I was asked to write a song from the perspective of Sheriff Donald McRae to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of a massacre. What I found in my research was a tragic example of systemic racism. in 1916 in a little town called Everett Washington working conditions in the mills were terrible and very dangerous.
The IWW (or Wobblies) came to help people organize to fight for better conditions. They were the first union to represent women and minorities. The owners of the mills threw their support behind a local man for Sheriff. A fear of foreigners and people of color was rampant. His attempts to breakup the movement toward unionizing escalated events culminating in a confrontation at the docks with some 300 heavily armed and untrained civilians. Shots rang out and at least 12 people died.
