in the style of the Super Mario World Overworld theme. I move from MuseScore over to Logic Pro X to begin arranging the parts and adding SNES sound effects!
I use the great plugin by Impact Soundworks, Super Audio Cart for this.
