Union Pacific historic equipment move Cheyenne to Kimball, Neb. 2022 Traveling Tom 2022-11-12 | It's a once in a lifetime move as Union Pacific transfers much of it's historic railroad equipment from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Silvis, Illinois. Many of these locomotives have not moved in more than 40 years. The move was part of one of the biggest donations in railroad preservation history. Locomotives include...Challenger #3985, one of the Worlds largest steam locomotives.DD40AX, Centennial #6936, Worlds largest diesel locomotive.TTT-6, #5511, a 1923, 2-10-2, Santa Fe type steam locomotive.Ex Amtrak #966B, E9B.Chicago, Norther western, F unit.All locomotives and cars will be heading to the massive shop in Silvis, Illinois, owned by Railroading Heritage of Midwest America where most will be overhauled and returned to operating condition. Long Union Pacific loaded oil train coming down steep grade the Moffat Route Traveling Tom 2022-07-26 | A loaded and very long Union Pacific oil train comes down the Moffat Route. The short (few hundred feet) 3% grade shown in the beginning of the video is the steepest part of the Moffat Route in Colorado. Oil trains were a rarity on this route but have made a big comeback recently on both the Union Pacific and BNSF. These are now daily trains. Union Pacific freight trains which were sporadic last year, are also increasing.

Rare all three Air Force bombers flying together B-52, B-2, B-1 Lancer 2022 Traveling Tom 2022-07-20 | In a very rare display of power, we see all three USAF bombers in flight together. This was a very special occasion at the Ellsworth Air Force base in Rapid City, South Dakota which has not held a air show in over 7 years. 2022 was the 80th anniversary of the base, the 75 birthday of the Air force, the 80th anniversary of the Doolittle Raid, and the 35th anniversary of the B-1 operations at Ellsworth, AFB. It is had to believe that the B-1 is 47 years old and the B-52 is 70! Later we see the F-22 Raptor. Filmed May 14th, 2022.
Virginia and Truckee steam train Gold Hill to Virginia City, Nevada Traveling Tom 2022-07-13 | The Virginia and Truckee is one of America's oldest railroads. Originally built to serve the mining industry. Tracks were laid in 1869 and follow a 14 mile stretch of the original line from Virginia City to Gold Hill, Nevada. The locomotive puts on a good show as it climbs the 3% grade towards Virginia City. Most of this area looks very much like it did a hundred years ago. Ride a train in a salt mine 650 below ground at Strataca, Kansas Traveling Tom 2022-04-02 | Kansas is know for it's salt mines which are rarely open to the public. Strataca is the exception. 650 feet below ground is a maze of tunnels, going in every direction in this still active salt mine. A small railroad (which is one of the deepest railroads open to the public) takes you through some of the tunnels around the complex. There is also a longer tour on a electric bus tram.What we see if just a sample of the 150 miles of tunnels in this complex. Salt is still being mined mostly for ice melt. The caverns are considered one of the best places for storage of high value items such as film, costumes, and art due to the dry climate. These massive towers once held coal for the steam locomotives back when steam ruled the rails. With a build date of 1941 this was likely one of the last coaling towers built. Here is a nice video of a long CSX freight train, with a one of a kind paint job on the lead locomotive leaving Indianapolis. The ancient railroad crossing lights date back to likely the 1930's. If you look closely the original marbled sign for the tracks are still there but covered up with a reflective sign.

Union Pacific 9 locomotive monster train Byers Canyon, and Bond, Colorado Traveling Tom 2021-09-25 | The freight trains keep getting longer and longer. Caught this monster train passing through Byers Canyon. This is with out question the longest train I have ever seen pass through the Moffat Route. Train was so long it busted in half earlier in the day (probably because there was no pusher locomotives). Eight powered locomotives is the maximum allowed for normal operations (dead locomotives do not count). You can also add pusher locomotives in the rear for some steep uphill grades. Lots of ancient coal cars on this train. These cars along with the GP15 locomotive could be heading to the scrap yard.

The steep grade seen in the first video is the steepest part of the entire Moffat route. Later we see the train near tunnel 29 and passing through Rollinsville, Colorado. Freight traffic has increased many times over on this line due to a huge increase in Intermodal traffic which is clogging up main lines system wide. Many freight trains are now using the Moffat sub as a alternative route.

With intermodal freight trains swamping the main lines in Wyoming. Union Pacific is moving more freight trains over the Moffat. Tank cars will be heading to Utah to move crude oil. Tanks trains have been dominating the Moffat Route lately on both the BNSF and UP railroads and will only increase.

BNSF freight train climbs the steep grade of the Moffat Route Traveling Tom 2021-09-01 | After years of declining rail traffic, the Moffat Route has seen a big increase in train activity recently. Driven largely by the oil fields in Utah. Crude oil trains are now a daily site on the Moffat Route going to and coming from Utah. Fracking sand, steel pipe, lumber, machinery, and other products are also making their way to Utah as a new 80 plus mile railroad is in the works. This new railroad will bring a estimated 5-10 daily trains to the Moffat Route. The location in the video is the steepest part of the Moffat Route with a grade nearing 3%. Union Pacific Big Boy Cheyenne to Sidney, Nebraska August, 2021 Traveling Tom 2021-08-08 | After such a long wait it was a very welcome site to see the Union Pacific, Big Boy, #4014, coming out of the Cheyenne yard and hitting the high iron. This was the first day of a long state to state tour over the USA. The route from Cheyenne, Wyoming to Sidney, Nebraska is one of the most boring routes in America. It is pretty much totally flat, towns are few and far between, and scenery is nothing but weeds. The sky was also filled with smoke from the California fires giving a yellow glow.The short train carries two water tenders, tool car, generator car, crew car, and several empty hoppers for additional braking. With the flat land and light weight train, this hardly gives the Big Boy any work. Notice how the Big Boy finally received some shiny new piston head and valve head covers. Incredible journey on the Rocky Mountaineer first passenger train to Moab, Utah Traveling Tom 2021-08-02 | Please note this was a special train and the train is currently not traveling all the way to the Potash mine as seen in the video. Plans are for the train to stop at Seven Mile Siding. Discussions are ongoing about taking the train to the locations as seen in the video. I am happy to show you some incredible footage of the first ever passenger train to Moab, Utah. This has taken a lot of planning and hard work but now is a reality! Out of all the trains I have rode over the years, this is with out a doubt the most breathtaking I have ever seen. This portion is only part of a much larger train ride that travels from Denver to Moab (will have future videos of other portions of the route).The area in and around Moab, Utah is unlike anything on earth. With many locations looking like the surface of Mars, it is truly breath taking. Although I have previous visited Moab in a car, riding a train right next to sheer cliffs was really amazing. I was especially happy to have taken a ride through the 7050' foot long, Bootlegger Tunnel (video of the inside of this tunnel is likely a first).This is a brand new route starting August 15th, 2021. BNSF coal train North Sedalia, Colorado and channel update Traveling Tom 2021-06-29 | Hello friends. As you have probably noticed there has not been much activity lately on this channel. I am happy to announce that I am working for the railroad again as a mechanic! I am not going to discuss the name of the railroad at the moment since I am still in training, testing, and many things have yet to be finalized. But I can tell you I will be running on the Moffat Route sub, through the great state of Colorado with modern locomotives. I have already completed a thorough Positive Train Control course which was very interesting.Unfortunately during this time I can not get out to enjoy photographing and filming railroads. So there will be less videos than normal. This was not bad timing as hotels are extremely expensive, in short supply, and fuel is at record highs. Because of those reasons I probably would have stayed home this Summer anyways. On the bright side I do have access to Class one yards, locomotives as well as rare mileage. If I can get the permission from all involved, I would like to do another in depth locomotive video with newer locomotives (which are quite impressive). This would likely be months away. I will continue to post videos on this channel but not as frequent. Thank you for your understanding.

BNSF coal train downtown Colorado Springs, Colorado Traveling Tom 2021-06-05 | Downtown Colorado Springs is a great place for train watching. The power plant seen towards the end of the video is where many Union Pacific coal trains unload coal to be burned in the power plant. This power plant and another one further South will switch from coal to natural gas in the near future. After the conversions the Joint line will see another big drop in coal train traffic.
